Comments from I JethroBT (WMF)[edit]

Hello Saviezvous2, Chytilova, and Synchroniseuse, and thanks for your proposal supporting improvements to French Wikipedia in terms of its representation of Quebec cinematography topics, gender diversity in filmmaking, and more broadly to support better access to Francophone knowledge. Your past work and experience with contributing to and providing training on Wikimedia projects is greatly appreciated. I am approving your proposal with the following comments and questions:

  • Would it be possible to share – either here on the talk page (if available) or in your reporting – the training materials for the three workshops described?
  • In terms of your topics in training , is there some focus on acknowledging some issues in the quality of writing about different demographic groups? As I'm sure you know, there are sometimes biases in how different biographies are written on Wikimedia (and sometimes in source material). One bias that's been observed is that in biographies of women, there sometimes a disproportionate focus on family and relationships relative to professional work and other personal accomplishments. This issue is a related, but different problem from the gender gap itself in terms of the mere presence of articles.
  • The proposed formula you've described with professional artists, training specific to relevant Wikimedia projects, and a dedicated session for editing and writing sounds quite comprehensive. About how long do you expect the workshops will take overall across these sessions?
  • It's great to see all the resources that participants will be able to use to continue their work beyond the workshop. I'm unfamiliar with Framapad, but thanks for letting us know that it's been helpful for your past work. This will also be a helpful resource for our team to share with other applicants and grantees. :)

When you're able, please respond to these questions above. Thanks very much for your proposal and good luck with the workshops! With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 23:44, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello I JethroBT (WMF)! Thank you for approving our proposal and for supporting our mission through the Rapid Fund program.
Here are our answers to your questions:
  • We can definitely share our training materials for our workshops! We could post them up here following our first workshop, which will be taking place on September 15, 2023. Does that work for you?
  • Yes, there will be specific focus in our training about acknowledging issues related to specific underrepresented demographic groups on Wiki. We will inform participants about gender biaises in biographical articles on Wikipédia, as well as :
    • The prevalence or insistance on professional experiences in Montreal and other large cities
    • The lack of documentation of women’s technical skills and roles apart from directing or acting in the film industry
    • The need for better documentation of films made by or about women and queer folks
    • The presence of articles on well-known films or directors that don’t mention the significant contribution of a specific region of Quebec to the project (such as the region where the film was shot)
    • The lack of articles or references of film on Indigenous film directors or films about Indigenous culture and communities, which are mostly located outside of large cities
    • The omission of the role of the film industry in regional culture history and economy.
  • The workshops should last about 3 hours in total. The first hour will be dedicated to the discussion portion of the session, while the 2 remain hours will be focused on training and editing.
  • Framapad is a great open-source tool for collective editing! Hopefully other initiatives can benefit from it.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have further questions.
Many thanks,
