Follow-up Questions[edit]

Hello @Kunokuno,

Hope you are well. Thank you for your grant application. We have a few follow-up questions:

Programme

  • How do you plan to decide on the list of women to feature and interview?
  • How do you shortlist the 30 articles for translation from English Wikipedia?
  • How do you plan to assess the quality of new articles created? And is there a sample that you will be modelling these articles after?
  • Could you also provide a timeline for your project?

Budget

  • Staff related expenses: How do you benchmark the hourly rate? Of the roles mentioned in question 5, which of these will be covered under this budget line?

Learning, evaluation and sharing

Thank you.

Hi JChen (WMF),

Thank you for the follow-up questions. Here are the answers for each item.

Programme

  • How do you plan to decide on the list of women to feature and interview?
In last year's campaign, we were able to document several women from different fields of work. In a year, we invited women volunteers to be editors in several Wikiprojects. We will demonstrate some of their highlights as volunteer editors and event organizers. Secondly, we also plan to interview those women by which we would be creating Wikipedia articles. Since most of these people are far from our area, we would limit questioning to 5 women.
1. Women Volunteer Editors - 10 women, organizers and participants from recent campaigns, #SheSaid Campaign, #WikiForHumanRights Campaign, and those who have participated in our local event for Wikimania 2022.
2. Feminist writers and artists - 5 women, those we have identified who have impacted the culture, literature, and language in Bicol Region in the past years.
  • How do you shortlist the 30 articles for translation from English Wikipedia?
There is a suggested list to be edited during the annual Art+Feminism campaign and we will be using that list. But we would also consider creating original articles that would benefit our local Wikipedia. We are considering in using this book as a guide on identification of the significant women in our region.
  • How do you plan to assess the quality of new articles created? And is there a sample that you will be modelling these articles after?

Since most of the editors will be newbies, we expect some stub articles to be created. Another hindrance is the limited available references to develop a robust and good article. But before we go on with the actual editing, sessions discussing the basics of Wikipedia editing will be addressed. We will be using this Introduction to Wikipedia Guide and the modules on the Programs and Events Dashboard for training. We will be looking at the structure, content, and number of references to assess the quality of an article created. The organizing team will create a rubric before the actual edit-a-thons.

  • Could you also provide a timeline for your project?

Budget

  • Staff related expenses: How do you benchmark the hourly rate? Of the roles mentioned in question 5, which of these will be covered under this budget line?

The staff-related expenses will be a project-based set-up and not an hourly rate. Most tasks will be for the visual content for campaign promotion, social media management, and write-ups for Diff Blog and local publications. Since most listed volunteers are college students and will be busy with their school work, the staff will also shoulder pending tasks.

Learning, evaluation and sharing

  • The proposal captures several interesting learning questions at question 15 and core metrics in question 16. Could you provide more details on how you link the main open metrics to metric description and target?

For Editors: Is translating an article the best way to master navigating the Wikipedia platform?

From our previous experience using the Content Translation Tool, although it provides ease in editing since there is an auto-translate mechanism on it, the editor does not experience the first-hand experience of Wikipedia editing. It serves to be efficient but lacks the effectiveness of skill-building for editors. But we would still use the tool to see if we will receive the same feedback and prepare a brief report to be forwarded to the tool's developers. Quantity-wise, the tool helps in generating a large number of articles during edit-a-thons.

Does translating articles into the local language create more impact in your community rather than improving the English article?

We have observed that while our local Wikipedia is in our local language, newbie editors tend to set their preferred language to English. It is hard for them to navigate the local Wikipedia if it's in the local language, such as the commands, the warning messages, and other buttons. This brings us to the articles already available in English Wikipedia. For the past two years, we have conducted edit-a-thons, and the created articles in our local language are rarely visited or edited. This is why we also try to make significant articles for our region.

With your experience navigating the local Wikipedia, are there more international articles than local ones with regard to women and feminism?

While we don't have the actual statistics for comparing the English-translated and original articles, it is evident that a large portion of the articles we have are initially from English Wikipedia. They are rarely used since local users are also English-literate. What we lack on our local Wikipedia are articles that are significant to our region, or if not lacking, it still needs to be fully developed article.
The target numbers identify to number of editors that agrees to the description.

For Organizers:

Within three years, adding articles about women in local Wikipedia does it add to awareness with regards to feminism and women empowerment?

Although this campaign is in participation for the annual A+F campaign and we focused on bridging the gender gap in Wiki projects, it is observable among participants that there is still a lack of knowledge about the values and objectives we push on this campaign. As a network organizer, I have arranged to meet the people behind the A+F so the participants I have invited to our community would directly know what we are working on.

Would it help to create quality articles if volunteers were first oriented with regard to the feminist movement, both international and local?

This is connected to the first learning question. Participants will be evaluated after we are able to attend the A+F online meetings.

What other strategy can we do to maintain the editors’ sustainability?

This is a crucial point to consider, especially for the community organizers we are developing. This remains one of the problems we encounter. After several adjustments and strategy-making, we could create a program that maintains the sustainability of the newbie editors.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Request for Extension on Submission of Report[edit]

Hi Davit and Veronica,

I would like to request an extension for submitting my final report. As our User Group has been in the midst of setting up our new office, conducting its current programs, and onboarding its newly hired staff members, I could not fully finish my report on time. With this, I would like to request an extension on submitting my grant report. If you can allow me to submit it after a month, that would be helpful. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello @Kunokuno, thanks for posting the request. It has been formally approved. The reporting due date is moved to 31 August 2023. DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 07:17, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
