Comments from the MEA regional funds committee and staff

Dear Misteld, thank you for submitting your grant application. We have reviewed it and we have some concerns and questions about the proposal. These concerns should be addressed, so that we are able to move forward with your grant application. Project and activities:

• In your proposal, it should be clear why you want to run 5 in-person events. The details and locations of these 5 events should also be clear. Add these to question 3.
• We recommend that you review the project dates and extend the project duration. We don't think that one month will be sufficient to carry out the described outreach, organize and run the project. Please update question O.
• How do you plan to run any activities with high schools if the project dates are close to school vacations?
• I think that the metrics questions are not aligned with the project details. Please review questions 16 & 17 and adjust the targets with your proposal. It looks like you have provided the metrics for 1 event.
• Your learnings described in question 15 are not aligned with your project goals and activities. Please revise the learnings.

Community engagement:

• Have you reached out to Wikimedia Benin User Group regarding this proposal? Have you asked for their support in running these activities? Please add your response to question 11.
• Why are there no community members who have endorsed the project? Why even the team members haven't endorsed it? Could you please ask them to endorse the project and mention why they think it's an important one.
• Please tell us more about your plans to follow up with participants after the activities. Add these details to question 9.

Budget:

• It seems that the budget is not aligned with the described activities. Please review the proposed budget and align it with your project details.
  • Done
• The need for having 4 facilitators traveling is not clear.
  • All the participants will be new users that needs proper guide during the trainings. For efficiency, I estimate 1 facilitator to 4 participants. When one facilitator is teaching the participants others will be supervising and guiding them.
• Router rental and Projector rental: What would be the prices of these equipment if you bought them?
  • Router cost about USD 200 and Projector cost about USD 840
• What kind of prizes do you want to offer and how will you select any winners?
  • Top 3 Contributor will be given shopping gift voucher (1st: USD50, 2nd: USD 30, 3rd: USD 20). They will be chosen based on the numbers of characters added and number of articles created using the event dashboard
• You also mentioned that you would like to offer branded souvenirs to 20 participants. Can we learn more about what these are and why they are necessary to achieve the project goals?
  • The branded souvenir includes wristbands, pens, folders and notebook. This is necessary to make all participants feel as part of the global Wikimedia Movement. It will make all contributors feel as winners. It will serve as a promotional means for others to know about gungbe Wikipedia during and after the event.

• There is no place in Nigeria where they sell router that takes at least 30 people for USD 200. Airtel for example costs NGN 10,000. That's less than USD 30. Please provide a link to the router that takes at least 30 that cost USD 200 (NGN 84,200). Provide a link to the source where you rent a router that cost less than NGN 10,000 for NGN 20,000. The cost of buying a projector in Nigeria is less than NGN 100,000 (~250).  Strong support. The proposal will help in establishing gungbe Wikimedians hub in Benin Republic where the gungbe language is spoken besides Nigeria. The gungbe language group are underrepresented in the Wikimedia movement and this will help them to have a voice and share in free and open knowledge. The series of trainings and editathons will help these new editors to get a significant grasp of contributing to Wikipedia in their language.

 Strong support. I endorse this proposal because of the strategy employed is one that helped in actualizing the creation of gungbe Wikipedia. It will bring new active contributors to the gungbe Wikipedia from Benin Republic. The 100 contents creation will help the Gungbe wikipedia to cross the 1,000+ articles mark. However, Based on my experience in running similar event in Nigeria, I'll suggest you do more to bringing women that are gungbe speakers from Benin Republic on board by making provision for childcare support in your budget. Thanks.
