Activating Gungbe Wikimedians Community in Ouémé Department, Benin Republic

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Gungbe speakers in Republic of Benin are marginalized when it comes to contributing to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia. guwwiki is now activated but with little or no contribution from gungbe speakers in Republic of Benin. These people are about 60% of Gungbe speakers. This project is aimed at recruiting, training and establishing a hub of editors that will contribute to Gungbe Wikipedia and continously participate in Wikimedia projects along with the Gungbe Wikimedians community in Nigeria.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

1. Promotional Awareness: I will carry out a local promotional awareness that involves visiting local chiefs and kings and visiting high schools and markets to create awareness. Based on my consultation with the Nigeria Community, this method was effective there and I plan to use similar approach. I have met some local chiefs already and they welcome the idea of giving me time to speak at a town hall meeting.

2. Trainings / Editathos: I will carry out series of trainings and editathons on Gungbe Wikipedia. Attending series of trainings and editathons was what made me understand how to contribute to Wikipedia project. Although I was introduced to the project while in incubator, I have been grounded in it because there was series of trainings. In my little capacity, After some months I was assigned two mentees and I realized that training them regularly has helped them a lot. On a large scale series of trainings is ideal for emerging communities.
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

I will carry out 5 series of trainings and editathons in Hogbonu (Porto-Novo), in Oueme District in Benin Republic. The choice of Hogbonu is because of the high concentration of gungbe speakers residing there. 5 series of trainings is required because all participants will be new editors and this is necessary in order to reinforce their learnings and go easy on them without a rush. These trainings will take place on weekends so as to accommodate high school teachers that are gungbe speakers that will participate.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

1. Misteld: I will serve as the coordinator of the project. I am an experienced gungbe speaker and editor. I will handle the communications too.

2. Gadarawamo: Will serve as the program manaer. He is an experienced gungbe editor. He will also facilitate the event.
3. Sagbosam: As an experienced gungbe editor that is conversant with locals, he will assist in communications and serve as facilitator.
4. Wikitician: As an experienced Wikimedian, He will serve as an advisor in making sure the project goes as planned.
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

I will be engaging participants on a language Wikipedia (gungbe Wikipedia) and they are underrepresented on Wikimedia projects.

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants are gungbe speakers in Oueme district in Benin Republic. Before the event I will make announcements in town hall meetings, markets, high schools and in bus parks. I will do a physical collection of WhatsApp number that will be used to create a WhatsApp Group. I will encourage mebers of the group to post notification about the events on their social media accounts and encourage them to also invite their friends to join the group. In the WhatsApp group I will send updates on what to expect in the trainings and I will share articles in gungbe as a daily read. During the events, there will be sessions to practice what has been learnt. After the event I will be sharing editing tips on the WhatsApp Group and share links to local Wikimedia competitions. I will group the participants in fours and assign to mentors that will be available to answer their questions in real time. Where necessary I will be sharing short pre-recorded video on the WhatsApp as part of the editing tips.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

I will discuss the policies and UCCoC with the expected participants in the WhatsApp group created before the event.
