Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors
  2. Increase skills for existing editors
  3. Add or improve content

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

1. Bislama Wikipedia training in Vanautu A series of trainings at the Wan Smolbag computer centre in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.
2. Promoting the training Trainings will be promoted as part of the Wan Smolbag computer centre schedule, as well as on the Wan Smolbag Facebook page where local people will see it.
3. Timing Initial training in October will be facilitated by Flinda with the help of Alixos. This series will be "train the trainers" sessions focused on building the capacity of people who have already participated in introductory Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons workshops at Wan Smolbag computer centre.
4. Resources The Wan Smolbag computer centre is equipped with several computers, however the internet is slow and some of the peripherals are in disrepair.
5. Sustainability After the initial series of trainings regular workshops on editing Wikipedia and adding to Wikimedia Commons can become part of the computer centre's regular program.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 4 (2 train the trainer sessions, 2 beginner sessions in which the new trainers share their skills)
  2. Number of participants 12 (2 trainers, 10 learners)
  3. Number of new editors 10
  4. Number of of articles created or improved 20
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) 12
  6. Number of Wikimedia Foundation projects added to: 3 (Bislama Wikipedia, English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons)

Resources[edit]

Wan Smolbag provides in-kind resources through the computer centre and through staff time. Wan Smolbag receives core funding from Australian Aid, NZ Aid and Oxfam.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • This will be the first Wikimedia Foundation-supported activity in Vanuatu (to my knowledge). I've been helping Flinda with some pilot workshops with this in mind in past months. Edits done at the Wan Smolbag computer centre resulting from these pilot workshops can be seen here:

https://bi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/103.20.233.16 given low literacy levels in Vanuatu, I think Wikimedia Commons workshops will have the most impact for Wikimedia more broadly. For example the Wikimedia Commons pilot workshop we did, which included a trip to the market with a borrowed camera, resulting in completely novel additions such as about this Pacific nut: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Namembe.jpg We have also been developing categories on Bislama Wikipedia to document knowledge unique to Vanuatu, such as trees, nuts and foods (Kakae is the Bislama word for food): https://bi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Kakae

The open access model of Wan Smolbag as an organization to host the workshops is aligned with Wikimedia Foundation values. Alixos (talk) 02:24, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

Participants[edit]

  • Volunteer I'll help Flinda run the trainings. I've helped facilitate train-the-trainer Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons workshops in the Asia Pacific region before. Alixos (talk) 02:22, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
