Application[edit]

Background[edit]

Annual Plan[edit]

In the upcoming year, we plan to continue promoting our Thailand Wikimedia Chapter to increase amount of reach. Firstly, we have made collaborations with strategic partners such UNESCO, GLAM and government agencies. Secondly, we plan to organize programs similar to last year such as photo competitions and annual meeting to gain more participants and contributions. We expect that more activities which could not be conducted in 2020 because of the pandemic will be hosted in 2022. Lastly, we plan to fulfill all the requirements necessary to become a legal entity according to Thai law.

Budget Plan[edit]

Staffing Plan[edit]

We currently have a Wikipedian-in-Residence (WIR) working in collaboration with UNESCO Bangkok. However, the position was funded by our previous grant request. In addition to the WIR, we plan to hire an administration staff. The objective is to increase the efficiency of the current administrative work and also to response queries on social media channels in a timely manner. This person is also expected to serve as competition and campaign manager. Due to the growing of the community, these demanding tasks are difficult to manage in a volunteer capacity.

Strategic plan[edit]

The strategic planning was last discussed over a year ago. Detailed information can be found on this page. Next year as well as the years to come, we look forward to implementing these recommendations and create a multi-year strategic planning to align with the Movement Strategy.

Introduction[edit]

Wikimedia Thailand was approved as a Wikimedia Chapter in mid 2019. Our main objectives are to increase amount of reach, new participants, and increase content of Wikimedia projects both quantitatively and qualitatively. In 2021-2022, we have started renting an office for the Wikimedia Thailand Chapter. We will continue to promote and encourage more participations and contributions by establishing more collaborations with other institutes and holding the photo competition. Most of the activities, especially those related to Wikimania 2020, did not take place because of the pandemic. We expect that more activities will be hosted in 2022. In addition, we are launching an initiative in collaboration with Mahidol University to create open-source 3D models which will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

Programs[edit]

Community engagement

Photo competitions

Following the success of photo competitions such as Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monument in bringing high quality contributions and new contributors, in 2021-2022 we plans to organize Wikipedia Science Competition. In order to ensure more contributions from regular and new contributors, we have made a collaboration with IPST and NSTDA which are established by government to promote science learning in Thailand. In addition, to encourage submissions, the prizes have been listed for winners.

Program objectives
  • Increase the quality and quantity of photo submissions to be up to 3,000 uploads for all contests
  • Establish collaborations with other institutes and agencies
  • Renewal of establishing partners

Why are we doing this?

Number of participants have remained stagnant or slightly decreased these past few years. We are holding this competition in order to keep the existing participants engaged as well as getting new participations. In addition, this competition would be a good chance to get more contributions and resources about science in Thailand.

Program metrics and targets
  • Number of participants: 100
  • Number of newly registered users: 70
  • Number of pictures and videos of places uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: 3000
  • Number of agreements made with GLAM institutions to release public domain content: 3

Education

Open-source 3D medical models

We are launching an open-source initiative in collaboration with Faculty of Science, Mahidol University in Bangkok. This projects aims to increase the amount of high quality 3D medical models on Wikimedia Commons. Although 3D models could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, we notice that the quality is fairly low and the amount of these models is still limited. Our project will create life-like electronic learning materials with high degree of resemblance to the real specimens. Two methods will be used to create 3D models including 3D scanner and 3D reconstruction from CT scans. The resulting models could also be 3D-printed to create physical models for classroom use, particularly for the institutions that do not have access to real specimens.

Content evaluation

Wikimedia Thailand will continue to evaluate the quality of scientific content on the English Wikipedia. Our protocol was previously used to evaluate anatomy articles on the English Wikipedia. The results of our work was published in one of the top academic journals in the field, and can be utilized as a model for other researchers to evaluate the quality of Wikipedia articles across different fields of study. At the moment, the protocol is being used to evaluate the quality of embryology articles on the English Wikipedia.

Program objectives
  • At least 30 high quality three-dimensional models uploaded to Wikimedia Commons
  • Expansion of content evaluation to at least one field of study
  • At least 1 academic publication(s) or presentation(s) on the result of education program and content evaluation

Governance and operations

Although Wikimedia Thailand has been approved as a Wikimedia Chapter since 2019, its formal incorporation as an association according to the Thai law is yet to be accomplished. In the upcoming year, we plan to fulfill all the requirements necessary to become a legal entity and be registered as a foundation and subsequently and association. A strategic meeting of the committee members as well as representatives of the community will also take place in order to create a multi-year strategic planning and to comply with legal requirements.

Planned activities

  • Bi-annual committee meeting
  • Selection of the new Wikimedia Thailand's committee the (Year 2023 and onwards)

Program metrics and targets
  • Proposal of multi-year strategic direction of Wikimedia Thailand
  • Incorporation of Wikimedia Thailand
  • Diversification of the committee (gender, knowledge, background, age, etc.)
