This document presents the application for the 2021-2022 grant for the operation of Wikimedia México, which gives continuity to the 2020 - 2022 grant, which received an extension on June 1, 2020 for USD 108,838.

Broadly speaking, as we are not sure if we will be able to reactivate face-to-face meetings, we have thus considerably lowered the number of these, leaving the minimum for the first half of 2022. We contemplate the publication of a book that collects testimonies with the experiences of the Wikimedian region in Latin America in the first 20 years of Wikipedia in Spanish. We will continue the creation of free video courses for teachers in our Education Program. We will develop graphic and printed materials on gender issues that take up our research: We write Wikipedia: women's participation in the free and collaborative encyclopedia on the Internet, as a basic material for these events with women. We will create training spaces for our community and the public on sensitive issues in our society. And finally, we have made changes to our staff.

What did we learn?[edit]

All the chapters entered into an accelerated dynamic to try to adapt their activities to the current and usual rhythm, to try to meet metrics, not cancel activities, seek for more alliances with institutions and, in our case, the virtual sessions helped a lot, but to the detriment of the real contact, so essential for Wikimedia Mexico.

We continue working to reduce the gender gap, in addition to the editatonas in November we summoned women specialists to carry out a campaign that was replicated in the media, with interviews, and in March we managed to do an editatona every Saturday with a large participation of women.

Another lesson is that the institutions which we collaborate with, or wish to collaborate, have gone through the same problems, which is why they have had to carry out other types of strategies. In another topic, our digitization program was interrupted by the pandemic, which is why we want to continue projecting it for the following year.

How to innovate?[edit]

We consider that the best bet is to understand that we are going through something that we never imagined, that it is time not to worry if an event is canceled or if a workshop participant becomes ill and cannot participate, so we have decided to apply for a flexible grant, where we can reallocate certain visibly unusable resources to new items, which can serve as a forecast for other activities. For example, educational materials, online courses, etc.

New metrics?[edit]

We must be clear that the most important thing is that the team and the community are safe & sound, understand that in this new work-academic dynamic a lot of time is spent online and it is not the time to demand the same results, so we have adjusted our metrics.

With that said, here we include:

  • Introduction
  • Annual plan
  • Program Goals
  • Staff Plan
  • Budget
  • Strategic plan
  • Alignment with Strategy 2030
  • Risk analysis

Wikimedia Mexico reached its first decade of existence, with one of the most solid communities this chapter has contributed to the dissemination of Wikimedia projects in an intense way and has forged a good presence with Mexican society, as well as with various public institutions and private. Historically, it has worked to advocate the premise of encouraging and valuing access to free knowledge, it has also been decisive for reducing the gender gap through the Editatona project, creating and improving content on women, made by women, a model that has been already replicated in various parts of the world; as well as the conformation of events. Another angle has been the defense of net neutrality, together with other institutions that share the same value for free knowledge, we wpould like to add the intense participation of educational and cultural institutions that have approached our association, for mutual interests, educational, cultural and those derived from the pandemic.

The adaptation that we had due to the health emergency led us to limit face-to-face events, but we are ready to resume these activities as soon as it is lifted, therefore we propose to hold some meetings, which we consider will be the first semester of 2022. While that happens we will continue with edit-a-thons, editatonas, online conversations, but we hope to be able to resume the Education Meeting, Open GLAM and a feminist meeting in person. As long as this is not possible, we will keep them online.

Work Priorities[edit]

Wikimedia Mexico is made up of a very close community where presence is essential for our dynamics. That is why we have planned that as soon as the restriction on the pandemic crisis is lifted, we will resume our monthly #JuevesWiki (#WikiThursdays) meetings, the board of directors meetings, and the annual community meeting. This year, at a request from the community, we will offer training on strategic and current issues such as ‘dismantling the premises of patriarchy’, ‘feminist genealogies’, human rights, inclusion and gender awareness, among other topics; that comply with the inclusiveness section of the 2030 Strategy.

Gender Gap[edit]

For this central program of Wikimedia Mexico, in addition to continuing the generation of editatonas throughout the country, we are forming links with women who work for women's rights in Central America, with which we are going to expand editatonas in those regions that do not have affiliates.

For this year we will prepare printed materials, such as a triptych that explains what an editatona is and how to carry out, which includes fragments of the research We Write Wikipedia: participation of women in the free and collaborative encyclopedia on the Internet, as well as postcards of “Never more Wikipedia without us ”with biographies of feminist women on Wikipedia, and a feminist agenda, with biographies and key dates of the feminist schedule.

It is worth mentioning that an educational project to strengthen and lead Wikipedian women will be developed based on the research, in order to promote their participation in the creation of content.

