Requests for new languages/Wikiquote Gorontalo

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code gor (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Gorontalo Language name in English
Language name Hulontalo Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q2501174 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikilumadu "Wikiquote" in your language
Project namespace Wikilumadu usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Lo'iya Wikilumadu "Wikiquote talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikiquote-logo-gor.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Makassar "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

The Gorontalo language, or in the local dialect, the Bahasa Hulontalo, is a family of Austronesian languages spoken in the Gorontalo area, on the northern peninsula of Sulawesi island. It has fewer and fewer speakers. In 2015, it was estimated that there were about 1,000,000 active speakers of the Gorontalo language.

In 2018, the Gorontalo Wikipedia was released. While organising writing training on Wikipedia, we found that many of the young speakers of the Gorontalo language did not correctly manage the language, and it was very difficult to build sentences to create articles.

This encouraged us to introduce the Gorontalo Wiktionary, which contains the root words and their derivatives and examples of their use in a sentence. It has also been divided into various word classes to make it easier to search for them. Thus, speakers still in the learning stage can understand it and make sentences to compile articles.

Wikiquote is the final missing piece to Gorontalo's Wikipedia and Wiktionary. With Wikiquote, Gorontalo speakers can access valuable quotes from prominent individuals worldwide.

Gorontalo also recognises the local proverb, lumadu, which contains advice, proverbs, similes and pieces of advice. Getting all of these memorised on the Wikiquote would be excellent.

Menarik, saya mendukung wikiquote untuk hulontalo, barangkali ini akan jadi upaya aktif melahirkan penutur Bahasa Gorontalo. MSDunggu (talk) 15:25, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

Hello! Langcom intends to approve the project. Please check if all the settings in the table at the top of the page are correct. - Please note that a member of Langcom has noticed some pages are mixed with single sentences of Bahasa Indonesia, e.g. incubator:Wq/gor/Adhan_Dambea and incubator:Wq/gor/Adat_penghulu_berpadang_luas,_beralam_lapang. Maybe you can have an eye on this issue and fix it. --MF-W 11:56, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @MF-Warburg, thank you for leaving a message here.
The table above has been filled in correctly. We are just waiting for the logo design to be completed and will be uploaded soon.
For some pages that still contain Indonesian, we will edit them again soon, so we suspect that patrols will be activated to find pages that still need to be translated.
Regards. -- Marwan Mohamad (talk) 14:04, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
