Typo?[edit]

The page's top bar says "WikiData Free Image Search Tool". Shouldn't it be "Wikidata" instead, with a lowercase d?

The upper-case letters make up "WDFIST". --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:40, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

E0:No items to process[edit]

I use to be a heavy user of this tool, but recently every Wikidata query I try is met with the error "E0:No items to process".

Even the "Indian writers" example query, and even the query that I had bookmarked and were working (and had plenty of items left... it is hard to believe that someone just processed thousands of items overnight).

Is there a technical problem maybe? Thanks! Syced (talk) 04:24, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Indian writers may be empty because everyone clicks on the example... No technical issue I am aware of. I get plenty of results for queries. --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:42, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

E1: Bad API response mwoauth-invalid-authorization-invalid-user despite WiDaR authorized, on Android[edit]

WDFIST works great on desktop computers, but not on Android.

I authorized WiDaR, but pressing "Add as image" fails with error "E1: Bad API response" mentioning "mwoauth-invalid-authorization-invalid-user".

Reproduced with both Firefox and Chromium on Android 6.0.1 CyanogenMod 13.0-20160817.

By the way, is there an issue tracker for WDFIST? I could not find one at https://bitbucket.org/magnusmanske/ . Thanks! Syced (talk) 03:56, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The bug tracker is for the original FIST tool, here. WDFIST is not a stand-alone-tool, but part of the FIST code. As for the issue, I just added an image from Android (Chrome) using WDFIST/WiDaR, so that seems to work. --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:47, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Buttons should have tooltips[edit]

Nice tool! Charles Matthews used it today as part of a training session.

An observation from a novice user: if I mouse over an image, four buttons are displayed:

 • Add as image
 • Add as...
 • Block image
 • Crop notice

It is not obvious what exactly these buttons do, especially the last two. It would be great if these buttons had tooltips, and/or if there was some help text somewhere at the top of the page, describing their purpose.

Please notify me in your reply. Thanks! Zazpot (talk) 16:23, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Icon for WDFIST?[edit]

We need more people to use WDFIST, as the number of items without an image continues to grow. I am sure many people use the tool once then forget about it.

A simple trick to make the tool more memorable would be to create an icon for it.

This icon could be used:

 • On the tool itself, as a favicon and small icon besides the tool's name
 • In places that showcase the tool
 • In the Commons Android app

Anyone has ideas for an icon? Feel free to post your designs, or just ideas, below. Thanks! :-)

I would use it, but I dont understand it. So maybe just a documentation and few examples? Why the tool needs query? I cannot just a add a list of Q numbers and link a category on commons, or add directly filenames?Juandev (talk) 14:30, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Documentation...[edit]

Some program's input pages are helpful enough that one can figure out how to use them, without reading the manual. Newsflash. https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/wdfist/ is not one of those.

If this page is intended to explain how to use the program, sorry, it is opaque as mud.

I've tried to go to wikidata pages, and manually add images, without using this program. There doesn't seem to be an obvious way how to do that, either. Geo Swan (talk) 23:59, 17 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of Q IDs linked to filenames[edit]

Is there a way to do mass deployment without a query using a list of Q IDes with adequate filenames on commons? Juandev (talk) 14:27, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

QuickStatements is the right tool for what you describe :-) Syced (talk) 13:46, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Queries fail with strange and obscure error - why?[edit]

 • Any query is running fine in Wikidata Query delivering a nice list of Qnumbers, but then fails when executed in WDFIST with a popup error...
 • Same error with a Wikipedia Category
 • Same error with only one single Q-number
query_failed

Any idea? Maybe a (transient) general technical failure of the WDFIST tool? Geert Van Pamel (WMBE) (talk) 19:48, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Now it runs OK? Geert Van Pamel (WMBE) (talk) 22:24, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It fails again since several days... Geert Van Pamel (WMBE) (talk) 15:42, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
