Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Tamil Wikinews

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The result of the following proposal for closing a WMF project is to KEEP the project. Please, do not modify this page.

The following discussion is closed: The consensus is clear to keep and that ta.wikinews has seen a significant increase in sustained contributions. I think without any significant activity here in almost a month a closure of keep is clear. Jamesofur 02:30, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This wiki is completely dead (see the recent changes log, no activity at all for at least a month). It hasn't had any content edits in the past month at all, mainly just bot maintenance. Only 31 pages created in its 2.5-year existence, including main page, spam pages, and categories. A spam target, some spam pages have been sitting around for a year, not being deleted. No community + no content + spam+ highly inactive = no wiki. Tempodivalse [☎] 14:36, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've made a local announcement as required: [1]Dferg (talk) 11:29, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Dferg, could you repeat that announcement in a more conspicuous place? The main page or, better, the banner over the whole place (the one used for things like the votation of the picture of the year or raising funds) should be fine. That announcement you left is in a rather hidden place for a place with so little activity. Thanks. Regards. -- 08:32, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I can put the anouncement in the main page but not on the sitenotice because I have not sysop access and I can't edit it. I'm going to move the announcement to the main page as you requested. Best regards, —Dferg (talk) 08:42, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Regards. -- 09:15, 1 July 2009 (UTC) I left this message in Tamil Wikipedia as well just in case. Regards. -- 09:27, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, but please not this is not a voting rather a discussion. Simple votes will be ignored :) Best regards, —Dferg (talk) 09:39, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support closure

  1. Support - This wiki is inactive. There is no reason to keep this wiki open. Barras 09:31, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Support - per statistic page. —Dferg (talk) 12:56, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Ravidreams' argument convinced me —Dferg (talk) 14:01, 1 July 2009 (UTC) [reply]
Support per Tempodivalse; inactive project. –Juliancolton | Talk 21:05, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Support per Tempodivalse. Bogorm 07:11, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Support in last 30 days only one new userpage was created and one interwiki change. Only 30 content pages so far.—Bencmq 07:00, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Support closure as project is inactive. This is a particular problem for the Wikinews projects because news articles need to be written and checked in a short time frame and this isn't going to happen if there is hardly anyone contributing. Adambro 10:38, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Strong Support: No real content at all and no community. Languages from developing countries have a very small active wiki community and it would be great if those communities concentrate their efforts on a few wiki projects and consolidate their position. கோபி 17:29, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Strong Support: Not much content and the present wiki work needs much more attention before taking up other things-- 21:52, 1 July 2009 (UTC) Please log in to vote. -- 08:29, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Strong Support: The project had been inactive for a long time. There seems to some activity, motivated by this proposal request. But for how long will it be sustained ? As said by Adambro above, maintaining wikinews with very few volunteers is difficult. There are just 40 Pages, out of which some are spam and most others dont have any source. If people can write wikinews articles, without sources, that would be a disaster. There must be some approval system to publish articles. With a very low user involvement its just not possible. '
Given, that the user community of the Main Wikipedia project is itself very small for Languages like these. It would be better to develop the user community in the main projects such as Wikipedia and Wiktionary, before spilling the resources to develop the auxiliary projects as suggest above.
Again I repeat, may be for a few weeks, after this proposal, there may be some induced activity. The main question is, whether it is possible to sustain the contributions over a long time. My opinion is that, Its just not possible to sustain contributions by the same small user community in all the projects. If it will be abandoned again, there is no point in having it.
Given that the project will be imported to the Incubator. I suppose it can be revived, when there are enough users to run the project Vinodh.vinodh 19:03, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Support closure of project as inactive. Razorflame 07:27, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Support per discussion. Ali Rana 13:02, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose closure

