Hi -- each time I try to find a category for my uploaded photo -- I get the following message:

<Image not found on commons.wikimedia.org!>

Yet, the photo shows up on recently uploaded photos. Any suggestions?

Thanks, gaynewyorker

CommonSense reloaded? :)

Hi! I leave you a message at Village Pump some days ago. Will you plan to recode CommSense tool? I find it very useful. Specially the posibility of search categories from text on the page or just putting the text into a form page.

Of course, I know you are very busy. It's just a question. Regards, --Colegota 18:16, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

not sure what you mean by "recode", but it's back online since yesterday, see commons:COM:VP#Think of the Orphans! (or: CommonSense reloaded). Have fun! -- Duesentrieb(?!) 20:02, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes, i know. Database permissions for wikimaniawiki are missing. But "all wikis" is not very useful anyway - only wikipedias have a helpful structure. So, i've disabled the "all wikis" option for now.

Thanks for the feedback! -- Duesentrieb(?!) 23:01, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ok. It's possible to have a tool like "Use keywords from the description text" without having any image uploaded yet? It will be useful to me because I must to do an investigation work before start upload any new bunch of images (usually places). I know the "description text" taken by wiki pages or my own sources and I can fill it. But now, with current tool, I must upload first an image and it passes some time before that image is found in search. Or try to find similar pages looking for related categories.
Regards, --Colegota 07:38, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
For images not yet on the commons, use the "Move" option and give a wiki (language) to search in. If the image is on that wiki, enter the name of the image at the top and click "find categories". If necessary, click "keywords from description" after that. If the image is not on the wiki either, simply enter keywords - CommonSense will then look for articles on the wiki you specified, that match the keywords.
Maybe I should add some text to explain this - but I didn't want to make the interface so crowded... Try it out and tell me if it works for you. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:52, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hum... It's not the same. Try this.

  • Take a look to the commons:Jiaohe ruins gallery. Or commons::Image:Turpan-jiaohe-ruinas-d16.jpg page.
  • Copy the text description (I have it previous to upload) into the keywords field. First problem is that you can't paste multilineal text in a single line input. So just, take the english text. There is no match.
  • Now put "Image:Turpan-jiaohe-ruinas-d16.jpg" on image field (with or without keywords). There is no match again.
  • Now press on "Use keywords from description" and check the results. That's I'd like from begining. :) The pages that matches keywords is very useful for me. And of course, the suggested categories.

I think there is not the same search just from keywords field. I hope that helps. Regards, --Colegota 14:42, 12 December 2005 (UTC) PD I can translate it to Spanish when you consider it "stable".Reply

More feedback... In last example maybe the engine must be find commons::Category:Turpan instead of commons::Category:Xinjiang (first one is under second one) and find also commons::Category:Ruins even commons::Category:Jiaohe ruins. It's correct? It's possible? I think the problem is to avoid the search from Commons. In last versions we can look both in wikipedias and other projects, and the search in Commons is very important too. --Colegota 14:57, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Some interface feedback

[edit]

Basically there is a need to specify two wikis. One is the source wiki, if an image is supplied (at the moment, by default, commons), and the other is the wiki you want to find categories in.

Also, what does custom wikis mean? Does it mean "the ones I listed under 'Additional' only"? (I think it must.) If you want to explain things like that without putting heaps of extra text, you could just use a link to "Explanation" page, or have "hover over" pop-ups (but I don't know how complex that is).

Anyway, I made this fake picture of what I think a clear interface would look like. What do you think? Is it correct in terms of how CommonSense works?

I also added lines specifically for en:, as well as commons, as I believe those would be the most commonly used. I just thought of something interesting - you could have it specify commons, the language-specific one, and then write in for the rest (eg "English" interface lists en, "German" interface lists de:, etc). I don't know if that would be a lot of extra work or not though.

I figured out one time when it doesn't give any results - when you fill out all the details on the top and then click "Find Categories" at the bottom. That's not very smart, but then, user's aren't. :) As you can see the one I made only has one "find categories" button, so they can't get it wrong (I hope).

When I tried to enter "zh" (Chinese) in the "additional" wikis, it said "unknown project: zh". [2]

I just noticed you had your own category-tree thing! Did you know this had been developed? Whatever, I love them both.

