Accessibility[edit]

I’m aware that wiki-generated text is quite inherently inaccessible, but I’d still like to point out that links labelled “this update”, “here”, “read more”, etc. are completely unacceptable in current best practice (and have not been acceptable since about 10 years ago). These link labels simply shouldn’t be used because when a screen reader user requests a list of links they’ll get labels like “here” which are completely meaningless. I regularly fix "here" and "click here" links. Those should never appear in Tech News. It's one of my pet-peeves.
I'll try to be more aware of those related problems in the future. I do understand the screenreader issue. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 00:46, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Diffs[edit]

I’m wondering, what prefs and/or gadgets need to be enabled to see these legends and tooltips? I tried it on my home wiki and I’m seeing neither legends nor tooltips, even after switching to Vector 2022 (which I don’t use because it’s unreadable on narrow screens), and even after switching to visual diff (which I also don’t normally use). Thanks! Al12si (talk) 21:51, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gah. It looks like this wasn't finalized after all. A miscommunication error on my part, I think. >.<
I've added a notice at the project page. :(
Thanks for the note. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 01:20, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

jquery.tipsy[edit]

I know this is from a month ago. But coming from someone who’s usually anti-Javascript, this change is disruptive. The news item mentioned switching to OO.ui.PopupWidget as a solution and there’s a link that purports to explain how to switch but I just went there and there’s zero explanation.

What are local wikis supposed to do when this change has broken essential functionality? Al12si (talk) 20:20, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Al12si It would be best to ask on the related phabricator task, phab:T336019. I'm usually the only person watchlisting these Tech News talkpages (or one of my colleagues). If you do ask there, it might be helpful if you could also include link(s) to the specific problem(s) you have noticed, so that someone can more easily understand the context and provide a solution.
