Igbo Wikimedians User Group/Events/2024 Activities
The new year began with community members sharing their insights and thoughts through videos, which were then disseminated via various channels. Additionally, the community celebrated Wikipedia turning 23, receiving numerous goodwill messages shared across social media platforms. The user group also issued a call for the first annual micro grant, encouraging individuals, hubs, or fan clubs to initiate projects. Below is a summary of all the events.

Fixing reference errors on Igbo Wikipedia 3.0, 13/04/2024
[edit]There are about 500+ articles in Igbo Wikipedia that have these error, and correcting these errors would help in improving the quality of Articles in Igbo Wikipedia thereby working towards the project 2030 movement to diversify the WIKIMEDIA platform by involving the underrepresented. It will also tend to improving the old editors skills and enlightening them more on how to remove *red links* mostly seen on translated articles. A mini contest was also organised for the new participants and three lucky winners got their gift vouchers. It was held on Satu, 13th April, 2024 at Nigerian Book Foundation, Awka, Anambra State. At the end of the event, a total of 25 editors logged into the tracking dashboard with a total of 400+ edited articles and 800+total edits as at 16th April, 2024, 23:59 (WAT). see event dashboard] for more details

Igbo Wikimedia Awareness and training in ANAMBRA STATE POLYTECHNIC MGBAKWU/support to open Igbo Wikimedia fun Hub MGBAKWU 24/4/2024
[edit]The idea of this project in this institution is to create awareness, sensitize and recruit new editors to know about Igbo Wikimedia as a free knowledge base platform so as to help improve the quality, credibility and reliability of Igbo Wikipedia and it's sister projects; And also giving the institution/students and lecturers an online presence on Wikipedia. Nonetheless, this project also help in contributing in the sum of all Human knowledge by documenting our Igbo language, culture, environment etc, making them visible to the world.This project also help in increasing Igbo language contents on Wikimedia and the Internet. Visibility for igbo culture on wikidata 12/04/2024
[edit]This training was aimed at translating descriptions of articles on igbo culture, thereby creating visibility for igbo culture on wikidata. Hence the training helped old wikimedians to enhance there skills and also tutor new wikimedians on how to contribute their knowledge to the wikimedia foundation through the wikidata project. The training held on Friday 12th April 2024 at Management Sciences Nnamdi Azikiwe university, Awka, Anambra state:Anambra state. A mini - contest that lasted for a period of one week, i.e from 12th April 2024 - 19th April 2024 was organised and the Top 3 contributors were rewarded with gift vouchers. The event ended with a total of 40 editors logged into the tracking dashboard with a total of "1.64k edited articles" and "6.12k total edits" as at 21st April 2024 23:59pm (WAT). LEVERAGING ON WIKIPEDIA TO ENHANCE STUDENT'S READING CULTURE IN ORLU
[edit]The event is with the theme:" Leveraging on Wikipedia for the advancement of student's reading culture” took place on the 1st of May, 2024 at school of Health and Management sciences Amaigbo, Nwangele, Orlu. The event was a successful one despite all odds which include; public holiday, student's examination schedule, internet coverage, electrical gadgets and other challenges. The participants trooped out en mass for the event and they learned translation of Articles from English to igbo language, adding references, and introduction to Wikipedia editing. The sub-theme of the event is from Art and Feminism (Women's health). The participants underwent series of training both group and individualized. A student won the prize of the first person correct question respondent and the participants were elated on it. The participants were set on Article translation contest which began on the Ist - 21st May, 2024. The first, second and third best translators would be selected for prize award. The first prize translator recipient was Ann Audrey, second prize recipient was MaryFidel and the third prize recipient was Tochukwu Agugua. Translation of catalogues of available functions 21/04/2024
[edit]The implementation of the Translation of catalogues of available functions in the Igbo Wikimedians Community was organized by 3 dedicated members of the Igbo Wikimedians community, both bringing their skills and human capacity on the table for the success of the project.

The community held an online launch session for its initiative from April 21st to April 27th, 2024, with approximately 50 members in attendance. The attendees in this session received information regarding the project's translation of function catalogs. The importance of the selected issue to the community members was also explained to the participants.
Timetable and Results of the Edithaton Contest
The competition began on April 1, 2024, and ran for seven days. A total of 33 participants was registered on both the event page and outreach dashboard. The results were revealed a few days later, and the total edits of 1,010 strings and functions was translated into the native Igbo language. Below are the link to the Event page And the Dashboard
Obstacles
The xtools translation tool allowed us to compile the translations, however the predefined tracking metrics "outreach dasboard" was unable to track the wikimedian project (Wikifunctions).
Mapping out Nigeria churches and Mosques on wikidata 6/04/2024
[edit]Mapping out Nigeria churches and mosques project came up with the aimed at updating and improving the number and quality of contents on Wikidata. The goal is to increase the number and visibility of Churches and mosques on Wikidata by adding more items as well as providing a geo-location. We had an online training on 6th of April 2024. many participants joined during the training section. they were exposed more on how to search for already existing items on wikidata, how to create items,how to update and improve already existing items on wikidata. We had 7 days edit athon section from 6th-13th April 2024. At the end of the project 15 participants were selected as the winners This was achieved by mapping churches and mosques across Nigeria using Wikidata. The project significantly improved public access to information, with over 900 wikidata items across Nigerian churches and mosques being created and updated with geo-location on Wikidata. The initiative fostered active community participation, with more than 30 editors contributing updates and improving to the data. The project's goals and objectives were fully achieved.