OK last thing. Did you know that when it has links to pages an image has been used in, the links are kind of weird? The links are like http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lushan but maybe that's exactly the same as http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lushan anyway? I don't know.

Anyway please let me know what you think - maybe I have completely misunderstood how it works. :)

Thanks again, pfctdayelise 15:27, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I'm not sure. I think this feedback were for Duesentrieb, but I like to add some point of view.
I'm uploading photos of my travels so I have some information about places. Usually from travel guidebooks, Internet searches and my own experience. This is not enought frequently and of course I must to "syncronize" that information with the existing in Wikipedias and Commons.
So, first, I need to collect as much information as possible about this places. Then, It's useful to know every place in any Wikipedia where talks about the location.
Second. I need to categorize it in Commons. So, I need to know existing related categories in Commons. If there is some/s branch/es of some/s tree/s in Commons that match I use it. If not I look in en:, the rest of the Wikis or I create it.
That's my method so my dreamed features are:
* Not to have an Image uploaded previously to search (I upload by bunchs using perl upload tool where I must to fill descriptions and categories better before upload). But getting the same results as in the example described above.
* Include in search all the wikipedias (you never knows where someone writes about) and Commons (maybe there is previous information, categories and/or images).

I know that's not the aim to create CommonSense, but it can be very useful for me, and I suppose that many users too. Regards, --Colegota 18:26, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry to say, but I basically found CommonSense pretty useless. It just has a bunch of boxes and controls but no explanation of what a user is supposed to do to run it, and certainly no explanation of what you do with the results. A few sentences giving an overview of the process, what the results mean, and what to do with them, would be appreciated. Otherwise, it's like most of Wiki, just more useless code that some programmer thought really cool, but in reality annoys and confuses users. --NateOceanside 02:49, 24 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

New Version

[edit]

I have just put a new version online. Thanks to you, I fixed quite a few bugs and tweaked a few things. It should now give much better results, even. Here are a few things is did:

  • look for keywords directly on the commons first.
  • fixed loading of page text from wikis
  • split keyords also on whitespace; for multi-word keywords, use '_' instead of space.
  • fixed lookup to wiki-list to handle zh correctly (was blocked by the obsolete zh-tw wiki, which used the same language code)
  • added more explanation text

@Pfctdayelise:

  • I have not yet changed much about the interface. It's the third time I reworked it, and it still needs more thought. It's not as simple as you think, because there are two desting use cases. The two "find categories" buttons do the same, btw, but the lower one also forces "move" mode. I guess i'll have to move stuff around some more...
  • A message for "you left field xy blank" should be added, yes. Maybe later.
  • Using the interface language to define the default wiki to look in is a good idea... i'll try it out some time.
  • Yes, I know about the other category tool. I wrote mine about two weeks before Kolossos, and then the toolserver crashed;) It's funny how much they look alike, he's even using much the same technology as I have. I have send him my code, my JS stuff is better ;)
  • /w/index.php?title=Lushan is the "canonical" form of the URL, which will also work for all actions. Everything else is just "prettification".

@Colegota: As far as I understood you, CommonSense should now do pretty much exactly what you want.

Yes! :) It's what I wanted. I will test in different ways and tell you more feedback about thinks I'm finding on a separate section. Thank you a lot. --Colegota 12:57, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

So... try it out once more, have fun! -- Duesentrieb(?!) 19:02, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

It's much better now. The explanations are clearer, I think. But still, I find it funny the section is called "move". If I have a picture not yet uploaded (ie only keywords), why should I use the "move" section? It still gives categories in commons, and using the "cleanup" section gives the same or similar results.
The results are always categories on commons, yes? So actually, from my picture, we can delete the whole section on the right. ;) pfctdayelise 22:42, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the results are always categories and galleries on the commons. "Move" is primarily intended for moving an image from a wikipedia to commons, but it will also work for keyword-only-searches, i.e. if the image has not been uploaded at all. And yes, the two modes are very similar, but there are some differences: for instance, where the actual image data i loaded from. For a keyword search, both work, but "Move" makes more sense, because you usually know in which language your keywords are. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 22:56, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi. There is no default value selected at Search radio buttons group and if not selected by user appears an error. --Colegota 16:09, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Uh, tehre is a default value (20), it's marked as checked="checked" in HTML... what browser are you using? Even if the browser would not send a value for the radio buttons, 20 would still be used. Can you give me the URL for the error? -- Duesentrieb(?!) 16:14, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Sorry! It happened just one time. Later the 20 value is always selected. The error message talks about "wrong value -20 (minus sign)". But probably some cache problem. At this moment I'm using an Internet Explorer 6.0 under Win2000 and proxys, firewalls and more "filtering products". Now I'm returning to home page for every new test and forcing ctrl+F5 to ensure the latest version. --Colegota 16:49, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Can be CommonSense smarter?

