Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Melanau

Melanau Wiktionary[edit]

submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been rejected.
While this request has technically been rejected, in reality this is a request that has been sitting open or on hold for a long time with little evidence of a community coming together to build a project. If a community comes together in the future and makes a new request, LangCom would consider that new request without prejudice.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Only content that was ever added here was a single page in English. We will be happy to entertain a new request if and when a community shows an active interest in working on this. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:27, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code mel (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Melanau Language name in English

Settings
Project name "Wiktionary" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wiktionary talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings

Default project timezone Continent/City "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set

Proposal[edit]

  • Population: 113,000 in Sarawak (2000 census)
  • Total Speakers: c.a.30 000 Source: Wikipedia Melanau
  • Location spoken: Sarawak 11th Division, Rejang delta coastal area to Balingian River. Also in Brunei.

The Melanau are considered among the earliest settlers in Sarawak. The name Melanau was not used by the Melanau to refer to themselves until recently. They call themselves a-likou meaning ‘people of the river’. Legend has it that the name Melanau was given by one of the Sultans of Brunei to the inhabitants of the coastal swamp flats and riverbanks of central Sarawak.

The Melanau live in a low-lying swampy plain covered by dense tropical forest in the coastal region of Sarawak. They are mostly located in and near the towns of Mukah, Matu, Daro, Dalat, Bintulu, Kanowit, and Sibu.

Because of their group affiliation, Melanau derive their identities through people such as parents, friends, relatives, and teachers. The self is a part of the community, the family, the clan, the village, and the bureaucracy. A person’s family is the primary unit that defines Melanau roles, responsibilities, and status in the community.

The Melanau language consists of various dialects. However, most of Melanau people use the dialect from the Mukah area to communicate with those from other dialects.

Discussion[edit]

Arguments in favour[edit]

  • The Melanau Wictionary is to gather as much as possible melanau word from various dialects of the central melanau. There are only circa 30 000 melanau who can speak the language and sadly the numbers are decreasing each year. One of the main reason is some melanaus have taken their language for granted and there are melanau parents who refuse or hesitate to teach their children the language anymore.
  • Fortunately there are many growing interest among the younger generation of melanaus trying to trace back their roots and learn the language. However there are limited resource about the language in the internet. Hence I believe that Wictionary is the best medium to gather as much as possible melanau vocabularies for future refference and studies.
