Requests for new languages/Wikipedia N'Ko

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code nqo (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name N'Ko Language name in English
Language name ߒߞߏ Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q18546266 - item has currently the following values: Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.

Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name ߥߞߌߔߘߋߞߎ "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace ߥߞߌߔߘߋߞߎ usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace ߥߞߌߔߘߋߞߎ ߢߊߝߐߞߣߍ "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-nqo.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Africa/Conakry "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Proposal[edit]

N'Ko language is one of the most spoken language in West Africa by Manding people with different naming as Malinke in Guinea, Bambara in Mali and Jula in Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso. It is being taught in schools particularly in Upper Guinea region and in some region of Mali. Last year, Guinea government adopted N'ko writing system as the literacy alphabet. Also taught in higher education like Koffi Annan University language department in Guinea and in some foreign universities like Harvard African Languages Department, İNALCO in France. Recently we have formed a Wikimedia projects user group through social media which is willingly ready to contribute editing the most reliable contents in N'Ko Wikipedia incubator. We are requesting the committee to create our domain name in order to keep motivating the community. N'Ko is the literacy language for Manding people. https://incubator.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wp/nqo/%DF%93%DF%8F%DF%AC%DF%9F%DF%8F%DF%B2%DF%AC%DF%98%DF%8A&redirectfrom=infopage&setlang=nqo

Discussion[edit]

Question: Are languages that have second language only status allowed Wikimedia projects since Pali has is own Wikimedia project? --47.156.0.180 23:37, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

See the English Wikipedia article. It is a modern standardized koiné, comparable to Modern Standard Arabic, not to Pali. It's used for publishing books and newspapers, and for teaching literacy in schools, so it makes a lot of sense to have a Wikipedia in it. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:57, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like Amire is suggesting to approve this, as per [1]? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 09:30, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I recommend to approve this. The activity is good, and it was approved by an expert. No-one in the Language Committee objected. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:57, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Amire80: I sent you a private email message to obtain some clarification. Thanks. Axel xadolik (talk) 16:10, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