  1. Strong Oppose. I accept that the activity at Tamil Wikinews at the moment is less. But this isn't a reason good enough to close it. Languages from developing countries have a very small active community whose energy are initially spent in bigger projects like wikipedia and wiktionary. They should be granted more time to be evaluated. Once we develop the bigger projects, we feel the need for the supporting projects and move on to them. Even Tamil Wikipedia and Wiktionary had a very dormant phase for first two years of operation. Now Tamil Wiktionary is one of the Top 15 wiktionaries in the world. Tamil Wikipedia leads Indian language wikis in many fronts. This is a proof that we have a very passionate and capable language community for wiki projects. The World Tamils are passing through a historic moment due to the Civil War situation in SriLanka. And we feel the need now more than ever for documenting news and quotes regarding this. We assure to show more activity and progress in these projects in the coming days. I request you to strongly consider this situation and keep the project open. Thank you--Ravidreams 11:08, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Strong Oppose You are taking these arbitrary decisions without consulting or informing Tamil Wikimedia community. This is an abomination to the wiki processes. It is true, Tamil wiki projects such as Wikiquote, and Wikinews have very low activity at the moment. However, we are in process of introducing the Tamil wiki projects to a wider audience. We completed four work shops, and several talks. So, we expect greater activity in the future. If we have to go thorough the hell of a long process to activate these projects again. That does not help us any bit. --Natkeeran 13:58, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Strong Oppose: It is true that the Tamil Wikimedia projects are less active at the moment except for Wikipedia and Wktionary. How ever Tamil wikipedia community in India is currently doing out reaching programs. One can expect grater flow of Tamil speaking users to wikimedia. Further in Sri Lanka Civil war has just over and normality is slowly returning to the Island so we can expect more tamil users as well. So we can expect greater activities in this wiki soon. --Trengarasu 00:34, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Strong Oppose - Developing country wiki's always take some time for pick up. Now only Tamil Nadu people are hearing lot about Wiki in media outlets. so soon we can expect more activity. Closing the project is not a wise decision. --Kurumban 14:20, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Strong Oppose - I agree with Ravi, Natkeeran, Kurumban, and Trengarasu. For example, Tamil Wiktionary picked up pace in the last one and a half years. There are few very active members in Tamil Wiktionary. We expect the same may happen with this project as well, as we are reaching the mass through various media.--Sivakumar 19:15, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Strong Oppose - It is true that the current activities at Tamil Wikinews is less. People have spent time in creating and contributing to this project. If there is no activity for a period do we need to close a project? I don't see any logic behind it. By closing this project you are sending a strong message to all the wiki project contributors that their valuable time invested in these projects could go in vain any time. These projects are not only for contributors and editors. It is mainly for common public. They can come any time to view and get benefit out of it. Currently there are attempts to popularize all Tamil wiki projects. We are carrying out campaigns to attract more people to contribute. If the project is closed it will negatively affect all efforts towards this. Mayooranathan 05:53, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Strong Oppose - I understand and agree the present state of activity is very insignificant. But a closure is not the right approach for wiki community. As Mayooranathan points out it brings to nought the efforts put forward by a budding community. It will be a dampener for any prospective user. As Tamil computing itself has grown recently, the user community is slowing shifting from English to Tamil. The user community in tamil wikipeadia is showing up recently due to the various campaigns conducted recently.I hope the wikipeadia may encourage intense more activity through incentives and competition among various wikimedia projects. Closure is a negative approach and I recommend positive signals for development and survival of wikimedia.Rsmn 08:38, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Oppose If you notice the data and charts in the paper cited by Ravi above, we've shown how Tamil Wikipedia has shown good organic growth. With the recent outreach activities, mentions in the press, increase in broadband penetration in India and Sri Lanka, inorganic growth can be expected to be at a good rate. -- Sundar 13:37, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  9. oppose Cumulus 14:01, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  10. Strong Oppose - I "understand" the need to review this project, but a decision to close is pretty drastic and very premature, in my view. I fully appreciate the facts that the activity had been low, but even the Tamil Wikipedia and Tamil Wiktionary had experienced similar stages in their development when they were started. Now, Tamil Wikipedia is one of the leading Indian subcontinental language Wikipedias (taking into considerations all the criteria for quality), and Wiktionary is among the top 15 in the world. Tamil is spoken by 66 million people as their native language and according to a 2001 survey, there were 1,863 newspapers published in Tamil, of which 353 were dailies. Although commercial Tamil newsmedia is vibrant, serving some 66 million people, they do not reflect the broad spectrum of news (science, art, business, industrial, technological) but mostly focus on politics and cinema (movies). Many of us have been planning to give impetus to a more broad-based spectrum of news in Tamil. Some of the problems pointed out here about Wikinews are due to teething problems and I request the admins to be considerate and give bit more time before taking any drastic decisions like closing. Thanks for your considerations.--செல்வா 02:13, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  11. oppose. Tamil Wikipedia and its allied projects are in a growing phase now. Given more time wiki news will Definitely grow to the maximum--Karthickbala 12:09, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  14. Oppose Per reasons above. And also, the usage of computers and internet is less (bellow 10%) among Tamil people and their govt. they are now begin to practicing the usage. My seniors are in constructive efforts. Kindly, encourage them. I think we Wikipeadians are educators not arbitrators. so, consider their constructions. தகவலுழவன் 02:00, 12 September 2009 (UTC){தொடர்புக்கு..}[reply]

  21. Oppose - project is becoming active, one user though, but still needs some chance, review of this proposal is always possible if needed. --Dalibor Bosits © 12:47, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  22. Oppose. Right now, tamil Wikinews has more articles than languages like turkish, bosnian and bulgarian; and the activity is bigger than the activity of Wikinews projects in chinese, swedish and hebrew. Tamil Wikinews is running and Serbian Wikinews is Bot-news, we're trying to close the wrong project. ×α£đes 23:08, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  23. Oppose - I previously supported the closure but I'm glad to see the project is growing more and more. —Dferg|disputatio 21:09, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Since this discussion started, as noted by Vinodh, activity on ta:n has grown significantly, and they are in the process of electing their first sysop. Whether keeping the site or moving it to the incubator makes more sense, it is worth waiting to see the result of this recent activity -- especially since the people taking part in it are strongly in support of keeping their own site up. (A move to/from the Incubator takes some effort, and is not fun.) -- sj | translate | + 21:01, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
