Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Koyraboro Senni Songhay

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.

    This proposal is on hold:

Waiting for more contributors to start adding content to the test project. Please contribute at incubator:Wp/ses! StevenJ81 (talk) 15:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ses (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Koyraboro Senni Songhay Language name in English
Language name soŋay Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q35655 - item has currently the following values: Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikipediya "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-ses.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Africa/Bamako "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

[edit]

The Wikipedia initiative in the “ses“ Songhay (Songhai) language is a longstanding project to mobilize high school, college students as well as teachers and community mentors in producing texts, maps, pictures, moving images documenting, in the first place, a linguistic and cultural region in which Songhay is spoken and taught, as language of instruction in primary education and subject in secondary school and higher education. The preparatory phase saw the parallel effort to localize translatewiki and enroll contributors and potential recruiters, at different schooling levels as well as within the community, in the home region and across its sizable diaspora. At this stage, there is a number of persons who declared their interest in writing articles or finding other volunteers to do so. From their questions and suggestions, as well as guidelines in Wikimedia documents, a user-friendly guide is being developed and will be soon available in Songhay, French, English and Arabic. The contributors will have online support through the platform www.songhay.org, which combines basic Songhay-French / French-Songhay dictionaries, information, help and download links for localized interfaces available in Songhay, namely Firefox, instructions to tools like an Android keyboard and an online input tool for a Songhay-wide character set, a library of full-length publications in the "ses" varieties and other Songhay idioms, and a small-size, evolving encyclopedia of traditional and local knowledge.

In this regard, the Wikipedia project is the culmination of successive initiatives in localization, database building and content production designed to provide the target language with the necessary tools to survive and even thrive in the multilingual cyberspace. These span the last fifteen years. Thus it emphasizes the mobilization of ordinary people within the language community to produce efficient tools and relevant content, through collaboration with other communities, especially active and creative teams with a track record in generating strong human-language infrastructure for other small or less-resourced languages. An active Wikipedia site will be a stimulating meeting point for young and adult volunteers who have now broader access to mobile internet and smart devices even in remote areas than at the initial conception of the project five years or so ago. They will engage in creating and sustaining a strong knowledge base that could also become an invaluable resource for underresourced schools and literacy centers in the vast region in which the language is spoken and actively used in formal schooling, literacy and vocational training. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Amire80 (talk), posting on behalf of Gazuma (talk) for technical reasons, 21:36, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]

Will probably be eligible. Just keep creating content here for another month or so and I will be able to mark it that way. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:03, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Gazuma and Amire80: I'd like to make this eligible. But if no one adds any more content to the test, it will probably be closed as stale. Please start creating content. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
