About this page[edit]

My inspiration for this project is the Right to Information Act in India.

I know that various countries have freedom of information laws through which citizens can request information of the government. I especially like the way this happens in India, where newspapers routinely announce these requests and dramatize them as the people uncovering secrets. Even though newspapers in India can be sensational I appreciate the respect for the ideal of the democratic process, equality of citizens to make requests, the recognition of bureaucracy as a means to justice, and the overall excitement that gaining information can change the world for the better.

The Wikimedia community seems like a nation to me having a common culture, some shared assets, and a presence on the world stage. I feel that we Wikimedia community members have a right to information in matters concerning Wikimedia projects. Those concerns have always included internal matters such as the sharing of the funding which the Wikimedia Foundation collects on behalf or the Wikimedia community. Increasingly, the Wikimedia community is a stakeholder in what other organizations do, such as the extent to which tech companies like Google or Facebook use Wikimedia resources in the public commons. I recognize there is no mandate from any traditional government to obey the requests of the Wikimedia community, but as a matter of social order the Wikimedia community has a prominent place in society. The broader public will respect collective statements and requests from the Wikimedia community, and if we make a public request, then the stakes of answering it will be whether an organization wants a public image of either respecting or disrespecting the Wikimedia community. Reading the above, I am not clear on one thing. Are we talking about Wikipedia editors asking the WMF for information, or are we talking about Wikipedia editors asking [the broader public / government / other organizations] for information? --Guy Macon (talk) 21:33, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting issues[edit]

This section is for non-controversial formatting issues only -- adding links, fixing spelling and grammar issues, that sort of thing. --Guy Macon (talk) 21:28, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Has this effort been abandoned?[edit]

I haven't seen any discussion in a while. is "Wikimedia Right to Information" Yet Another Good Idea That Is Going Nowhere? --Guy Macon (talk) 05:04, 19 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