At the same time, we will hold a Feminist Meeting: Women and the Internet, which consists of conferences, talks, workshops and videos, and which will have an approach with a gender perspective and women's human rights.

Content Creation[edit]

Cultural Program

This year we want to expand the work with cultural and artistic institutions of all kinds, through editing marathons, courses, guided visits, conferences and dynamics that give greater dissemination to the Mexican artistic heritage and, in turn, increase free knowledge in the various Wikimedia tools.

Meetings and contests

We continue with the tradition of the Wiki Loves México contest, now with some institutions added to the awards of this initiative that, above all, support the use of Wikimedia Commons. Also, we will hold the Open GLAM Meeting with the aim that new cultural institutions can contribute with databases, collections, free licenses.

Projects to develop

  • To publish a book with the testimonies of the Latin American chapters in the 20 years of Wikipedia in Spanish.
  • To continue building a network with cultural alliances.
  • To follow up on the uploading of databases of various cultural institutions with the Ministry of Culture.
  • To follow up on the digitization project.

In the work and commitment that we have with education in our country and the region, we have seen that there is increasing interest from institutions, teachers and academics to approach the programs and activities that Wikimedia Mexico coordinates in the country.

In response to the interests of the educational communities, ways have been sought to channel with our Education Officer, through this process a two-way communication is established that allows to be aware of interests and ideas of possible projects, conferences, workshops, discussions, edit-a-thons and others events that seek to incorporate Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, as well as other collaborative technology tools in everyday life inside and outside the classroom.

This methodology has allowed the program to set new objectives and goals with and for the community.

Another of the main activities within the Education Program is the generation of didactic materials that allow the daily incorporation of Wikimedia projects in the classroom. These materials will serve as the basis for developing projects in different contexts and in various economic, social and technical conditions.

Currently, in collaboration with the Coordination of Open University, Educational Innovation and Distance Education (CUAIEED, in spanish) we have a current "Edit Wikipedia" course for teachers at UNAM. It is a great step, since it allows us to expand our educational offer with more institutions within the country. Under this premise, we want to expand the offer of free online courses available to teachers at UNAM, produced by Wikimedia Mexico.

This area faces possible changes, visible in the Risk Assessments field.

Work Stages[edit]

In the second half of 2021, we will place special emphasis on following up on the plans that have been consolidating since the beginning of the year, as well as implementing everything that was pending due to the pandemic. During the first semester of 2022, the edition meetings, the community meetings, and the feminist meeting will be resumed. We will seek to expand the offer of virtual courses of Wikimedia Mexico at UNAM and our page.

Program Goals[edit]

Community Support

The community is the most important thing in Wikimedia Mexico, it is due to it that we have managed to be a solid chapter with a lot of work. For this reason, in events and daily communication, they are given precise attention.

With everything that happened in the world, and with the cancellation of all our face-to-face events, we can only hope that we can meet again. We retain, but we drastically decrease, in this grant the monthly meetings, the board meetings and the annual meeting, we trust that by the first semester of 2022 we will be able to get back together and organize events, workshops and editing marathons, but we will always be attentive and We will follow the health indications.

Community skills development

We want the community to obtain better preparation, therefore by internal request we will offer training on sensitive and current issues such as demarcation of patriarchy, human rights, inclusion and gender sensitization.

  • 1 bimonthly course on sensitive issues in society and / or the community.

20 years of Wikipedia in Spanish, the Latin American book

We want to retrieve and compile testimonies from different chapters and user groups in the Latin American region of Wikipedians and Wikimedians, to learn about their experiences, anecdotes, problems and challenges.

  • 100 copies of this publication.
  • Presentation of the publication at a dedicated event.

Gender Gap

This is the most emblematic event of the chapter, for that reason all of March, and some dates in November, is dedicated to organizing at least one editatona a week, and throughout the year several editatonas are held. Just as alliances with various institutions inside and outside of Mexico have been expanded, our goal is to continue with that growth.

  • 5 editatonas a year.
  • 50 attendees a year.
  • 40 new items.
  • 40 new Wikidata items.

Feminist event: Women and the Internet

It is an event planned for March 2022 that combines lectures, talks, videos and workshops. It is a feminist meeting of communication, education, Wikipedia and the Internet, all from a gender and human rights perspective.

  • 4 Featured panellists.
  • 2 days of activities.
  • 40 attendees to the event.
  • 4 Videos on YouTube.

Content Creation

The editing marathons organized by Wikimedia Mexico are already known in Mexican society, content creation is one of our core activities, and each time we approach or seek new allies, so the possibilities increase. We trust that in the first semester of 2022 face-to-face meetings can be organized in different parts of the country, with their respective parallel activities such as talks, special tours, previous courses, according to the characteristics of the institution with which the event is organized.

