Conference about Telangana Culture, Literature, Language and Festivals[edit]

CIS-A2K collaborated with the Language and Culture Department of the Government of Telangana and Digi”Tel” Telangana to organize the conference about “Telangana culture, Literature, Language and Festivals in Digital Medium” during 12 - 13 October 2018. The event was collaborated with CIS-A2K where Telugu Wikimedian User:Pranayraj1985 was the main coordinator in planning and executing. Along with User:Pranayraj1985 another Telugu Wikimedian User:Ajaybanbi was part of the event. In this event 19 Telugu Wikipedians were commended by the Government of Telangana for their effort and contributions to Telugu Wikipedia.

Outcome[edit]

In this event Mamidi Harikrishna, director of Telangana Language and Culture Department announced to re-license 8 Telugu books and oil paintings of 38 Telangana luminaries into CC-BY license. A2K will work on OTRS process inorder to actualizing announcement.

Learning[edit]

Working with mission-aligned government departments will help sustaining wikimedia activities and impact in a bigger level.

Follow-up[edit]

A2K along with User:Pranayraj1985 is planning to conduct Telugu Wiki conference about direction of the project during June 2019.

Completion of First phase of Telugu Village Articles improvement[edit]

Telugu Village articles project aimed to improve thousands of articles about Telangana and Andhra Pradesh villages completed of its first phase in November 2018. Community members User:Chaduvari, User:Yarra Ramarao, and User:Bhaskaranaidu collaborated with CIS-A2K to complete the first phase. These articles were created in 2006 using a bot and were considered as quality issue to the project for more than decade.

Outcome[edit]

During this period more than 7000 articles improved. Those articles have information about education, health, irrigation, geographical, demographic status of that village based on 2011 Indian census data.

Learning[edit]

Updating information of Telangana Village articles which affected by state reorganization, district reorganization, and mandal reorganization. To accelerate the growth, more active participants should be encouraged and trained to work in the project.

Follow up[edit]

In the next phase for this project deals with creating mandal level articles and updating correct names of villages. A2K would like to work on obtaining the data required for this from the Government. A2K is also coordinating an personalized training for User:Ajaybanbi with one of the major contributors of the projects User:Yarra Ramarao to create and improve mandal articles.

Initiating Good article process in Telugu Wikipedia[edit]

A2K started working with User:Chaduvari to frame and start Good article process in Telugu Wikipedia. In this process, A2K also conducted a workshop for Telugu Wikipedia quality improvement. In that analyzed quality gaps of articles featured on Telugu Wikipedia main page and conducted personalized trainings on Good article process. In this initial stage, Nine articles were improved and proposed for GA process.

Learning[edit]

  • Popularizing, Training and motivation needed to accelarate GA process in Telugu Wikipedia.
  • Good article process can encourage community to work more in terms of Quality.

Follow-up[edit]

A2K will conduct 4 online sessions to Telugu Wikimedians in February who are interested on Quality improvement of the project initially to increase participation in GA process.

Telugu Wikisource Support[edit]

Activity[edit]

CIS-A2K supported community in Copyrights and in prioritization.

  • Created a Copyrights guidelines that helps users to find out status of Telugu books with specific emphasis on PD-India and URAA.
  • Worked on creating a list of public domain works in The list of the must read 100 Telugu books in 20th Century published in 1999 by Tana magazine "Ee Shatabdapu Rachana Shatam". This was adopted by some community members for prioritizing effort.
  • We collaborated with community members to create a list of Telugu authors' whose works are in public domain that helped community to identify books to upload and work on.

Follow-up[edit]

A2K would like to improve it to make an extensive list of authors whose works are in public domain to help Telugu community to upload books in a massive scale during April and May 2019. In coming months, A2K would extend support to remaining wikisource communities to adopt some of these best practices.

Improving retention using Communities of Interest[edit]

Activity[edit]

CIS-A2K has been worked with like-minded, introduced and trained them on Wikimedia projects during 2016 - 17. Also approched users who registered by themselves, made very few but good edits and left Wikipedia to follow them up. After these interventions, 4 of the participants started contributing to different Wikimedia projects on a regular basis. Please read more about it in CIS-A2K impact report for 2017-18. Following our previous experience, CIS-A2K continued to promote Wikimedia projects amongst a groups of people with specific and similar interest such as film studies, classical Telugu literature, census and administrative entities. We approached film critics, literary historian, professional photographer and discussed different aspects of the movement.

User:Yasshu28 who writes film reviews and User:Raamanamma kalidassu a literary historian started contributing the continuously to Wikimedia projects online and offline. User:Yasshu28 improved more than 12 articles about films which lack content and citations in terms of quality and content. After learning about style, policies, and guidelines and started contributing to GA process. User:Raamanamma kalidassu relicensed biographic work written by him into free license and supported A2K in reaching out heir of an author whose work is completed by Telugu Wikisource volunteers and has a disputed copyrights status. He is also contributing to Telugu Wikipedia by creating and improving articles about Notable people from Nelluru district. A2K involved User:Ramesam54, a very active user resulted from similar previous efforts, in National level activities (TTT 2018 and Indic Wikisource Community Consultation 2018) which result in leadership building.

Outcome[edit]

Editors retained from this process improved 30 articles in Telugu Wikipedia with 255 Kilobytes. Users like User:Raamanamma kalidassu, User:Yasshu28, User:Yarra Ramarao, and User:Ramesam54 who retained from such efforts are planning and conducting activities to get more Wikimedians from their respective communities of interest.

Learning[edit]

A2K needs to collaborate with interest groups working on Women and Dalit studies in order to diversify participation and content.

Follow-up[edit]

  • To take these efforts forward, A2K is planning to co-organize edit-a-thons with these users about their communities of interests (Local history, Film studies, and Classical Poetry) in January and February 2019.
  • A orientation/training workshop will be conducted with these commmunities of interest before April 2019 where retained editors from our earlier efforts will be trainers.
  • A2K would implement peer learning process where interested active users will continously help one or two new Wikimedians each for a couple of months to sustain follow-up and create a ripple effect in retention efforts.
