Bug report (flickering diagrams in Chrome / Firefox)

Hi, I experience a problem with the Pageview analysis tool. I first had the problem when accessing this site https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=de.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-20&pages=Porter_Ricks. The diagram is flickering / vibrating in constant high speed, as if it is constantly reloading. As soon as I check one of the boxes above the diagram, e.g. "Show values" or "logarithmic scale" the site is shown correct, even if I untick the box again. After reloading the site, the problem appears again. I use Google Chrome (Version 61.0.3163.91, 64-Bit) @ Windows 7 SP1. The problem also appears in Mozilla Firefox, but not in Internet Explorer. I use the Pageview analysis tool since years in Mozilla but never had that problem until last week. Note: I installed a new graphic card last week but hadn't any issues on other websites, so I assume this is not an hardware issue. Best regards, --NiTenIchiRyu (talk) 15:45, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

I thought this issue was fixed... guess not :( It's your browser/monitor size that's causing this. My bet is if you reduce the width of the browser window, the flickering will go away. I will try to look into this more, but unfortunately it's not easy as I do not own a Windows device. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 14:49, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, reducing the browser window's width stopped the flickering. Same with checking a box, etc. Thanks for looking into the issue. Best regards, --NiTenIchiRyu (talk) 15:37, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

problem in mass view

I got stuck with mass view including subcategories, if the interconnection between categories produces too many datasets (in my case more than 15,000 pages). Is it possible to exclude some subcategories? in my case the cathegory for astronomy includes earth, but then earth is of course interconnected to a very wide field of countries and people. If I could exclude a subcategory it would help. Kipala (talk) 10:44, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

@Kipala: First, apologies for the late reply! And I apologize yet again to say that unfortunately you cannot exclude any subcategories. One workaround here might be to first create a PagePile, then plug that into Massviews (with "PagePile" as the source). Or, if you are able to easily fetch the pages, put them all on one wiki page and go off of that, using "Wikilinks" as the source in Massviews. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 16:00, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

"Unique editors" column

In my opinion, this long title (and too wide column) could be shorten to simply Editors, which itself is clear enough. Russian translation Уникальные редакторы is not good, and is too bulky; Редакторы would be quite sufficient.
AK.from.dxdy (talk) 08:56, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

You're probably right. Hopefully it is safe for people to assume "Editors" means unique editors. I will shorten it as you suggest. Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 16:02, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

Bug report

The statistics graphs do not work with French articles, as above with the IP address. 2A01:CB14:1E0:9900:71E0:45F7:707E:E979 12:40, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Are you also using IE 11? Does it work in another browser or device? Does it work for projects other than French Wikipedia (e.g. [1])? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 14:46, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF):. Yes I use IE11 (with windows 8). No, it does not work for the English Wikipedia. In fact, it's weird, I saw it work once in French a few days ago, and that's all. 2A01:CB14:1E0:9900:C5AB:ED6C:7EDD:CC0A 08:30, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF):. I finally found the solution. I must activate the option Navigation InPrivate (Internet Explorer 11) to see correctly the bars. A small inconvenience ! 2A01:CB14:1E0:9900:E5C9:1A65:5487:E1DB 12:50, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
In that case you probably have an extension that's blocking access to the API that Pageviews Analysis uses. My guess is that when you use the InPrivate option, it is disabling all of your extensions. So I would check if you have any privacy-related extensions, and make sure wikipedia.org and wikimedia.org are whitelisted. At any rate, glad you found a workaround! Redirect views stalling

Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T179113

In the last couple of days about half the time generating a redirect view just stalls. It may be more of a problem for articles with many redirects. Try the redirect view links in my list of 25 articles at the top of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Penbat - some stall for me.--Penbat (talk) 12:21, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

Still happening. --Penbat (talk) 07:50, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
This appears to be a regression with the Pageviews API itself. I've filed a bug at phab:T179113. It is possible to add a workaround in Pageviews Analysis, which I'm looking into now. Thanks for the report MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:14, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
@Penbat: This should be fixed now. You may need to clear your browser cache for it to take effect. Let me know if anymore issues! Just FYI, phab:T179113 is the ticket for the issue with the API itself, which is still unresolved, but the Pageviews/RedirectViews tool should be functional now. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 16:32, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Userviews

