Discussion topic for "Quality Signal Sessions: The Wikidata edition" session participants.[edit]

Here are a few discussion questions for the feedback session with the Wikidata community:

  • What is biggest challenge/problem you have that tools solve for?
  • What is 1 or more tool(s) you currently are using that is useful and valuable to you?
    • For each of those tools, where did you find out about them and how to use them?
      • Was it difficult to find?
      • What makes a tool trustworthy?
      • If you could filter your tool search results, what would you filter for?
      • What tools have you avoided or stopped using?
      • What informed your decision?
  • Is there anything you wish you knew ahead of time?
  • Which tools do you contribute to the most?
    • What makes these tools attractive to contribute to?
  • How do you decide to join a tool project?
    • What information are you looking for?

We invite you to share your feedback below. SSethi (WMF) (talk) 22:47, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[]

Input from the most active tool maintainers needed - links to some pointers[edit]

In order to get decent input on these questions, I think it's crucial if you hear from the most active tool maintainers. Are you actively reaching out to them?

  • Tools used for Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. When I still worked at the Wikimedia Foundation (several years ago already) I have once made a large list / spreadsheet of tools that are actively used on Wikimedia Commons. Their maintainers are listed alongside them. With a bit of digging, I found it again here as linked from this page related to Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. This will give pointers to some users / developers who should be consulted here.
  • Tools used in the GLAM-Wiki community. One recent overview of that (with a focus on tools used for structured data) can be found here on Wikimedia Commons.

Spinster, thank you for sharing your thoughts! The information you have shared is valuable; we will develop a plan soon to gather feedback from the tool maintainers. Is there a specific list where I could find the tool maintainers in the GLAM wiki community? Maybe we can promote the "tool maintainers" edition when we have it with them. Hello Shrishti, you can find the user names of maintainers in this spreadsheet. Many of the tools in this list are used in a GLAM context. Spinster (talk) 11:25, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[]

Questions:

  • Tell us about the last time you had discovered a useful tool?
  • What is the goal you’re trying to achieve? What tasks are all involved?
  • What is the first thing you do when looking for a tool?
  • What goes into the decision making process for whether you’ll use this tool?
  • What workarounds currently exist in your current process?
  • What do you dread doing? What do you avoid? Why?
  • What could be easier? Why?
