ZA[edit]

Why is it so simple to write ZA instead of "South Africa" to make people guess which country it could be? Does the Committee so undemanding? JSoos (talk) 10:20, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if User: Fantom78 is just joking, but surely writing a CC book is a nice volunteer project. I would recommend removing this from the comments as a non sequitur. DeWriterMD (talk) 21:00, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

CISC ; RISC CISC (Complexe Instruction Set Computer) RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer)

Well, my mother-tongue is German - but I will write for You in English. Our main problem is the loss of authors, isn't it? The work in wikipedia is on voluntary basis. And it must stay that way, otherwise wikipedia looses its face. Support for the authors is desirable, anyway. But I personally think, that is not the main problem. To motivate more new authors (and not offend the long-standing ones!) wikipedia should open new tasks/purposes in the main projects (en-, de-, nl-, a .s. o. wikipedias) and not in wikibooks, wikipedia for kids or whatever. For the computer-servers it should not be a problem to host more content (but less projects). I will give You an example: We [2] tried some years ago to invent undersides (separated by "/" from the main articles), describing the contents of articles in easy ways (for us in medicine) for kids. I personally think, this project would have been of utmost importance, cause many articles are not understandable for the ordinary audience. In the meantime many authors might have been interested in "translating" very complicated contents to easy ones. The same with wiki-voyage. Why not make a underside "travel-info"? I know the reasons, but one could easily use a corresponding labeling. Redlinux (talk) 21:50, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Comment about the previous comments[edit]

<Sorry for my english practice, a bit rusty>I strictly understand nothing out of the 4 previous "comments" or questions, neither their relation to the topic (dont read Russian, sorry), nor their relation the one to the other. Probably a matter of display ?</Sorry>
--Kikuyu3 (talk) 13:15, 16 April 2015 (UTC) Btw : if its content is worth it, it might be appropriate that the diff in russian be translated to english ? Otherwise, (ie not worthy), please advise, as well.[reply]

Clueless[edit]

OK, I'm here because of the big bold banner at the top that's controlled by WMF (in the same area where fundraising banners appear).

  • Can someone give me a reader's digest overview of what this is all about and what I'm supposed to do? I don't care to spend an hour figuring it out.
  • What is "ZA"? An abbreviation for South Africa?
  • What is "Norge? A brand name of major household appliances, a town in Oklahoma, or Norway? "Wikimedia Norge´s work will in the next funding period concentrate on 3 programs: GLAM, Gender Gap, Academic Wikipedia." Will all of the money spent for these three programs be limited to projects within the country of Norway, or will some money be spent on these projects in other countries?
  • Please disambiguate "The Centre for Internet and Society".
  • Are any grants for funding within the United States discussed here? If not, when are where are such grants discussed?
  • The top of the page say this is about one of four WMF grantmaking programs. Is it about annual plan grants (Grants:APG)?
  • Is there a list of affiliated organizations that are eligible to apply for grants anywhere?

Thanks, Wbm1058 (talk) 20:18, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes — ZA is South Africa http://za.wikipedia.org (see Proposal Form).
Disambiguation — It is Centre for Internet and Society (India) (see Proposal Form) — Mwr0 (talk) 21:08, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Haha. http://za.wikipedia.org is Wikipedia for the Zhuang language! Wbm1058 (talk) 21:21, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Grants are international, not specific to the United States. If you are interested in reviewing the existing grant proposals, they are looking for comments from the community that will help the committee to decide who and how much grant money may be awarded. This is the 30-day review period, so I'm quite sure that no new applications are being entertained for Round 2. DeWriterMD (talk) 21:18, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So, would it be correct to assume that Wikimedia NYC and DC did not apply for any grants, or were their applications rejected in Round 1? I wasn't paying attention, so I missed the first round. Wbm1058 (talk) 21:27, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I see: Quite a bit of feedback at Grants:APG/Proposals/2014-2015 round1/Community review. Is this the final round? Wbm1058 (talk) 22:08, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I meant that ZA is South Africa in spite of za.wikipedia.org! Mwr0 (talk) 23:50, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello and welcome Wbm1058! Thanks for stopping by and asking some of these questions. Most of them have been answered (thank you to Wbm1058 and DeWriterMD), but here are the remaining answers. It is correct that Wikimedia NYC and DC did not apply for grants this round or in the last round of the funding for this grants program (the annual plan grants). They both have received funding from the project and event grants program. If you have interest, I encourage you to look through the programs that these six organizations are planning for the year, and ask any questions or offer feedback on their plans. You can review other funding programs at WMF, too. There you will find grants to individuals, groups, and movement organizations like chapters, including several in the US. Movement organizations (including thematic organizations, user groups, chapters) are eligible to apply to different grants programs depending on what they are requesting. And, yes, Norge is indeed Norway; the organization is called Wikimedia Norge. Cheers, KLove (WMF) (talk) 04:03, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My comment[edit]

My view is that since all these language areas are worthwhile projects, then funds should be dispersed to all. The ones with more needs should be appropriated more money. I assume those who put this discussion together know which language areas need more help. And the comment that we need more writers and editors is valid. Anything we can do to attract and keep serious users is good. comment Iyongi[edit]
