Throwing one's hat[edit]

To throw one's hat into the ring is an expression that doesn't exist in the Dutch language. I have therefore replaced it in the Dutch translation (based on the English text) with "kandideren", which is a verb indicating that someone is a candidate. Dear Axpde, if this is a problem and you wish to use the expression, you may wish to replace "In deze verkiezing wil ook ik mij graag kandideren." with the literal translation "In deze verkiezing werp ook ik graag mijn hoed in de ring." Kind regards, Mathonius 23:38, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Although I'm a mathematician I perfectly know there is no exact translation possible in various cases. I'm pretty sure you did the best and AFAIC the text sounds ok to me :) a×pdeHello! 23:50, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Literal translation doesn't work either on Portuguese. I think it means that somebody entered on a competition.” Teles (T @ L C S) 03:55, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is, in the sense of "to make an application".
Every language has its own figurative expressions, some can be translated directly, some by meaning, some not at all ...
P.S., Teles, would you mind ... ;-) a×pdeHello! 09:01, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. By the way... what is the meaning of "IT sector"?” Teles (T @ L C S) 15:46, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, IT is the "new-German" abbreviation of "Information Technology" ;-) a×pdeHello! 19:00, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
