Talk:Wikimedia/Museum Day 2020/Wikidata Competition

Languages[edit]

As always the rules and regulations for competitions should be translated to at least the languages of the targeted audience (mainly German and French, but also for minority languages in the participating countries) before the competition starts. Please be a kind wikicitizen. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 06:14, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

calculation of points[edit]

The score is calculated based on the Characters added metrics in the Dashboard(s). At least as important as adding information is the deletion of wrong information. How will this taken into account? --Herzi Pinki (talk) 06:21, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is no alternative count for deletions of erroneous entries planned. We focus on adding information, while of course it would be kind of the participants if they also remove false data, even if it reduces their score a little here an there. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 10:15, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Place on Wikidata?[edit]

I can see some merit in having a Wikidata-centric initiative based outside of Wikidata, but shouldn't there be a place on Wikidata as well? Haven't found any yet. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:03, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Daniel Mietchen: We thought about it, but I was not sure where on Wikidata the right place would be. There is a site notice on the main page that should be visible to all users and it was added to Wikidata:Status updates/2020 05 04. The Wikidata:News seem to encompass internal news, like milestones.
If you can point me to a page where it fits I will gladly add it there. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 15:27, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Manfred Werner (WMAT): Wikidata:WikiProject Museums would seem like a good umbrella under which to set up some space for this competition and where to notify people known to be interested in such matters. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:47, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Daniel Mietchen: Thank you! I added a note to the discussion page. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 11:27, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation of algorithm[edit]

Hi, yesterday I merged a lot of double items about Italian museum found here and I found out that I lost 236 references. Why? How merging items causes loss of points/data? How this will be calculated at the end? --★ → Airon 90 07:07, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Airon90: Why references are lost when merging items we have to check. I'd guess maybe identical ones used in both data sets are merged into one.
For the contest, the column "References Added" of the dashboards does not count anyway, only "Characters Added" will be considered. In some cases - like references lost - this number may be reduced. There was also a contributor who pointed to a reduced score because of removed false data. But as the rules of this one were defined with "The score is calculated based on the Characters added metrics in the Dashboard(s)" and "1 added character = 1 point" we cannot change that now after it started. We will definitely have to remember (and resolve) this issue for future competitions. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 19:08, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
great compliment for Not changing after it started. like that, really. Should be standard. But if a competition does not honor necessary cleanup, merging, deleting of false information, it is less likely such actions will be taken at all. On the other hand rewarding deletion of false information might attract the wrong people. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 22:56, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