I'm can't see the views of the pages that I've created because the API never charge, appearing a message saying: "Criando conjunto de dados" (in portuguese). Mr. Fulano! Talk 18:01, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

Issue with raw dumps

Pageview Problem: counts not understandable: Example: date=2017-10-01, word=Klebrige_Robinie, search count=5. However in the data are 4 findings: pageviews-20171001-060000.gz: de.m Klebrige_Robinie 1 0 pageviews-20171001-120000.gz, de Klebrige_Robinie 1 0 pageviews-20171001-160000.gz, de.m Klebrige_Robinie 1 0 pageviews-20171001-200000.gz, de Klebrige_Robinie 1 0

Why is there a difference? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 2a02:810d:30c0:1cbc:c017:df7e:243f:242b (talk) 23:18, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

This sounds like an issue with the raw dumps, not the Pageviews Analysis application, which uses the API. You might try asking at Research:Page view or the contacting the Analytics team MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 06:48, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Time Zone

Hi. Which time zone are the reports based on? By this I mean, if I am looking at Nov 1 traffic and trying to understand what caused a spike in traffic, it is useful to know if I need to be looking at news from Oct 31 or Nov 1 depending on the primary country of that actual page. Thanks — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.179.247.80 (talk) 15:18, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

It should be always in UTC, since that's how it is stored in the API MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:34, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

Peak alert for Pageviews

With certain articles, it would be very helpful to have an automatic peak alert if there occur exceptional peaks as it just happened with Rebekah Mercer.[2] I imagine a bot that can be told to watch the pageviews of selected articles. In the example that inspired me there was an announcement of the father (Robert Mercer) that he is going to sell his shares of Breitbart News to his daughters. Since I have >200 pages on my watchlist and incidents like this one are not highlighted in German media, it is only by chance or by hints from friends that I register such peaks and can find out the reason. --Klaus Frisch (talk) 12:22, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

This is a fine idea, but indeed this is a job for a bot or service, not Pageviews Analysis. I would recommend making a request at en:WP:BOTREQ. However since you want it to go off of your watchlist, this may be better fit as a Toolforge service, that will email or post on your talk when the configured pageviews threshold is hit. If I ever have some free time I might look into this! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:30, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
@Klaus Frisch: This has been proposed in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey! Your input is invited at 2017 Community Wishlist Survey/Watchlists/Traffic watchlist. The voting phase will start on November 27. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping! I have never been in this Meta realm before. Do I get it right that my proposal has been (independently?) put on the way and that I don't have to bother anymore? If you think instead that my opinion could be of help, give me another ping. --Klaus Frisch (talk) 20:07, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
@Klaus Frisch: I just wanted to make you aware of it :) If you have any input you'd like to add, feel free to comment in the discussion. Starting November 27, we invite you to participate in the voting phase. In the meantime, if you have any other great ideas like this one, don't hesitate to create a proposal of your own! More info at 2017 Community Wishlist Survey#What happens during the proposal phase?. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:12, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Massviews hangs without finishing for Commons

Massviews is a great tool for finding images to put into Commons galleries!

Recently, it seems to hang consistently when given different Commons categories. For example, try Massviews on Commons:Category:Long Valley Caldera for the month of October 2017. It doesn't finish (for me) either with or without "Include all subcategories" checked. ---Hike395 (talk)

@Hike395: This is because of phab:T179113. I was able to add a workaround though, so it should be finishing for you now MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 06:43, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): OK, I cleared my cache in Firefox and now it seems to work. Thanks for the fix and sorry for the bother. ---Hike395 (talk) 08:54, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Inflated Stats until May 2017

Hi We've used the wmflabs tool to look at wiki page impressions from mobile users from the last 2 years. From Dec 2015 to May 2017 we're showing more page impressions that booking.com, which I'd love to be accurate and true but I'm doubtful! The same comparison graph on desktop looks fine incidently.

Could you offer any feedback as to why these stats look so inflated for this date range?

Jerome J. Workman Jr - pageviews deleted prior to 10/28/17?

