This is the first wikipedia editathon in Hokkaido University in Sapporo. It will focus on recruiting new editors, adding and improving articles about historical buildings in Hokkaido University.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We librarians of the Hokkaido University are planning a one-day editathon focused adding and improving articles about historical buildings in our University.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We have plans to issue a press release to the local media, put an ad at local information station, which can be seen at the link here.  In addition, we recruit new editors via our Facebook page, official website and posters in our library.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

On our team we have two experienced editors to lead our editathon and to support participants. One is “Ks aka 98” who is the Japanese Wikipedia administrator. The other one is also familiar with Wikipedia and Hokkaido University.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We will host the event in the room with a sufficient number of computers so that people do not have to bring their own laptops. We are going to conduct a tour of the campus, lecture about how to edit articles by experienced editors. Librarians will help collect books and materials that can be used as references.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

  1. We learn about management problems in the editathon or important policy of Wikipedia in the teacher training by ks aka 98 before or after Oct. 1st. so that we can hold more events like this with only local members. Ks aka 98 has worked as a teacher at "The Facilitators training course for Wikipedia town" in Yokohama, Japan on Mar. 29, 2015.
  2. We will monitor the works done by participants after our editathon and continue to encourage them to edit contents by email or Facebook group. Two experienced volunteers agreed that they answer the questions from us via email or Facebook.
  3. We consider to host some online editathons by using Skype or real-time chats.
  4. We librarians and the local people who interested in editing the Wikipedia will continue and develop this event in subsequent years without the experienced editors or administrators if we get the know-how by this editathon and the teacher training as above.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We would hold the Wikipedia editathon for the first time in Sapporo which is the 4th largest city in Japan by population. In order to increase people’s interest in open data, we think there is a significance in this attempt. Students also would be able to acquire more knowledge of copyright issues, citation and reference.

  4. Number of of articles created or improved: at least 4 (including translation from Japanese to Chinese by students from overseas)

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We librarians will organize this project. We will recruit new editors widely from students, faculty members and local community people. A volunteer tour guide group in our university will also help us.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

We need experienced Wikipedians who can attend and support this editathon, but there is no experienced editors in our city. We want travel expenses to invite 2 supportive Wikipedians, ks aka 98 and Kazuhiro Okada.　Two experienced Wikipedians would help to resolve some problems caused because of being the first event and remove new editor's fear or hesitation when they edit the contents of Wikipedia. If we get the know-how by this editathon, we can continue and develop this event independently in subsequent years.
