Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Add or improve content
  2. Recruit new editors
  3. Engage existing editors

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

The overall purpose of this Wiki Loves Classics photo contest is to increase the amount of freely-licensed material related to ancient Greek and Roman monuments (and other ancient civilizations especially from the Mediterranenan Area) on Wikimedia Commons. It also aims to improve the quality and quantity of Wikidata items and Wikipedia articles about them, including the illustration of the items/articles related to the uploaded pictures. Within this scope, after internal discussion, we are asking funding to finance the cost of the prizes for the contest winners.

2. How will you let people know about the contest?

  1. Community notification in the talk pages of all the projects listed here.
  2. Promoting the competition through the use of our social networks (Facebook and mainly Twitter).
  3. Press release announcing the competition just some days before the starting date to the Departments of Classics at least in the Universities of mostly European countries.
  4. We will invite national chapters and user groups participating to Wiki Loves Monuments to actively join the communication strategy, the categorization efforts and the selection process, if they want.

3. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?

First of all, we need to complete the selection of the members of the jury committee by the end of the monht. The entries will be judged by a jury consisting of WikiClassics UG members and photography experts, in the following months but expert users should be present since the beginning to moitor the overall process.
Prizes will be awarded to the three best photographs (the best files of each categories with the higher rank will be the awarded finalists; if they do not reach the third phase, we will declare winner the best files in the second phase if the mark is at least 6.0/10.0). Photographers in 4th to 10th place will get a participation certificate.
The selection of the winners will take place in three steps through Montage (expert organizer Alexmar983): first phase at least 2 out of 3; second phase rating; third phase ranking.
  • For all files of the second phase we should provide labels and descriptions in at least 3 languages and related Wikidata items.
  • For all files of the third phase we should provide labels and descriptions in at least 5 languages and related Wikidata items, and at least one related wikipedia article if not present.
  • For all the winner files we should provide labels and descriptions in at least 7 languages and related Wikidata items, and at least 3 related wikipedia articles if not present.

4. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

We are also going to encourage various editing communities (the members of WikiClassics UG will inform their home communities) to enrich existing articles related to the monuments, to add pictures to related Wikipedia or Wikivoyage articles.
We will also generate a list of photographed monuments and photos contributed for each of them.
The on line community of classicists is particularly interested in metadata management so the new feautures of commons structured data require specific literacy, which will aslo encourage the discovery of the commons archive outside ou platforms.

5. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This is the first time a transversal competition is organized this way. It's a way to push for bottom-up coordination, and to provide manpower to less structured communities. It's very important because it paves the way to similar initiatives by other thematic communities.

Please consider that every help will be apreciated for a more robust 2020 edition wich will be done. The category systems on commons already consider the presence of a general category and a 2019 category of the competition.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

this is a trasnversal competition so it's complicated to estimated the impact unless we performa carefully analysis of many previous editions which we don't have the time now. We provide bulk target for this edition but we are also using the communication effort of other affiliates.

For photo contests:

  • Number of participants: 100+
  • Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: 1000+
  • 1 new member for the UG from a country not already represented
  • 4 months after the contest, 20% of photos are used on wiki projects (improved quality or detailed pictures)
  • 4 months after the event, 5+ uploaded photos are categorized as valued, quality or featured images.
  • 150 new followers on Twitter and 50 new followers on Facebook for the UG network by the end of the grant period, starting from the date September, 1st.
  • We will create a new Instagram account and we hope to get there at least 100 new follower by the end of the grant period.

Additional comments[edit]

  • The proposed amount: 1020 € [2]
  • Transfering information in c:Commons:Wiki Loves Classics 2019
    • by the end of August, we will create a description page on Commons for the category system, the members of the jury so far and the content-related goals.
  • File sorting
    • we have at least two expert volunteers to double check all images uploaded by country, which if exposed in chronological not alphabetical order can be found this type of link. The revision will take place for ca 35-40 countries but will be specifically accurate for at least 20-25 of them who insist on the Western European, Mediterranean, Balcanic and Middle East areas.
    • each additional volunteer from UG can help with at least one country.
  • if fundings are available, we will immediately post on Facebook and more importantly Twitter news of the competition.
  • Coordination with other organizers. We will inform before the end of August organizers of specific country by email and on talk pages (commons:Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019/Participating countries). we have already started with the dradt of this page and continue later - we will link them the social media in order to be pinged and crossposted, they can:
    • help us categorizing files (this way they can spot if we miss something)
    • inform national communities and their social media network
  • Jury
    • by the beginning of September, we will have confirmed the basic jury consisting at least with Wikimedia volunteers from at least four countries.
  • Selection
    • selection tool: commons:Commons:Montage (expert organizer Alexmar983) ^
    • first phase at least 2 out of 3
    • second phase rating
    • third phase ranking.
    • The best files of each categories with the higher rank will be the awarded finalists. If they do not reach the third phase, we will declare winner the best files in the second phase if the mark is at least 6.0/10.0
  • Prizes
  • Prize target categories are:
    • best archaeological area;
    • best museum object;
    • best inscription(s);
    • we will give our three prizes to the most significant of them.
    • another possible category could be "best interaction between modern and classic" but we can try that next year. The second and the third one are most important for the creation of new content.
  • Content creation
    • for all files of the second phase we should provide labels and descriptions in at least 3 languages and related Wikidata items
    • for all files of the third phase we should provide labels and descriptions in at least 5 languages and related Wikidata items, and at least one related wikipedia article if not present;
    • for all the winner files we should provide labels and descriptions in at least 7 languages and related Wikidata items, and at least 3 related wikipedia articles if not present;
    • please notice many areas such as Northern Africa and Eastern Europe will benefit from such effort
  • Outreach
    • Our twitter has already started a campaign of retweet of WLM2019 communications from other affiliates so they will be already aware of us when we will inform them.
    • Users interested in the competition will be combined with users of the UG to create the mass message lists of the WikiClassics UG.

Notes[edit]

  1. Probably the same paper we use for [BqvN2erAAbk Wiki Loves Toscany]
  2. This is leftover money from Grants:IdeaLab/"Sapere aude!", if possible. This way we don't give money to a bank while retransfering. The grant was the parent initiative of the current UG.-
