Meta talk:Child protection policy

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Ok, I think it's a First step, to protect children and should be translate in every Language-version. It Could also be implemented (?) In every Wikipedia:Introduction. What so you think? --Rogi (talk) 15:50, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Although this proposed policy page would affect only this project. There's a Child protection proposed global policy page which is in development already. This page aims to fill the gap until such a global policy gets approved; however with the ToU at hand, no real gap exists as the Foundation IMHO will terminate access to anyone at any project who commits any of the activities mentioned in this page, with or without policy. Resuming earlier discussion[edit]

Hi, all. Some time ago, I was asked for feedback on the question of underage Wikimedians in several contexts. I have discussed with legal and can provide some information. (As a reminder, the WMF legal team can only advise WMF, so, as they often note in reviewing issues with the community, our response represents a point of view to help in research but does not technically constitute legal advice.)

While there is no finalized global policy, there are already policies in place on a number of projects intended to help ensure appropriate interaction with children. (Here is a list of 8 such policies, and there is a proposed policy on Commons.) In addition, our current Terms of Use, which apply across all projects, prohibit certain actions harming children:

  • Posting child pornography or any other content that violates applicable law concerning child pornography.
  • Soliciting personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 18 for an illegal purpose or violating any applicable law regarding the health or well-being of minors.

The principles currently set out in the draft local policy here, MarcoAurelio, appear reasonable. :) The community may, of course, draft additional terms for that policy, with proper community consensus, keeping in mind our Terms of Use. Some examples of other companies with child-related policies:

Online communities should generally avoid seeking information that can actually identify users, including children, to ensure respect of their privacy.

I hope this is helpful. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 23:15, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Overdue[edit]

Long overdue, but I humbly believe this has the minimal consensus (from this page, and from Talk:Child protection given the similar content) to be enacted. Additionally, as mentioned above, the Terms of Use also prohibit the activities described in this policy, making it de-facto enacted globally.

I believe we should mark Child protection as a general informational page (and not a proposed policy), but that's a discussion for another day.

I hope you agree with this, and welcome any comments you may have - TNT 💖 16:28, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
