Hello Hydra_Rain, and thanks for your proposal to support the publication of your research in an open access journal compatible with Wikimedia project policies and principles. Unfortunately, we are not able to support funding the proposal. While our team has previously funded some publication fees for researchers to publish to open access journals, we are no longer able to support through these needs through Rapid Funds for the following reasons:

  • Declines in revenue to Wikimedia Foundation – due to a number of factors – has affected our overall budget for funding in terms of what movement-related work and expenses we can grow funding for or continue to maintain as eligible. For the time being, the Rapid Fund is not adequately funded to equitably support OA publication needs across the movement.
  • While our team (Community Resources) can usually evaluate the relevance of research to the Wikimedia movement, we generally do not have adequate expertise to be able to meaningfully evaluate completed research and its potential for impact in the Wikimedia movement or related academic communities.

I understand that universities sometimes do not provide funding for OA publication costs, or have few or no options for seeking this resourcing. I assume you have looked at these options already, and if so, there is one other avenue I suggest, which is to consider submitting your research to one of the publications maintained by the WikiJournal User Group, which have no publication costs and use appropriate OA licensing. Their submission form can be found here. Separately, our team has discussed the idea that the Wikimedia Research Fund could be adapted to support requests for OA publication fees. However, no such process exists right now to support those kinds of submissions, and if there is some agreement to implement it, I don't expect a process to be ready to support more immediate publication needs.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, and thanks again for your proposal. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:33, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
