Suggestion[edit]

Hi, Johan. Don't you think that the expiry item should be advanced? IKhitron (talk) 17:56, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

IKhitron: I thought about this, and my reasoning behind not marking it as such was this: Setting it to a specific length is advanced. Knowing it can be done and bringing it up to discussion isn't necessarily technically advanced, and relevant for admins in general. Does that make sense? /Johan (WMF) (talk) 19:00, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For me, knowing what is "default block length" at all is advanced. IKhitron (talk) 19:24, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, it's a specific target audience. But it's not technically advanced, which is what it normally means, just that you do a specific kind of editing – which is true of a lot of the things we write about.
(Of course, I might be biased here, since I'm a vandal-fighter in my normal, volunteer Wikimedia life.) /Johan (WMF) (talk) 21:57, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, one should have an advanced technical knowledge just to understand it. What do you mean in nof technically advanced? Blick itself is very technical, in my oppinion. IKhitron (talk) 22:00, 1 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So here's my thinking: A lot of people who use it – and can use this information – don't understand the block function. They roughly know what an IP address is, and then they get a drop-down menu to pick a time from. That's about the technical knowledge required to block someone: using a menu. Actually understanding what happens from a technical perspective is more complicated, but a lot of people don't do that (and don't need to). /Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:29, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the people reading this item do not know what block are you talking about, or what menu you are talking about. I don't, and I teach students in university programming many years. IKhitron (talk) 16:34, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wait in block length do you mean blocking user time, not block length of intercomputer communication packet? I just saw the russion translation. Now I do understand why did you say it is not technical, but I never could understand what are you talking about from the English text. Translated differently, so it became understandable. IKhitron (talk) 21:57, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. I've clarified the English text. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:07, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It' fine now, thanks. IKhitron (talk) 12:17, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