  • At least 1 edit-a-thon per month.
  • 40 attendees per year.
  • 40 new items per year.
  • 40 Wikidata items per year.
  • 3000 photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

National Photography Contest

It will be our fourth Wiki Loves Mexico photography contest, which will seek to promote and spread Mexican culture and free knowledge.

  • 1000 Photographs

Interaction with cultural and artistic institutions is essential for the performance of Wikimedia Mexico, and given the cancellation of the Open GLAM meeting during the pandemic, our intention is to recover the meeting with these cultural agents.

  • 40 attendees to the event.
  • 2 days of the event.
  • At least 2 new alliances for the chapter.

The Wikimedia Mexico Education Program has responded to the context in which we live, it has become a solid project that has responded promptly to the requirements of the chapter. In 2020 alone, 9 educational alliances were established and a course was placed to incorporate Wikipedia into the classroom aimed at teachers at UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico). This year we want to expand these alliances, consolidate the ones we already have, as well as expand the offer of courses and workshops.

Likewise, the program seeks a projection with the community in the region to strengthen ties and commitment with the chapters.

  • To reach at least 40 participants, 30% women.
  • To reach at least 40 new articles and items on Wikidata.
  • To get at least 4 new educational alliances.

Education Meeting

Given that there is interest by teachers, librarians and institutions in incorporating the use of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia tools in the classroom, a meeting on education issues is necessary for the possibilities, needs, dynamics and benefits to be discussed and explored.

  • Reach 30 attendees to the event.
  • Attract 4 new teachers to the program.

The staff has been helpful in following up on the planning, execution and expansion of WMMX events, functions and alliances in all of its programs. In addition to the staff that had already been hired, we have decided to replace the data consultant with a person in charge of community support, so that more attention and follow-up are given to the needs and management of said area. We will make some changes to the staff, which are explained in more detail in the Staffing Plan.

Civil Protection Course

The Wikimedia Mexico office is located in Mexico City, and since it is a seismic zone, it is necessary to have directions, signage, evacuation routes and meeting points to keep personnel safe. Likewise, training is required by the Civil Protection Secretariat to know the protocols in the event of a telluric event.

Dedicated Server Hosting

Since we are hosting free teacher courses on our page, as well as revitalizing our page with more articles, we need to keep the dedicated server hosting robust in order to expand that online course offering.

Budget Plan[edit]

Staffing Plan[edit]

Strategic Plan[edit]

Alignment with the 2030 strategy[edit]

  • We will observe compliance with the Universal Code of Conduct.
  • We will invest time and resources within our activities in training, talks and workshops on sensitive topics directed to our community, and to the people in general.
  • We will allow democratic decision-making among the various people affiliated with Wikimedia México and the groups to which it is affiliated, regionally and globally.
  • Our position is one of integration and respect for diversity, so we will monitor the recommendation to ensure safety and inclusion to all types of collaborators, communities and people who come close to our movement in México and affiliated groups.
  • Through our events, courses and programs, we will ensure a good experience for users, both new and experienced.
  • We will continue the multi-angle experience with participation in coordinated actions between various chapters at the regional or global level, as the case may be.
  • We will increase our capacity for self-criticism in order to evaluate ourselves.
  • We will reinforce and replicate good experiences, we will avoid those that have not yielded satisfactory results.

Risk Assesment[edit]

Since it is not possible to determine whether the pandemic situation will end during the execution of this Grant, we have to think prospectively:

In Education: It is possible that students and teachers return to the classroom in stages, it will be necessary to rethink or maintain the current virtual structure. Let's not forget that fewer and fewer people are interested in a virtual meeting. So this panorama is doubtful in the sense whether there will be mobility or not. We will have to calculate. Another risk in this program is that the institutions prioritize other objectives and not that of allying with Wikimedia, so it will be necessary to think of a Plan B to stimulate this presence.

In Content Creation: It is similar to Education, the organizations we collaborate with can begin to prepare to open doors and thereby prioritize other functions or objectives. It will be necessary to contemplate the possibility of holding particular events, typical of Wikimedia México or jointly, and, at the same time, which kind of institutions.

In resource management: There is an escalation in the price of the Basic Basket, which presents the challenge of projecting an increase in expenses for our operation, so a reserve of resources will have to be established, in case the prices in the Mexican context rise. Therefore, we propose the possibility of keeping in reserve those resources of the Grant 2020-2021 that have not been exercised, or create a new fund.

Program Story[edit]