Documenting the Igbo Verbs
[edit]The event documenting the Igbo was held physically at Awka, Anambra State, documenting the Igbo Verbs on the Igbo Wiktionary. The Igbo Wikitionary is a template use in digitizing the Igbo language. During this project, we mostly invited new editors to teach them how to Edit the Wiktionary interface. It was a one day training and Edit session. Participants learnt what the Igbo verb is all about and how to contribute. Add the end of the event they contributed 400+ total edit. A total number of 15 new participants attended the event. The event was cordinated by Akwugo and Emilliana.

Mapping Nigeria Police Stations on Wikidata 25/04/2024
[edit]The Nigerian Police Stations Mapping Project was initiated with the goal of enhancing accessibility, transparency, and accountability of Nigeria police stations on wikidata. This was achieved by mapping police stations across Nigeria using Wikidata.
Key Achievements: • Public Access: The project significantly improved public access to information, with over 800 wikidata items across Nigeria Police stations being created and updated on Wikidata.
• Community Engagement: The initiative fostered active community participation, with more than 20 editors contributing updates and corrections to the data.
Challenges:
• Data Accuracy: Ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the data presented a considerable challenge, necessitating ongoing validation and community involvement.

IMPROVING THE LEXEMES DATABASE IN IGBO WIKIMEDIA 18/05/2024
[edit]the purpose of this training was aimed at improving the database of lexemes in Igbo wikimedia ,thereby creating more Lexemes and also improving an existing once. At the cause of project, many participants joined us on the online training section. the training was held on the 18th of May 2024. It's tend to improve the old editors skills and enlightening them more on how to edit Lexemes on wikidata,This was achieved by providing a red list with list of Lexemes Data to work or improve on. The participants were set on a contest which began on the 18th - 25th May, 2024. wish 10 (Ten) participants were selected as the winners. At the end of the event 4,541 edit was improved upon and a total number of 20 participants attended the event. The event was a big success.

Updating Nigerians Professional Footballers Info on Wikidata
The "Updating Nigerians Professional Footballers Info on Wikidata" project aimed at enhancing the quantity and quality of information about Nigerian professional footballers on Wikidata. The goal was to increase the visibility and accuracy of information by adding new items and updating existing ones with detailed data, including biographical details and career statistics.
We hosted physical training sessions and events, providing hands-on experience to participants. The training began with an in-person event, where participants learned how to search for existing items on Wikidata, create new items, and update and improve existing items.
The contest lasted for over a month, at the conclusion of the project, we successfully created and updated over 500 Wikidata items related to Nigerian professional footballers
The project saw active participation, with over 35 individuals attending the physical training sessions, and 19 editors contributing through the dashboard. The initiative not only met its goals and objectives but also significantly improved public access to information about Nigerian footballers on Wikidata. The community's engagement and contributions were commendable, making this project a significant success.

Exploring Wikisource Project, 18/05/2024
[edit]Exploring Wikisource program was a Two-day online program which held on the 18th and 19th, May, 2024.
The event was organized so as to equip members of the community with knowledge to effectively contribute to Wikisource. It also focused on tutoring editors on how to make edits on the Igbo WikiSource. Participants were introduced to Wikisource, containing Author's pages, indexes, etc. and were also trained on how to create translate index pages, Index pages totalling to 1,902 were translated.
Contest was also organised for the participants and three winners got their gift vouchers. At the end of the event, there was a total of 1,902 pages translated as at 27/05/2024. A total of 41 editors engaged the dashboard.

Although the Dashboard was not able to track the edits, I utilized the Wikisource Contest Tool as a means of tracking participants edits and below is the link which also contains a rundown of participants score while editing.
Adding Igbo Descriptions on WikiCommons: Continuation of Wikimedia Awareness in the Ikwerre Community 13/04/2024
[edit]The continuation of digital Literacy through adding of Igbo descriptions on wiki commons, this project is carried out to keep the community moving and to create more awareness in the Ikwerre community using the Wikimedia Commons as the target project.
This project was implemented in two folds (online and In-person) The online session was first held on 13th April 2024 but due to network and technical glitches, was rescheduled to 14th April 2024. This online session was solely to give them a glimpse of what the project entails and for the benefit of those who can't join the physical session to guide and educate them more about the Wikimedia community and how to add Igbo descriptions on the images on Wiki commons. This was supported by an in-person session which is a continuation of the online session. This ensures a one-on-one training and guidance on the project activities. During this session, new participants were assisted in Account creation
Project Outcome At the end of the project, 17 participants were successfully registered on the Dashboard, and a total of 469 edits were recorded as captured on the event dashboard. This project was coordinated by Sylvaline39 and Co-facilitated by Iwuala Lucy and Juliegwen
Second half micro grant activities
[edit]DOCUMENTING AFRICAN FABRICS "This project aims to document and give Igbo description of different African fabrics that enhances African beauty, through high-quality photographs. Fabrics such as Mkpuru oka, Ikpirikpa Azu, Onugbagidi, Oche Eze etc. By documenting and sharing these images on Wikimedia Commons, we will Promote, conserve and create awareness of Africa's unique beautiful fabrics, and enhance the visibility of Africa's natural beauty globally This project will also Support education and research through free access to information and high-quality images . It involve capturing different African fabric and properly document and categorize these photos and close knowledge gap on Wikimedia. Without this project the names of African fabrics will go into extinction. The event took place on the 14th August,2024 at Book Foundation in Kenneth Dike library Akwa. We had an online training on 18th of August 2024. many participants joined during the training section. they were exposed more on how to search for already existing items on wikidata, how to create items,how to update and improve already existing items on wikidata. On August 17, 2024, a well-attended in-person training session took place at Book foundation in kenneth Dike library Awka, equipping participants with essential skills in creating and enhancing Wikidata entries. Specifically, attendees learned about:

