Request for additional information and feedback[edit]

Hello Nirmal Dulal, thanks for submitting this grant request. We are excited to see that you are planning to organize the second phase of the Wiki Loves Birds project.

We have reviewed the grant application and we have some questions and comments regarding it. Please add your responses directly to the application on Fluxx.

  • Could you please tell us more about the need for having a second phase of this project? Could you share some highlights from the first phase? What were your main achievements from the first Wiki Loves Birds? (add your response to question 6)
  • Thanks for providing a timeline document in your response to question 7. However, the details of activities provided in the timeline document are not clear. Could you please describe these activities? What will the following activities look like? What will you do and why?
    • Beginning of the event
    • Awareness session
    • Photowalks
    • Photoride
    • Photo Edit-a-thon
    • Closing of the event
  • Could you also provide some examples of the birds you will photograph? Do you have a list? What specific articles will you improve or create (bring examples)? You mentioned 500 images as your target, but how many unique bird species will you document? How many of them are missing from Wikimedia Commons? (question 7)
  • Who will identify the species and make sure that their name, description and other biological information is correct? How will you ensure that during these three photowalks and photorides, you take quality photos of birds that are not duplicates, especially given that you plan to spend around 2,000 USD on the travel and accommodation. (question 7)
  • You mentioned that you would engage bird photographers in the project. Could you please describe how? (question 9)

We are sending this application back to you for review. You will receive an automated email with instructions. Please review your application, provide detailed responses on Fluxx and re-submit it by 3 December 2023. Our funding decision will be based on the provided responses. Hi Davit (DSaroyan (WMF))

Regarding the aforementioned queries please find the attached answers for the respective questions below:

  • Could you please tell us more about the need for having a second phase of this project? Could you share some highlights from the first phase? What were your main achievements from the first Wiki Loves Birds? (add your response to question 6)
- Here is the project report from the first Wiki Loves Birds. As a result of our achievements we were able to be runner up at Wikimania 2019: Coolest projects - be inspired. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XETksTWIkA)

As a continuation of WLB Phase I, we’re approaching WLB phase II to discover and create more diversified contents over Wikipedia and all sister projects overcoming the success of Phase I.

  • Thanks for providing a timeline document in your response to question 7. However, the details of activities provided in the timeline document are not clear. Could you please describe these activities? What will the following activities look like? What will you do and why?
- Here’s the execution timeline we’re already working on:
  • Beginning of the event - on Feb 1
  • Awareness session - Feb 3 and 10 (Awareness session about WLB collaborating with BCN)
  • Photowalks - February - 17 and 24 and March 16 (Photowalk collaborating with BCN)
  • Photoride - March 8 - 13 (at Koshi Tappu with a group of Birds Photographer)
  • Photo Edit-a-thon - March 22-25 (to add uploaded photo to wikimedia projects)
  • Closing of the event - March 30

Apart from this timeline in other days of February and March we will capture and upload birds' photographs in Wikimedia Commons as much as we can.

In brief:

  • Awareness session - to aware and communicate with bird individual enthusiasts, activists and associative organizations.
  • Photowalks & Photoride - to discover and create real-time contents in external environment with professional photographers and enthusiasts
  • Photo Edit-a-thon - to assemble created contents to the relatable platforms and projects over Wikipedia
  • Closing event - Award and recognition ceremony for participants, organizers and associative partners
  • Could you also provide some examples of the birds you will photograph? Do you have a list? What specific articles will you improve or create (bring examples)? You mentioned 500 images as your target, but how many unique bird species will you document? How many of them are missing from Wikimedia Commons? (question 7)
- Yes, we have a list of birds to work (see here). There are many stub articles to improve and along with them there are missing articles in Nepali Wikipedia for new recorded species (i.e. w:Mountain Chiffchaff, w:Stroilated Bunting, w:Black-Breasted Thrush).
  • Who will identify the species and make sure that their name, description and other biological information is correct? How will you ensure that during these three photowalks and photorides, you take quality photos of birds that are not duplicates, especially given that you plan to spend around 2,000 USD on the travel and accommodation. (question 7)
- As we did before, we will collaborate with Bird Conservation Nepal aka Birdlife Nepal, a member of Birdlife International. Bird experts from BCN will help us to identify the species and make sure that their name, description and other biological information is correct.
Ensuring the validation we're taking photographers who're lifetime members and experts of Bird Conservation Nepal during our photo walks and photo rides.
Regarding the budget, location and timeline of photo walks and photo rides, this time we’ve planned and scheduled photowalk to new protected areas (i.e. w:Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve) to extract a wide variety of birds from the new area to add in Wikipedia articles and other wikimedia projects.
  • You mentioned that you would engage bird photographers in the project. Could you please describe how? (question 9)
- As I’ve always been a part of GLAM events like WLE and WLM, I’ve a bunch of wildlife photographers and bird enthusiasts for the project. We’re basically collaborating their contributions for Photowalks and photo rides to capture, identify and upload the contents to Wikimedia Commons.

Thanks for your response, please let me know if anything missing or needed. Regards - Nirmal Dulal (talk) 16:09, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
