Questions from SAARC Grants Regional Committee[edit]

Hello @Info-farmer:

Thank you very much for your initiative. We acknowledge the importance of the proposed activities. There are a few points that are not quite clear to the committee yet. If you please answer the following few questions that will help the committee to understand your project better.

Questions:

  1. Can you please explain a little more about the “Six Palm leaf manipulations”? Eg. What will be done? Who or how will it be done? estimated time requires etc.
  2. What kind of partnership do you expect from the private libraries?
  3. What will happen to the tangible assets acquired for the project after the completion of the project? Will it be returned? Or do you plan to reuse or lend these for any future projects?

Answers;– Thanks for asking the above questions. My answers are as in the order.

  1. I can read Palm leaf at the beginners level. So, i am going to this government manuscript library with an expert who are available at the time. Then, we will create a palm leaf as File:Tamil palm-leaf manuscript of Ciṟupañcamūlam detail.jpg from different leafs. Because if you look a poem, it is not present in one leaf. so, we have to search in few leafs then we have to manipulate as in the image. Finally, i create the human readble text of the manipulated image as File:Tamil palm-leaf manuscript of Ciṟupañcamūlam detail 2.jpg. The selection of our literature poem is depends up on the availability. Thera are few more libraries exists in our TamilNadu state. But in this library alone nearly 11,000 palmleafs availble. To explore all, needs much time. So, i am doing this goal as a pilot project to prove our literary ancienity.
  2. The nationalised books are not availble in one roof. Few private libraries are availabe in our state like RMRL At the same time their collections are not fully digitalised. I will select few old books then i will make a pdf book. I alreay selected this book to do PDF which is printed in 1909. I completed my Masters degree in Library Science. So, i know how to handle a old book. And also the library authority never hesitate to handle a book. After the convertion, I will give a copy to them then i will do outreach about WMF to them, then i hope that i will get PDF book copies from them.
  3. I love my language books. Many good books are not reprinted because the paper-pack book industries declining. Old books holding libraries under fund problem like Maaraimalaiyadigal library. I am in the habit of search for good and old books in the libraires. Nowadays i am focusing on this project s:ta:விக்கிமூலம்:வ. உ. சிதம்பரம் பிள்ளை நூல்கள் which is not yet completed. So, i am going to hold the tangible asset acquired for this project which is a moble phone as i mentioned my application.

I hope i furnished all the details . Once again, i want to thank the SAARC Grants Regional Committee.

Final Feedback by the SAARC Regional Grants Committee[edit]

Suggesstion:

This is important work and needs skills and experience. Besides making screencast tutorials, The committee would request to document and share the workflow and the work experiences with the community, so that in the future the other community members can also learn from it and they can also continue/ replicate the work when necessary.

Recommendation:

The committee is recommending full funding and wishing good luck with this project.
