Welcome to this project's final report! This report shares the outcomes, impact and learnings from the grantee's project.

Part 1: The Project[edit]

Summary[edit]

Goge Africa is one of the largest cultural oriented non-governmental organization in Nigeria. Our team met with the founder and CEO of Goge Africa during the Wiki Love Africa Contest in 2016. We had an image uploading session in their office and they are excited about Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. At the end of the program, they agreed to freely release thousands of images to Wikimedia Commons. The need for this project was prompted from the fact many African cultural related articles on Wikipedia didn't have good pictorial representation .

Project Goals[edit]

The goal of this project is to work with Goge Africa to get thousands of cultural images uploaded to Wikimedia Common for usage on Wikipedia and for other educational purpose. Goge Africa is one of the largest cultural oriented and non-governmental organization in Nigeria. Having realized the public needs for wide access to images of historical importance,the management of Goge Africa asked us to organize Wikipedian in Residence in their organization for a period of 6 months so as to get their contents uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Goge Africa will provide office space, desc and internet access. One or more of their staff will collaborate with WiR and provide Wikipedian in Residence with all materials required.

  • at least 2500 uploaded files after 6 months
  • at least 200 improved and/or new articles after 6 months, made by Goge Africa staff and other Wikipedians
  • at least 12% of uploaded files used in new or existing articles

Methods and activities[edit]

We have decided to exclude days which accounted for idle time in the project, however we focused on days where activities took place.


  • Pre-Project Meeting: The purpose of this meeting is to dialogue on the key objectives of the project which is to ensure media files about African related festivals, cultures, dances etc are available for use on Wikipedia and are made available to the public. This first meeting was scheduled between our team and the directors/owner of the partner.
  • Continuation of the Pre-Project meeting: This is the 2nd meeting, it was held between the staff of the partner and our team. The meeting highlighted the benefit of the project to organization, the participating staff and the entire continent. It focused on the strategy to be adopted for the project. The following strategies were adoopted:
  1. Client gave us access to their collections: Our team and their worked on selecting project focused contents eg. festivals, dances, Traditional fashions and wares, Shrines, etc.
  2. All the identified contents above will be categorised based on agreed categories
  3. Receiving partner's consent on staff that will be available for the project
  4. Oraganise an hands-on training on file upload on Wikimedia commons base on the above consent
  5. Distribution of files to the staff for upload with the guideance of our volunteers.
  6. Monthly review of project update.
  • We visited the partner to discuss the step by step planning of the project: The following plan were agreed for the project
  • We will have access to the database of our partner, this will help us to identify relevant content suitable for the project
  • Collation of identifiable relevant content by our team
  • Training of selected member of staff of our partner for the project.
  • Visiting of Network partners that will participate in the project. The project plan to involve some member of our Wiki Fan Clubs for this project as visiting Wikipedians

Monthly review of the progress of the project: We plan to meet with our partner on monthly basis to review the progress on monthly basis in order to determine the progress of the project. Press Conference: The project plan to organize press conference involving selected media houses to report the project to Nigeria populace.

  • All the above processes and procedure were jointly agreed by the two parties.
  • Training session for staff members of our partner: One Staff member was designated for this project and she was the only person that was trained for the project. The training focus on:
  1. Introduction to Wikipedia
  2. How to us photo on Wikipedia article
  3. Introduction to Creative common Licenses
  4. How to upload photos in Wikimedia Commons

  • Arrangement for staff training was concluded in February 2018.

  • Over 100 images have been uploaded. We plan to massively upload images in February ( most of these images have been deleted but letter of permission has been sent to OTRS but no reply has been heard from them)
  • We contacted other content partners to join us during edit-a-thon.
  • Working with other Wikimedians in writing contests for the use of the uploaded images
  • Collation and identification of related African cultural image uploaded to Commons and train our partner on how to contribute to Wikimedia projects.

NB: Idle time in this case means days when our WIR visited the partner without activities because there were not availble.

Learning[edit]

The best thing about trying something new is that you learn from it. What worked well[edit]

What did you try that was successful and you'd recommend others do? To help spread successful strategies so that they can be of use to others in the movement, rather than writing lots of text here, we'd like you to share your finding in the form of a link to a learning pattern.

  • Though the project failed because we didn't achieve our intended plans. However, our initial plan to train staff members of the organization and upload of contents by the staff members and our team could have achieved a major success but the program officer for the project advised that we allow the staff members to upload the photos themselves. This resulted in a set back as staff members were not readily available to do it. It just appears that they were not ready to spend their staff time on the project. Although, we uploaded 100 images before we were advised to allow them do it themselves.
  • The project started with identification of contents that fell withing the scope of the project. i.e African cultural related images.

  • February, we will focus on the use of images uploaded on English, Yoruba, and Hausa Wikipedia articles
  • March, Invitations of non-Wiki based organization to learn and evaluste the project this would be published on major newspapers in Nigeria

With the adoption of the use of images from your website, we observed that images on your website cannot be downloaded for your use. (See an example here)

The adopted approaches were failure[edit]

  • The project focused on training and the use of staff of Goge Africa for uploading session of the identified contents.
  • Initially, uploading of images were done by our team as " images from 3rd parties " which were subsequently deleted by OTRS team for lack of permission from the original owner.

  • The need to obtain in written form a letter of commitment to be signed by each partner- This could be inform of a Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Ensure contents are uploaded by original owner- by our partner as a panacea to avoid OTRS complications.

Yes, there are opportunity for future growth of the project.

  • We believe that the organization are committed to the release of some of their collection for educational purpose. But due to the perceived staff inadequacy on the part of the client they couldn't designate any of their available staff for the project.
  • The organization has quite a huge sum of collection of African related images

Remaining funds[edit]

The funds remaining from this grant in the amount of US$60 were deducted from another grant payment for Grants:Project/Rapid/Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation/Wiki Loves Africa 2020.

Is your project completed?

  • The project didn't complete because the sfaff trained for the project was not chanced to work on the project. This was due to the fact that our partner were faced with a major staff turnover and therefore couldnt designate any staff to work on the project.

The project meant so much to me and our other community members becasue we felt the project could have been a key channel to donate freely use African culturally rich photos to Wikimedia commons for you use on Wikipedia.
