Models encouraging the use free and open software and open formats[edit]

I think this is a fantastic work, and it can facilitate model use and reuse.

At the moment, though, the page encourages only the use of proprietary software, and it does not mention the importance of respecting privacy and confidential data (which can not be respected if people use proprietary software such as Google Presentations, Google Doc, Figma, Canva, etc.…), open and standard formats (a requirement for open data and content), or data ownership (which is not assured with proprietary software).

Making models available for free and open software and in open formats would be really important. For example, the presentation model can be shared on Nextcloud and made available for LibreOffice. Social media should include the Fediverse, and content should be editable also on Gimp. To give some examples.

We need as a community to encourage openness in all our activities (which is the reason of our existence), sustainable choices (which are not the ones based on proprietary software) and, at least, we need to provide options (at the moment there are no open alternatives even if they exist). iopensa (talk) 09:45, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Iolanda,
Thank you so much for stopping by and checking out the available brand resources. Many of the resources on the brand portal came from community requests (you can read more about this in our previous bi-annual updates) and as part of those requests, we asked the affiliate or requesting community about their tool/software preference and provided resources using the tools they are already using to make it easier for them and other community members to navigate and use. That said, we still should have exerted more effort to provide multiple options including open-source software options when possible. We have taken this note for consideration when creating future updates to the portal if there was enough capacity for creating different options. If you would like to point us to certain tools that your affiliate would like to use on open-source platforms, please let us know so that we can prioritize the work for future updates. We usually do the bi-annual updates around March-April and October-November each year and we are going to start the work on the next update in July 2024. Would you like to have a call where we can discuss ways to implement your suggestions? Please let me know. Ideally, we are looking forward to building a network of designers, developers and editors to help create more open source resources. Thank you again for sharing those valuable notes with us and we look forward to continuing to hear from you. --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 12:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
