This is very unfriendly manual. Can somebody rewrite it into a how-to prose? --Piotrus 19:12, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Links for articles with question marks in the article name do not work[edit]

If you do a search that results in an article name with a question mark in it, the URL for that article does not work. The URL contains a question mark that should instead be encoded in the catscan output as "%3F". Jonesey95 (talk) 23:59, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is a powerful tool, but mostly unusable because the manual should have real examples demonstrating what should be selected to go where to do what[edit]

Hi. I have used this tool on occasion and it is a very powerful tool which can give valuable results. I have used it on occasion and was pleased by the results. But I also failed to use this tool on a number of occasions because I could not understand clearly what should be selected from what, inserted where, to do what. I guess very few people use this tool because of this reason. I understand that the tool is being rewritten, and greatly appreciate the effort. I want to urge the tool coders, or someone else who knows how to tame this beast, to take up the time and write a manual with real examples on each slot showing with screenshots what should be selected from what data to do what. This should make the effort of recoding this tool much more worthwhile and greatly increase the value of this tool. Thanks.OrangesRyellow (talk) 13:08, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tried using it again today to find all pages with the template Template:WikiProject UK geography. Could not make it work despite several attempts.OrangesRyellow (talk) 09:19, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I edited the "manual" considerably, bringing it up to this version. I added two examples, including implementing your intended search. Your search yields 22,000 articles. Hope this helps! --Doncram (talk) 11:49, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sort[edit]

Powerful tool. Requested to add the ability to sort by category. Thank you. Игорь Темиров (talk) 04:49, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Older version?[edit]

CatScan is an awesome tool. But at the time when it is being rewritten it is unavailable to do anything we were used to. Is anywhere else running any older and working version separately? And if not, when do you plan CatScan to make work (at least partially)? --Dvorapa (talk) 20:13, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Update: from today it is partially working, but it would be still better to keep the old working version somewhere. --Dvorapa (talk) 17:11, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the old version, really need to use the at least option. --Traveler100 (talk) 19:32, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Syntax examples would go a long way[edit]

The manual doesn't give clear examples of how free-form conditions should be defined; for example, under Has any of these templates, I had to experiment with {{medicine-stub}}, medicine-stub, and Medicine stubs before figuring out the second option was correct. The strikeouts are also distracting. Would it be possible to provide a simplified version of this while the full-feature version is under construction? Map of selected articles[edit]

Great tool! A very helpful enhancement would be to make it easy to make a map based on the `coord` templates in the selected articles. You could either produce data to send to your-favorite-mapping-application, or just produce e.g. a new "format" called "coords" which just contains the coords from each selected table. Then we could take that to our own mapping service of choice.

E.g. then we could take a geographic category and map all the articles in the category, etc.

Allowing this to work from a list article, e.g. List of bogs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, by similarly visiting all the listed articles, would also be cool. Nealmcb (talk) 01:30, 23 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Error in results?[edit]

When you try

Language: commons
Project: wikimedia
Namespaces: File
Categories:
  Art
  Sculptures‎

it seems not to work. For example, File:"Class photograph, "The Studio for Painting and Sculpture of the Cultural Committee in Tel Aviv".jpg".jpg is in both categories, but not shown --MartinThoma (talk) 12:59, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
