Proposal summary
Please read the handbook for requesters for help using this template correctly.
  • Number of speakers: 2200
  • Locations spoken: Saterland in Western Oldenburg, Germany
  • Related languages: West Frisian (not mutually understandable)

Comment: This request was done before but is was moved since there was no native speaker support. In the mean time, the test wiki has grown rapidly and what is more important: there is a native speaker who has contibuted: incubator:User:Brokesales, who edited mostly under her IP number. This user is known to be a prominent Sater Frisian author.
Steinbach (formerly Caesarion) 02:04, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  5. Support Roel van Dijk: It's a language which deserves support!
  6. Support Irwen de Boer: This is an official recognized language, there are a lot of people in and outside the Saterland to support this project. Since the Saterfrisian has already 270 articles, proves that this language is important enough to become an official wikipedia.

Oppose/Kontra[edit]

  1. Oppose strongly. Only spoken by a few thousand people or less. Jeroenvrp 17:24, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • In my opinion the most important thing is the capacity to make a Wikipedia. In this respect one has to realize, that the Saterfrisian test-Wikipedia is already larger than over 100 of the Wikipedias recognized up to now. --Pyt 21:39, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Strong Oppose, hell why dont we have a WikiCockney? I mean, how many people actually speak this language? I agree with the fact there is only native speaker that will work in this.. He will never have any problem with the WP:PA or admins though :))Baristarim 00:38, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Your comparision with London slang is patent nonsense. Sater Frisian is a deeply rooted vernacular language, not a slang, and very, very distinct from everything spoken around it (including other Frisian languages). Moreover, the native speaker, will surely not be the only one to bid for adminship, so that argument can be discarded at once. At least Pyt and I will take the same duty. Third, as I said before, more native speakers are certainly to join, since Brokesales will tell others about it in this close community. And last but not least: KEEP THIS DISCUSSION BILINGUAL (and if you don't speak German, just try it!)!!

  1. I don't know, if one native speaker an few fans and scientists are enough for running an wikipedia. Wouldn't it make more sense to start in private project (the MediaWiki software is open source), where you don't have to follow the strict criteria of Wikipedia? There we could collect more than just encyclopedian texts. Don't get me wrong, I'm a strong supporter of this language but I'm not sure, if a very small stq-Wikipedia would help this small language. I work for a multilingual Internet-Projekt (thanks tp Pyt) and I am open to discuss an connection between this and a "Saterfrisian Wiki" to concentrate the saterfrisian strengths. In the close community of the Saterland Frisians, once one of them has started contributing, more of them will follow. That's at least what we expect. Steinbach (formerly Caesarion) 09:36, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, the important factor is, that every Wikipedia is different, even when stricly keeping to the standard of objectivity. This is because every author approaches reality from a different point of view, which means that an article in a certain language may contain information different from the corresponding article in another language. I am rather certain, that the Saterfrisian Test-Wikipedia already contains information that can be found in no other Wikipedia, information much of which not would have reached the Wikipedia-community otherwise. --Pyt 11:41, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