[edit]

moved here from commons:User talk:Duesentrieb -- Duesentrieb 15:32, 9 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Now Commonsense is working as I asked for. But using it I found some features that maybe can be improved. I don't know if it's possible or interesting. I'm a programmer and I used for example to sql, but I don't know if it's applicable in wikipedia, and of course, if you have time to do it or find interest on it. So I just will put here my "brainstorm" and you act as you consider. I'm a little busy today so I'll put a comment every time I can do a new test.

  • First at all, one thinking. I tryed to put just the name of a place and it returns me the pages on wikipedias that matches the city and common categories. I think it's useful for people that want to start a new wikipedia article. Maybe can be interesting "export" the tool to wikipedia users. Maybe can be problems with overload of servers due to searches... :?
  • As you know places in Commons are named in native language while in Wikipedias are in "local" wikipedia language. So there is cases as "Turpan", "Yarkand" that in wikipedias are called in a different way so it not appears in CommonSense. It is possible when CommonSense find a macth in a Wikipedia "read" the Interwiki entries? Example, test "Turpan". It's found as commons::en:Turfan because there is a redirection from commons::en:Turpan, but take a look to interwiki on that page and you'll find 9 wikipedias instead of 3.
    • you can get that info by clicking the "tree" link at the category.
Ok. --Colegota 17:03, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
  • Humm... that's strange... if I put "Turpan" or "Turfan" it find some pages at wikis, but when I put

en: Jiaohe ruins are 8 km west of Turfan. Was a border garrison town in the Han dinasty until Gengis Khan destroyed it.
(that includes "Turfan") there is no match pages... :?
    • I get matches: [3].
I mean "Wikipedia pages". In the above url there is only a Commons page. --Colegota 17:03, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

When reporting something like this, please provide the URL, so I can reproduce it. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 16:42, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ok. --Colegota 17:03, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
  • There is an commons::Category:Uyghur people, but the word "Uyghur" returns no macthes in commons categories. I suppose that there is an "exact match" search. It's possible a "word match search"?
    • word match search is not possible directly on the databases, because they lack an appropriate index. Also, it would be much, much slower. Sure, it would be nice to have, but it's not practicable right now.
Ok. --Colegota 17:03, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
    • Anyway... copying the full description is not a good way to get meaningful keywords, there's a lot of "noise" there. Better enter them by hand. For multi-word keywords, use "_" instead of space, like in a Wikipedia URL. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 16:42, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
yes, but it's easy for me to take a text for a wikipedia or Internet page describing the place and "remove visually the noise" that select the meaningful keywords by myself. Usually I got the images but not the "knowledge". :) --Colegota 17:03, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
  • It's possible to "move" a (random) image found with CommonSense from a wiki directly to commons without having to download it to PC and upload it later to Commons?
    • In theory, yes, but that would be cool. But it's hard to do: I would have to deal with your login, keep a session, parse + fill html forms, download and re-upload the picture (which may take quite long), etc. MediaWiki does not have a decent bot interface. That makes things harder. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 12:40, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Please enter an image or some keywords (or both) to categorize. You can use the "Random Orphan" button to categorize an orphan image on the commons, or the "Random Image" button to categorize a random image from a given wiki.

