Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Bringing Onitsha on Board Wikimedia

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

Wikimedia is becoming a brand name in many states and cities in Nigeria. New groups of people are admitted to gain knowledge, participate, and contribute to Wikipedia but there is a gap in Onitsha city and the people therein. Onitsha is the commercial nerve center and biggest city in Anambra State with the largest population made up of men, women, and budding youths. Onitsha City also boasts of elites, politicians, industrialists, business people, entrepreneurs, artisans, civil servants, teachers, students, and others. There are also schools with national and international brands. Yet, this city does not have knowledge of Wikimedia and its sisters' projects on the values they add, especially on media and information literacies (MIL). With one hundred and seventy-seven communities (177) in Anambra State, Onitsha has the possibility of accommodating people from the 177 communities.

It is therefore important that the largest city in Anambra with the biggest market in West Africa should be aware of Wikimedia to participate in adding their voices, culture, livelihoods, and thoughts. This project aims to introduce Wikipedia to the people in Onitsha. The world needs to hear the voices of the people in Onitsha. The teachers and students need to enhance their information and digital literacy skills via Wikimedia for equitable quality education. Onitsha needs to come on board Wikimedia to tell their own stories too.

There will be facilitation on the basics of Wikipedia editing. This is to enable them to understand the concept of Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Then there will be training on creating and improving Wikipedia articles. A list of communities and notable places in Onitsha will be built for the training and contribution. This is a new community so time will be taken to teach them to follow up effectively. Every contribution will be evaluated through the outreach dashboard.
