Criticism[edit]

Sorry to have to start the talk page with this, but I think the changed logo isn't great from an internationalisation perspective. The W is very integrated into the shape, meaning it would be very hard to replace it with an equivalent character in another script or language. Additionally, it's not at all "abstracted" (like in the #3), it's very overtly a W, meaning it's hard to argue that the shape itself is the logo and wouldn't be translated.

(Other issues: Assuming the intention is basically to shrink the image for the favicon, the lambda becomes basically completely invisible at small sizes: . Additionally, (I know this is completely subjective, and maybe isn't fair to say at this point), I kind of find the logo itself to be sort of ... ugly? Relative to any of the top 3, all of which were pretty okay. :/ Just my opinion, please don't assume this is reflective of broader opinion.)

I'm disappointed to hear about the legal issues. In retrospect, the system of having Legal give notes about potential issues in advance of the vote, like we had in the naming contest, might have been helpful here. --Yair rand (talk) 17:37, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delayed response.
Re: Internationalization of the logo/favicon, I don't believe we do this for any projects, e.g. the w:ru: Wikipedia has the standard "W" as a favicon.
Re: Favicon design, yup, as mentioned in the page we intended to make a special version for this, like the other projects do. This is now done, and at File:Wikifunctions-favicon-32.png.
Re: Legal notes ahead of time, yes it would be preferable to have the full legal review be before hand, but that would be prohibitively time-consuming and expensive - that's partly what took months for us to finalize this logo.
Hope that helps. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:24, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
