Japanese Wiktionary[edit]

@CKoerner (WMF): I wonder why you used "Wiktionary:編集室" for Japanese Wiktionary in [1], which appeared to trigger [2]. I remember (and expect) getting mass messages at "Wiktionary:Sabo" instead. (The reason for this is a bit complicated, but it's basically about formatting and language.) Do you have a link to the original list so that I can perhaps recommend a fix? --whym (talk) 09:17, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Whym: I'm using a new tool to generate target lists that what has been used in the past. Which, generally has been manually curated lists of target pages. The list for this message was generated using the Wikidata MassMessage tool and the Wikidata entries for "village pumps". This is the list generated which should have used the technical village pumps first. If there is no local technical village pump then it would fall back to the primary Village Pump. It appears that "Wiktionary:編集室" is in the latter list. I hope that helps explain the "Why". :) If the Wikidata entries need to be updated to point to a different "village pump" we can make that change easily. If there's still confusion, let me know and we'll figure it out together. CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 13:54, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@CKoerner (WMF): Thank you for the explanation. As you probably can see from [3] the primary Village Pump (Wiktionary:編集室) is not actually a page to be edited for normal posts - normal posts go to subpages which are transluded there. So when an automated message arrives there, we have to manually move it. I believe a similar system is implemented at wikt:Wiktionary:Grease pit where the bot is instructed to write to a subpage, apparently. Whatever workaround you use for it, could you use it for Japanese Wiktionary? Unlike English Wiktionary, it's quarterly not monthly there - currently a new section is to be created by https://ja.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Wiktionary:%E7%B7%A8%E9%9B%86%E5%AE%A4/2018%E5%B9%B4Q3&action=edit&section=new (pagename: Wiktionary:編集室/2018年Q3).whym (talk) 13:40, 2 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@CKoerner (WMF): The idea behind manually curated list, as I understand, is that every wiki can set whether they want to receive global announcements at village pump (or its equivalent) or at some separate page (embassy, annoncements' portal or whatever). I don't quite get it why use this Wikidata tool if established lists like Distribution list/Global message delivery are available. 2001:7D0:81F7:B580:4534:52AB:722E:AA8B 22:33, 6 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You know what? You're right. There's far too much nuance in the lists of target pages that I shouldn't be using this tool for such broad announcements. I should stick to the curated lists and only use this tool for smaller, specific targets. Sorry for fumbling this one. I'll do better going forward.
