Talk:Wikimania/Scholarships/SWOT 2005-2014 and goals for 2015

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Some other suggestions received. Things to consider in the application form:

  • Prioritize people who don't have a local community (employer / university, chapter, &c) that could support them
  • Prioritize people who truly can't afford to come (most of our recipients still come from fairly wealth parts of the world)
  • Increase priority for those who have never attended a wikimania
  • Increase priority for active contributors to the projects (not evaluating the quality of the application in itself: i.e. if it is well written)
  • Ask each recipient to pay for as much of their attendance as possible (encourage claiming partial scholarships where possible). Remind them that anything they pay will help other scholarship recipients attend.
  • Ask every part of the movement to support at least equal amounts of $ for scholarship travel and for travel of their staff members.
  • Asking for explicit writing / blogging / outreach by recipients, while at Wikimania and when back home, is another potential improvement. This has been done better and worse at various times in the past.
  • how much of a difference you may make at the conference as a criteri (i.e. presentation, active involvement).

    • The one thing I have objections for is the last bullet: sometimes I saw an inflation of presentations produced just for the sake of earning a scholarship or reimbursement. Bringing value to others is the goal, yes; but "presentations" are mostly a selfish thing. The program committee has a hard job, sure. :) --Nemo 20:04, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The same people at Wikimania again and again[edit]

"Wikimania scholarships are granted to same persons again and again". I have the impression there are regular attendees. People who go want to go again (which is actually a very good feedback for the conference); not sure if they go with the same system (they might use different kind of scholarships or travel support i.e. Wikimedia Foundation scholarship, local chapter scholarship, grant for Wikimania included in the IEG, support because you are in a committee... this is the system I used and others I know used similar solutions to cover their costs). --iopensa (talk) 09:25, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
