Comments from I JethroBT (WMF)[edit]

Hi Kamal Osama and congratulations on your first Wiki Loves Earth event! Thanks for your report on the event. Here are my comments/questions on your report:

  • It's very impressive to see the extent to which you are able to recruit participants to create accounts and contribute in these events. I did want to ask more about what new skills participants learned as a part of your workshop-- what were contributors able to do that they could not do before?
  • I don't understand what is meant by "This contest was recorded at level fifteen among the participating countries" in your report. What does "level fifteen" refer to?
  • You've reported that 40% of the images taken have been used on Wikimedia projects, but the data from this page doesn't reflect that; the data from the page shows that about 3.4% of images were used on projects (i.e. 47 out of 1378). Is there some misunderstanding here?
  • It's really good to see that you are pushing to nominate some images for featured status on Arabic Wikipedia and on Commons. These images are really outstanding and show a lot of technical care on the part of the photographers. I hope they get featured! Have you also considered nominating some of these images on Commons for quality image status?
  • In terms of the remaining funds, let me check on whether funds can be transferred to Wikimedia Egypt as you've requested. I'll reply back here in the next day or two about that.

When you're able, please respond back to these questions. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 20:09, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JethroBT,
Thank you for your comments and questions. Answering your questions, The workshop was held one week after our trip to give the participants an opportunity to make edits on their own photos and sharing them within the contest. the knowledge and skills that they were taught during the workshop were as follows;
  • They took some ideas on how Wikipedia works. The history of Wikipedia, how to make edits "specially" in Arabic Wikipedia, how their edits could be revised, how to upload photos on Wikimedia commons, quality photos, share them under the term of "free license" and how to participate officially in the contest. Some of them, before that workshop, didn't even know how to make edits and share photos on Wiki common and the contest.
  • Regarding your second questions. During the preparation of report, We saw the Egypt rank among the participating country here. Basically, Many info. on this report is taken according to this Statistics and we do believe it's genuine.
  • Regarding your third question, I do agree with you that the number of photos used in Wikimedia projects were few. The 40% percent is actually refers to our "target" which was 150 photos or more to be shared within articles or projects... I think time was not with us that time to share all the participated photos!
  • Regarding your forth question; Yes, We hope those photos got featured. Yes, We paid attention for the quality images and we shared your link at the beginning on the FB contest page and talked about the quality photos in the workshop but unfortunately, I couldn't nominate more photos as recently, only administrators in commons can nominate. I tried to ask an admin in Jordan but I found no answer.
  • For the remaining funds, I have checked with bank for transferring it back and it will cost the following;
  1. 0.3% with min. 10 USD and Max. 100 USD
  2. 20 USD swift fees
  3. 5 USD correspondent bank fees.
Am ready to send them back or wherever the WMF wants according to our terms agreements.

@Kamal Osama: Thanks for your responses. Did you get a chance to read what I've written below? Are there any other things you'd like to do with the remaining funds? I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 06:42, 20 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Thank you for giving attention...--Kamal Osama (talk) 17:29, 22 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Kamal Osama: Regarding the remaining funds, unfortunately they cannot be transferred to Wikimedia Egypt as you've requested as this is not permitted under the terms of the grant agreement. Furthermore, sending the funds back to the Wikimedia Foundation may not be sensible if you are subjected to wire fees. If you haven't sent the funds back to the Wikimedia Foundation yet, you would be welcome to use the remaining funds toward any mission-aligned activities. One suggestion is that you could create some additional prints or copies of photos form your event to distribute to participants, but let me know what you would like to do. Thanks! Yes, here we are. We are actually satisfied with the number of prints we made. We can make some souvenirs for the contest or the WMF can suggest any! --Kamal Osama (talk) 17:29, 22 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Kamal Osama: The souvenirs for the contest sound like a good idea. I don't have any immediate suggestions at the moment, but this learning pattern offers some useful guidance. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 16:37, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
