From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Comments from DSaroyan (WMF)[edit]

Hi R.T.Argenton, thank you for submitting this Rapid Grant request. I have three requests after reviewing it.

  • We now require all grantees to announce their projects and receive the Wikimedia community feedback in advance. Could you please announce this project and grant on the relevant Portuguese community pages on the target wikis? Community notification may be most appropriate on a village pump, talk page, or mailing list. Please paste a link into the proposal page to where the relevant communities have been notified of this proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
  • Could you please provide more details about produced videos? What topics will they cover, what's the proposed quality and length, etc.?
  • Additionally, who will be compensated for producing the videos? Approximately, how many hours of work will be compensated?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 09:59, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Course material and course[edit]

Ni! I like the idea of this project. I'll share a few observations:

  • You say part of the project takes place at Wikiversity, yet you do not mention how the course would be hosted there: who would be the participants, who would be the instructors, the schedule. On the other hand, if you just intend to produce and publish course material for people to follow by themselves, the book at Wikibooks should be enough.
  • I think the proposal would benefit from a clearer distinction between the goals and details of the activities related to (a) the production of course material, (b) hosting the course with participants, and (c) the media campaign.
  • Same goes for how the project activities will be split between Commons, Wikibooks and Wikiversity.
  • Who is the intended audience? Is it people who own full featured digital cameras? Or cell-phones cameras? Why?
  • Relatedly, what's the strategy for the media campaign? Isn't Instagram the main place for photography nowadays? Yet it's not even mentioned. Aren't there institutions that can be contacted to help disseminate the course?
  • While not necessary, it would be nice to list some numeric targets.

Solstag, Ni!
Thank you for the observations!
The course will be mostly "people to follow by themselves", and I will be the responsible, at last during the following years. But as you can see: pt:Curso de Fotografia, the course have several activities, and probably there will be a space to people have a proper feedback about their answers inside the Wikiversidade, not a thing at Wikilivros. Moreover, Wikiversidade have more tools to deal with the activities than Wikilivros. And I am expecting some discussions during the courses.
It is more a free course, than a schedule attendance. I can have a certain fix audience in some point, but is not the point.
The Wikimedia Commons will receive future material produced by the students and have links to the course. And also could have, a bit of difficult to track effect, that is the possible improve of the overall quality of the future collaborations.
I do not know if I will invest in Wikilivros, my first idea was to create a robust and detailed material to serve as a support to students that wanted a deeper material. I am not seeing possibles benefits at this moment to invest the amount of time necessary to accomplish this goal.
Who is the intended audience? Is it people who own full featured digital cameras? Or cell-phones cameras? Why?
This was a easy one, the course is all oriented to any kind of camera, for a wide variety of reasons, being accessibility the most important one.
* Relatedly, what's the strategy for the media campaign? Isn't Instagram the main place for photography nowadays? Yet it's not even mentioned. Aren't there institutions that can be contacted to help disseminate the course?
This type of course will not be proper to the Instagram, however it will be used to bring people to it. We have been using Instagram to bring volunteers to the Wiki Loves Earth, and we have some know-how on social media. When the course will be ready to launch, I will create proper material to publicized it, including other organizations, media, and social media.
I was doing big moves and due to some questions with the Wiki Movement, I was in a wikibreak.
Bye! Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 02:07, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ni! Thanks for the answers and for the updates to the proposal. I don't see any obstacle to the success of the proposed project. Abraços, Solstag (talk) 00:27, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on your proposal[edit]

Hello @R.T.Argenton:,

Thanks again for submitting your Rapid Grant request. I have reviewed it and here are some questions and comments about your proposal. In terms of the project´s contribution to the movement, you mention that you “will invest energy to people reached by this course, go down in the funnel, and may become a Wikimedia Movement volunteer”. Please share with us:

  • How could you ensure that the production of these videos actually improves the photographic capability of Wikimedia volunteers?
  • Please share if you have identified the audience of volunteers or potential volunteers that the project aims to support?
  • What is your specific strategy for the course as a tool to acquire new volunteers to contribute to wiki projects?

Please make the requested changes and respond to my questions on the same page. Best regards,

@MCasoValdes (WMF):

  • How could you ensure that the production of these videos improves the photographic capability of Wikimedia volunteers?
I've been doing photo workshops to the Wikimedia initiatives for several years, i.e. for part of the Category:Projeto Commons da Faculdade Cásper Líbero
This course is an extension of the pocket courses that included already thousands of contributions.
It was noticeable the difference between without and with some instructions.
  • Please share if you have identified the audience of volunteers or potential volunteers that the project aims to support? , What is your specific strategy for the course as a tool to acquire new volunteers to contribute to wiki projects?
These questions were already answered above, and answered in the “will invest energy to people reached by this course, go down in the funnel, and may become a Wikimedia Movement volunteer”.
A broad audience is what we focus on when we are talking about the top of the funnel. Any person with some interest in photography could consume the content produced, and during the course, small insertions about Wikimedia Movement will be delivered, to the ones that are interested in going deeper. That is a very established via to gather the attention of new people. Moreover, being for everyone, every volunteer, even photographers, will be benefited, as these course focus on areas of the knowledge of photography that is not well explored, and a similar course cost hundreds of dollars i.e. that a Brazilian (or Latam) reality is a prohibitive price.
To achieve the public, we will use our social media, which is key to Brazil strategies, we had a successful campaign pm WLE BR 2020 using only our social media and the social media of our collaborators.

Grant approved[edit]

Hello Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton,

Thank you for your work on the grant request. We've reviewed the final proposal and approved the grant in the amount of 1,840.89 USD.

To ensure that the production of these videos actually improves the photographic capability of Wikimedia volunteers, I would recommend you could coordinate with lead organizers of major photographic efforts to ensure there is a proactive effort to share and use the video training amongst the volunteers of the Wikimedia movement directly involved in photographic activities.

For the next steps, please follow the instructions provided via email.

Thank you for your work for the Wikimedia movement. Please let us know if you have any questions. We are here to support you in making your grant a success!

Best regards,