All page views prior to 10/28/17 are deleted? These page views are not available when using any OS or browsers?(75.112.191.2 20:19, 23 November 2017 (UTC))

I'm going to need more information. Can you provide a link? What probably happened was that the page was moved to a new location, so you'll have to look up the old title to get the old pageviews. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:20, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Range selection?

It would be nice to see the stats for month A to month B in the topviews tool, or at least for an entire year. 187.66.33.77 19:40, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

If you talk about "Topviews", custom date ranges are no longer supported. Lofhi (talk) 17:00, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
Indeed this functionality has been removed, because we currently don't have accurate data for arbitrary ranges. The API behind the tool only offers per-day and per-month stats. The Analytics team will probably compile the most-viewed pages for all of 2017 like they did last year, but I think they may only do this for the English Wikipedia. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:18, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Why cat and dog?

Having the default search of cat and dog means needing 2 extra clicks (and pageload) every time the page is opened. Can't we display the example only at first access? --Ita140188 (talk) 11:33, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

This is to illustrate the comparison capabilities. You can use the "Clear" link at the top-right to reset it, which will also put focus in the search field. That brings it down to one click, hopefully that's satisfactory? Having no default following initial access isn't a bad idea, but this is how it used to be for projects other than en.wikipedia, and some people asked why there was no default. So now it queries Wikidata to get the corresponding pages for Cat and Dog, or show the Main Page if none exists. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:16, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Very strange spike in views in several articles

A number of low-profile articles about places in the Middle East started receiving huge increase in views this year: Pageviews Analysis (Up to 50,000+ each). If you check 'Agent' parameter on the left, you'll see that until June 9 it was "Spider", and then "User". Views for some of those are almost identical day-by-day, and it stops and starts randomly. It's 100% unnatural. What can explain this? --Triggerhippie4 (talk) 14:31, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

I have also had odd spikes such as this one - https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-30&pages=Disengaging_from_an_abuser_using_the_no_contact_rule_or_grey_rock_method It looks genuine to me on the face of it but on the other hand you would have thought if there was some sudden frenetic interest by a reader or group of readers they might have commented on the talk page or edited the article to improve it. I guess the most likely explanation is that the Wiki article was linked to from a popular online newspaper article which only had a shelf-life of a few days for most readers. --Penbat (talk) 09:07, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
No, it's not natural, as I explained here: en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Very strange spike in views in several articles. --Triggerhippie4 (talk) 16:10, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Redirect stats hanging again

In most cases redirect stats are again hanging. Try the redirect stats for my top 25 list at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Penbat --Penbat (talk) 09:01, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Can you give me a specific link? I try several of the ones you have listed and they all worked. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 16:39, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes they all work fine for me now. Strange. I will you give you a shout if it seems to go wrong again.--Penbat (talk) 18:42, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Topviews bug report - Timeout at "View more" when 900 rows are already displayed and "View mobile percent" box is checked

As the subject says there is a timeout when I click on "View more" after having 900 rows displayed. This happens for all projects and all months I have tested, but ONLY when the "View mobile percent" box is checked. When the box is unchecked the tenth, and last, page is displayed without any problem except that the last row number is 997 (or something other than 1000) and there is no "View more" link at the end. I guess it is i a built in limit to have only 1000 pages listed, but it seems to be a bug to timeout on the tenth and last page if "View mobile percent" box is checked.

Link to tool: https://tools.wmflabs.org/topviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&date=last-month&excludes= Web browser: Mozilla Firefox 57 (latest version) Operating System: Windows 10

Note: Two of the links to FAQ that you refer to, for Topviews and Langviews, are no good. They bring you to "404 Not found".

atj.wikipedia.org is not a valid project or is currently unsupported

Hello !

Wikimedia Canada worked on creating Wikipedias in Canadian aboriginal languages, and Atikamek language is one of them. Now, local institutions asked if we can get some stats, but I get the message "atj.wikipedia.org is not a valid project or is currently unsupported". But what I don't undertand is the language is in the API. Someone would know why atj is unsupported ? Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 15:29, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

@Benoit Rochon: Sorry about that! It should be fixed now [3]. See also Siteviews which gives pageviews for the project as a whole. Best — MusikAnimal talk 02:18, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal:: Thank you very much and thank you for your work on this tool. It is amazingly well done. Bravo ! Benoit Rochon (talk) 18:02, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
