Reallocation of extra funds for 2022 Months of African Cinema Global Contest[edit]

Project Overview[edit]

For the 2022 Months of African Cinema Global Contest, the central organizing team for The AfroCine Project have decided to have a contest centered around improving existing AfroCine-related articles, rather than creating new ones. The methodology to be used this year is centered on infoboxes. Since this is not a full-blown contest like previous years, it was agreed that we should request to use remaining funds from 2021 edition.

Project Goal[edit]

More than 10,000 articles have been created on AfroCine-related topics via Months of African Cinema since 2016. There are also thousands of articles in this area that are stubs. The goal of the contest is to improve the quality of these African cinema-related articles through appropriate addition of infoboxes or populating parameters in existing infobox. No new article will be created for the contest.

Impact[edit]

  • At least 500 existing articles will be impacted through addition of infoboxes or population of existing infobox parameters
  • At least 30 Wikimedians will participate in the contest

Budget[edit]

The proposed budget for the contest is straightforward:

  • First prize: $150
  • Second prize: $100
  • Third prize: $50

All prizes will be in form of gift cards.

At least 30 Wikimedians will participate in the contest 31 participants indicated participation for the contest The actual number that actually contributed to articles was far lower due to issues ranging from lack of proper orientation and logistics.

Learning[edit]

  • What did not work so well?
  1. The methodology for the contest was quite innovative, and most of the participants, who were new editors and found it interesting to engage.
  2. There were no serious issues from page patrollers so it can be deduced that page additions were mostly constructive.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Due to modest resources, we couldn't hold webinars to properly orientate editors. A number of persons wanted to participate but didn't understand how to go about it
  2. Jury process was also quite hectic. Only the core organizing team reviewed almost 2000 articles.
