Comments from DSaroyan(WMF)[edit]

Hello Musa, thanks for submitting this grant report! We are glad that you have successfully completed the project. I have a few concerns after reviewing your report:

  • You mentioned that you had 56 new users and some of them attended all 3 days of the event. However, in the event stats, I can only see contributions of two editors (you and user:Sanusi Gabo). Where are the contributions of other editors? Why haven’t they been collected?
  • Additionally, I can see that all new articles have been created by you or user:Sanusi Gabo. Did any other participant make contributions to Wikimedia projects? Your plan was to train new participants to edit Wikipedia articles. Instead, I can see that you were one of the top contributors. This is a serious concern and I need more clarifications on your end.
  • Could you please share the list of usernames of the new participants?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Please note that we won’t be able to move forward with any of your current grant requests until these issues are resolved.

Answers[edit]

Hi DSaroyan (WMF) here are the response to your concerns as follows.

1. Well as you know, Hausa Wikipedia workshop was my first project. So I make this mistake, of not telling the participants to use the hastag #HWW which is soundly regrettable. We only thought them to use Edit Summary to briefly, wrote what they did in the main editing space.

. What we did while doing the project is, we teach and show the participants thoroughly how to edit Wikipedia and when it comes to Edit Summary where ideally we should encourage them to use our hastag for the seek of the project we did not. We only explain to them the initial use of it, which is to give the summary of your editing. Thinking that when we get to write our report we will find a tool, or some other ways to be able to collect all the works of the participants and accumulated, document it for the report. In the process of doing so I contact Anasskoko. To help us with his experience and knowledge on how document the participants work even without the hastag, Meanwhile at that time he did inform me that you can only collect the work by the use of hastag. Which we did not encourage at the project days. Due to lack of knowledge then.

. Looking at that and we look at the importance of collecting the work, in other to properly document the project.

. As we already keep in touch with the participants through our WhatsApp group, I quickly explain to them that they should now use the hastag for the seek of the project. While doing so most of the participants were throwing confusing questions that they did not understand at all. This is because we already told them that, the space for edit summary is meant to briefly wrote what you did in the main editing space.

. So in other not to confuse them, looking at that they were new then and inexperienced. And with the thought that we will be having other subsequent project the likes of (Hausa Wikipedia Edit-a-thon) we plan to explain to them thoroughly on the use of hastag specifically for a particular project for collection and documentation of the project work. Which we now did during (Hausa Wikipedia Edit-a-thon) and the normal use of edit summary for the general use of editing Wikipedia.

. Which we now happens to do that, all thanks to Wikimedia foundation for giving us the advantage of organising and funding the (Hausa Wikipedia Edit-a-thon). We were able to do that. We explain to them and even differenciate the use of hastag in edit summary for documentation and collection of project data. and the normal use of edit summary without project seek.

. And you can vividly check that, as I already submit the report for the (Hausa Wikipedia Edit-a-thon). You can view the hastag #HWE and be able to see that alot of participants now use the hastag for their work so as to make it easier to collect and documents the project work.

. Also some of the participants manage to create new articles right at the spot. And they used the hastag and they are still using the hashtag. You can all view that thorugh the hastag.

2. Yes! The reason why you see most of the new articles were created by me, during the workshop. the participants have some difficulties while create new articles, more especially with referencing and citations. With this knowledge I encourage them to be in touch with us as we will subsequently teach them properly on how to create new articles. and because we don't want them to produce bad work without good or proper citations we urge them to keep in touch with us as other project will come and we will have enough time to teach them that, which we did now.

.Also, we were aware that, we made the mistake on not encouraging the use of the hastag, that's why I participate in the project work In other to make sure that all the project goals were achieved.

. Why because, I cannot be able to trace all the works of the other participants and on the process of explaining to them, they were somehow confused. Then I decided to participate in other to see that the project goals were achieved. And properly use the hastag since then, the rest of the participants does not know how to use the hastag. That's why and this is the explanation on why I'm one of the major contributors on the project work.

. Even though, then. Most of the participants have difficulties while creating new articles, we now during the (Hausa Wikipedia Edit-a-thon), find time and explained thoroughly on that.

Having this other projects (Hausa Wikipedia Edit-a-thon) helps us alot in teaching them and laying more emphasis on how to create new articles and making proper citations.

Report accepted[edit]

Hi Musa Vacho77, thank you for your detailed response.

  • I'm glad to hear that you have learned how to use the tracking tool and you will be tracking participants' contributions during your other projects better. You may also want to use the Outreach Dashboard to track contributions. Personally, I think that the Outreach Dashboard is more convenient to use in similar events than the hashtag tool.
  • In the future, please include similar details into the final report, so that it is clearer for us and other readers.

Thanks again for your contributions to the Wikimedia movement! This final report has been accepted which means that the grant is completed. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 10:33, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DSaroyan (WMF) Thanks for your support throughout the project.

I will do try and do so in my next report.

And I will also try the Outreach Dashboard for tracking contributions.

Thanks a lot, best regards. Musa Vacho77 (talk) 07:25, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
