Edit notice before system test?[edit]

Before the system test, will you provide an edit notice on ALL Wikimedia pages alerting that a test will occur on this date? Will we be signed out? UpsandDowns1234 (Talk to me) (My Contribs) 04:35, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You will not be signed out (unless something goes very wrong, I suppose).
There will be Special:CentralNotice banners for about two hours immediately before the changes, on all the wikis. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:33, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

translation: Esperanto[edit]

{{#babel:eo-3}} I've been editing Wikipedia for twelve years, but I'm a total newbie to this meta-wiki. I saw that Esperanto was on the translation list. I'm fairly fluent in it — been using for over half a century— and picked up the initial translation that someone had done about halfway and then left off, probably for sleep or something silly like that. ;-) I did a fair bit of fixup on the translation done thus far, including a lot of basic grammatical correction, and then went on to finish the initial translation job. (The partials in the righthand column were a big help, but also fairly errorful, especially in case and number agreement.)

Then... I don't know what comes next. Well, obviously proofreading. The page now shows that for State, but at this point (2:50 am here) I don't remember if I made that change or if the back end did it. Anyhow, that's how things stand there.

Please {{Ping}} me to discuss. --Thnidu (talk) 07:05, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Thnidu, for all of this.
I think that the proofreading/reviewing state is an automatic thing. Your translation should be showing automatically to everyone.
The partial translations are based on previous manual translations (in all translated messages/all time on this entire wiki). If you think about how many times people write something like "Thank you" or "Please contact me if you have any questions" in messages, then it's obvious why translators would want an option to just copy over the same thing as the last time. If you translate a sentence one way, and another translator did it another way, and the sentence gets used a third time in the future, then both of those options will be shown for the third time. I think – I'm not certain, but I think it will work this way – that if you went to Tech/Server switch 2016/eo (and/or any other pages that use similar sentences) and corrected any grammar errors, then only the updated/corrected versions would show next time. @Whatamidoing (WMF): Thanks for the explanation of how this works. I may try to make corrections as your last sentence suggests, but not now. Or I may not manage to get to it, though I'd like to clean it up. --Thnidu (talk) 05:19, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Tomorrow[edit]

m:Tech/Server switch 2017 is on track for about 19 hours from now. There will be NO EDITING for about 30 minutes on both Wednesday, 19 April at 14:00 UTC and Wednesday, 3 May at 14:00 UTC. This will affect ALL of the wikis. You will be able to read the wikis and to log in, but you will not be able to edit.

Please note:

  1. There will be CentralNotice banners running to remind people at the last minute.
  2. Any unexpected problems should be reported either in Phab (tag with #codfw-rollout) or on IRC at #wikimedia-tech. Some of my teammates will be on IRC in case you have questions.
  3. If RecentChanges takes a while to wake up (like it did last time), then I've written out one process for how to find the 'lost' edits at w:en:WP:AN.
  4. Once the wikis are up, the first place that I will look for comments/problems on this is at w:en:WP:VPT. If you have problems, please post there instead of here.

Hi, Whatamidoing. Remember me? Last time I recognized the problem with recent changes you described and rat it on IRC. This time I'm teaching in the switch time. Please be good, . IKhitron (talk) 21:57, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is one of those moments when I think about how much gainful employment interferes with editing. ;-) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 05:29, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Done?[edit]

Just checking this is successfully completed so we can remove all notices about impending server downtime. Deryck C. 16:39, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
