Comments from WMF[edit]

Hello Wikimedia Nigeria, thank you for submitting the final report of your project. We are glad that Nigeria joined the Wiki Loves Monuments contest. We also apologize for the inconvenience caused by our delayed review of your grant. I have reviewed your report and have the following concerns and questions.

  • I looked into the category of all images from WLM 2019 in Nigeria and could see many images that do not depict monuments: coins, signage, people, animals, cultural activities, events, food, etc. How can you explain this? Did you have any strategy of filtering images or guiding participants? What will you do to prevent a similar situation in the future?
Thanks for your questions. Participants are members of the public and the lunching events include a session where the rules of the contest were highlighted and presented. So, participants were fully aware of the rules and the theme of the contest. For WLX (WLA, WLM & WLE) contest, the challenge of having photos that do not depict contest theme are the same. This is something the global community and contest organizers are still unable to deal with because they do not have power over what is uploaded by participants. If the uploaded images are in scope on Commons, they are generally accepted regardless of whether they depict the contest's theme or not. Image filtering could be done with a bot but how the bot would recognize images that depict monument seems almost impossible and we aren't sure the international team of WLX (WLM, WLE &WLA) have such bot in operation.
  • After three months from the completion of the contest, I can see that the number of used images - 67 (3%) - is not even close to your initial target. Could you please explain the reason you have a few images used on other Wikimedia projects? Are you planning to increase this number in the future? Please also update your report with this number.
We couldn't organize an edit-a-thon to use images collected on Wikipedia articles because the approved fund (1000USD) was insufficient to organize it. We planned to organize a separate project that would primarily focus on the use of images collected on Wikipedia article. We have updated the report with this new data 67 (3%). Thank you.

I am looking forward to your response! Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 15:57, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
