Proposed participation

[edit]

I am the course development team leader for the initiative of OER course development for the undergraduate course, Software Scalability and Reengineering in WOU, Penang. In this presentation, I would like to highlight the OER course development and the phases involved for this high-level course, Software Scalability and Reengineering with the collaboration of team members from both institutions, Wawasan Open University (WOU) and University of Science, Malaysia (USM) which was successfully completed using Wikibooks. I wish to share the challenges as well as the advantages of using Wikibooks as learning resources with the participants and highlight the benefits for using Wikibooks resources that were derived during the demonstrations and showcase of Wikibooks repositories with the OER development team members. Four respective Wikibooks were identified while orientating the Wikibooks content towards the course syllabus of Software Scalability and Reengineering. The four Wikibooks namely Introduction to Software Engineering, A-Level Computing, Embedded Systems, Embedded Control Systems Design were found to be suitable to be used as distance educational courses.

During webinar sessions and showcases of exemplary of Wikibooks projects that I have initiated, the following aspects were introduced to the course team members during the development of the OER-based course including locating appropriate Wikibooks resources, understanding licensing policies and Wikibooks policies, integration and customizing new learning content and becoming a contributor/Wikibookian for a particular subject expert. I have also initiated the repositories for sharing of Wikibooks resources, Creative Commons Licensing and OER related resources using Dropbox sharing platform for OER development team members as well as users who shown interest in Wikibooks and OER development.

Goal and expected impact

[edit]

I would like to progress further and share my experience of creating open-content textbook with the participants and showcase the example of integrating Wikibooks in distance learning course content. I wish to also highlight the approach of creating learning content using Wikibooks in collaborative environment to stimulate improvement and innovation in reuse and remix of OER materials.

I would like to provide examples of innovation for creating OER using Wikibooks integration, identification of relevant OER for remix and reuse, promote the use of Wikibooks as learning resources and focusing on the process of creating OER based on Wikibooks' scope, focus and well-defined infrastructure.
