Report Accepted[edit]

Hi kwameghana!

Thank you for this beautiful report! We on the committee thoroughly enjoyed look at your photo gallery--thank you for sharing your lovely photos! Also, congratulations on signing up five new users! You obviously conveyed your enthusiasm for sharing photographs on Commons!

There are a few points of feedback I'd like to offer for your consideration as you continue to think about how to engage contributors to Commons:

  • Some Wikimedia users prefer to keep their identities anonymous. For this reason, when reporting users you've signed up, it may be best to list usernames only, without providing the actual names of individuals.
  • I want to make sure you are aware of the guidelines on Commons about publishing a photograph of an identifiable individual, as you have in your photo gallery. Commons does not require consent from individuals photographed in public places (as I think is the case with your photos?), but I still wanted to include the link and make sure you are aware of the policy:
    • "The subject's consent is usually needed for publishing a photograph of an identifiable individual taken in a private place, and Commons expects this even if local laws do not require it. In many countries (especially English-speaking ones) the subject's consent is not usually needed for publishing a straightforward photograph of an identifiable individual taken in a public place. However, the term published should not be construed to include commercial use, as consent is usually required in these situations. Moreover, the country specific consent requirements vary enormously. Many factors can determine whether and what degree of consent is required."
    • I'm unfamiliar with local laws in Ghana and am just communicating the policy on Commons. If you're not sure about the requirements specific to Ghana, it might be worth asking the local User Group about this.
  • Lastly, I wanted to encourage you to think about ways you may be able to follow up with the five users that you helped sign up. I checked the Global User Contributions of the usernames you provided, and so far none of the five have made any content contributions. I imagine it might be difficult to conduct a substantial enough training in the field for people to feel confident and motivated enough to upload their photos on their own later on. It's not required by the terms of your grant, but if you would like to, you might reach out to the users you helped sign on via their talk pages to see if they have any questions.

There is a small underspend on your grant (that is, you have not spent all of the money awarded to you) and our Grants Administrator has advised me that you should keep the remaining funds since there isn't a good method of returning them.

Thank you for your work on behalf of the Wikimedia movement, kwameghana! We appreciate your enthusiasm about representing Ghana on Commons.

Warm regards,