The project ":Gaining Visibility for Secondary Schools in Eastern Nigeria on wikidata " is focused on the recognition and representation of various Secondary Schools in Eastern Nigeria including, Anambra State, Enugu state, Imo state e.t.c.
It’s major goal aimed at Improved representation, enhanced discoverability,increased accessibility of Secondary Schools in Eastern Nigeria on wikidata items by creating and translating these items to igbo languages.
On August 29th, 2024, a well-attended in-person training session took place at the Faculty of Management Science Hall, equipping participants with essential skills in creating and enhancing Wikidata entries. Specifically, attendees learned about:
Researching, Documenting, and Creating new items, Translating descriptions items into Igbo language, Improving existing items on Secondary Schools in Eastern Nigeria.
Following the training, a three days editing marathon provided an opportunity for participants to apply their knowledge. Three outstanding contributors were recognized for their exceptional efforts in increasing the visibility of Secondary Schools in Eastern Nigeria on Wikidata.

Challenges
- Engagement: Out of the 31 registered participants, only a few contributed because they didn't understand how it works.
- Awareness: There may be low awareness of the existence of such projects among native speakers, limiting the pool of potential contributors.
- Expertise: Fewer contributors might have a deep understanding of both Igbo and the editorial standards of Wikivoyage, leading to potential gaps or inconsistencies in the phrasebook.

Recommendation
To improve the documentation of Igbo words on Wikivoyage's phrasebook:
- The project needs to be explore more.
- There should be regular updates and reviews to better travelers pronunciation.
Mapping out healthcare centres in Nigeria 11/08/2024
[edit]The project "Mapping out Healthcare Centres in Nigeria" showcases the success of Wikidata in revolutionizing healthcare accessibility in Nigeria. By leveraging on the vast and interconnected information available on the official website of healthcare centres in Nigeria, over 1000 healthcare centers across Nigeria have been accurately mapped out, providing crucial data on their locations, services offered, and contact details. The training was held on 11th August 2024 which was followed by an edit-a-thon that ended on 17th August 2024, we recorded over 1000 items created... Say It Right 1.0 - 1/09/2024
[edit]The project, SAY IT RIGHT aimed to record pronunciations of names of individuals with live pages on Igbo Wikipedia to be stored as audio files on Commons and utilized on the corresponding pages using the audio template on the Igbo Wikipedia to avoid mispronunciation of names of Africa origin.

Challenges
- Low Engagement: Out of the 44 registered participants, only 16 contributed because the list was exhausted quite early.
- Missing Edits: Some edits were not recorded on the hashtag tool because of the use of wrong hashtag by participants.
Outcomes The hashtag tool was used to track the project and here is the result.
UP SKILL STUDENT'S WRITING CULTURE IN IGBO WIKIPEDIA
[edit]On October, 30th 2024 history was made at school of Health and Science Technology, Amaigbo, Nwangele in Imo state; students trooped out in their numbers to participate in Wikipedia translate-a-ton project. The event was a unique one as new college students participated as first time Wikipedia translation.The event witnessed participant's introduction, user account creation, introduction to five pillars of Wikipedia, translation from English to Igbo language; and others. There were (23) new students who joined Wikimedia as a new volunteer editors, in total we had (28) registered participants and (14) non registered participants and (3) lecturers. A female student won the first translator of the event award. There was a facilitator's guide, peer learning and individualized learning sessions. Participants were well entertained with edible refreshment and internet data disbursement was offered to them. The event contest began on the 30th October - 1sth November, 2024. Three students won the event contest and they have received their prizes. We used WMF's Event tracking tool to track participants' performance, here is the event tool link for the project: https://ig.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:Up_skill_students_writing_culture_in_Igbo_wikimedia This was not without it's challenges, this includes: 92% of participants were new college students and internet connection disruption. Nevertheless, the event recorded a (206) English language articles translated to Igbo while our expected outcome was (100) articles.The event was a huge success.