You may give the domain names of additional wikis (e.g. fr.wiktionary.org) where the image may be used or the keywords may be found; for Wikipedias, you can just give the language code (e.g. en instead of en.wikipedia.org). You can specify multiple projects separated by commas.

logic templates on commons

[edit]

On commons I saw your inclusion of ! in helper templates. Do you favor putting the logic templates in there too (boolxor, qif etc) or do you prefer we mirror the WP supercats- esoteric templates and or logic templates? -MakThorpe 17:51, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't really care... for my tools to work, all templates should be categorized somehow (at least all templates thta are used on image pages). And i need clear categories for license things. The only reason i'm categorizing other stuff right now is to find out what license tags I have been missing :)
all that being said: With the new parser functions, I hope we can get rid if the logic and esotheric templates - so having one category "helper templates" for the remaining stuff is probably best. -- Duesentrieb 01:47, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Improving bot grabbed categories

[edit]

Hello. I see many miscategorized images on Wikimedia:Commons.

I notice many bot imported images have supercategories which should never go on individual images, for example "Category:Image source" or "Category:People by nationality". Perhaps the bot could have a list of inappropriate categories not to include on images?

Also, could the bot to use "(year) births" and "(year) deaths" categories? Example: Commons:Image:David Wilkie.jpg "Category:1785 births" "Category:1841 deaths", not "Category:1785" "Category:1841". "Category:(year)" should be date of image.

Thank you for your attention. -- Infrogmation 14:11, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

todo

Thanks for the suggestion. Maintaining a heard coded list of "bad" categories seems a bad idea - but if such categories where marked with a template, I could easily filter them out.
About the birth and death thigs: i didn't even know we had those categories on commons. Anyway, CommonSense does not know if the image shows a person, or if some year showing up is the date of birth, death, or when the image was taken. To get this right, simply add/fix the Commonscat template on the gallery in your local wiki. CommonSense looks for pages where the image is used, looks for categories this page is in, and tries to map them to commons, falling back on parent categories if no match is found. A match is found if the category has the same name, or there's a Commons or Commonscat template linking to commons. -- Duesentrieb 23:06, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

A database error has occurred Query: SELECT * FROM enwiki_p.image WHERE img_name = 'Von-allem-leid_panorama_w3795.jpg' Function: Error: 1146 Table 'enwiki_p.image' doesn't exist (sql-s2)

Anweisung:
[[Bild:von-allem-leid_panorama_w3795.jpg|thumb|upright=1.69|Zitat aus Albrecht Haushofers "Moabiter Sonette"]]

Was besagt die Meldung?

(anstatt

Also →

--Luxo 11:39, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Defsort

[edit]

Would it be possible, to transfer the defaultsort-line from the wiki, where the pic is taken from? At least for pictures from en-wp it would be usefull. Maybe it could be extracted from the category-lines, but that might be another step. --79.199.238.85 17:27, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Meta Categories

[edit]

Hiya. I've created a template on Commons, {{MetaCat}}, to identify categories which are just containers for other categories. These categories should not contain any media just sub categories. An example of this would be Food by country, which acts as a contain for thing like Cheese by country and Food of Spain. Can you make CommonSense aware of this template and not add files to categories tagged with it? Railwayfan2005 20:53, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nicht nachvollziehbare Verknüpfungen

[edit]

  1. fr: fr:Modèle:Pas fini und fr:Modèle:Suppression -> commons:category:maintenance
  2. en: en:Template:Include-USGov -> commons:Category:Image sources

I noticed that BotMultichill added this category to an image which did not include geocoding information. The category should never be added manually without the use of a template, so it can safely be excluded from suggestions. LX (talk, contribs) 20:16, 22 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nonsense categorization of builings

[edit]

In recent months, I have removed at Commons a lot of buildings that were for some reason categorized, usually simultaneously, in the following categories:

Recently, new images of buildings and landscapes, transferred from en.wikipedia have been categorized that way. The uploader I asked about it blamed the uploading bot, and the owner of the uploading bot told me that the CommonSense category finder may be the culprit. Can you please check seriously whether this is the case? It saves me or others repeatedly the time of having to clean up these categories by hand again and again. Not working: curl error?

Every time I try to use CommonSense by choosing "Find categories" from the Vector dropdown, I keep getting errors like the following:

" - curl returned an error: Couldn't resolve host 'rr.pmtpa.wikimedia.org'

and then a whole bunch more of the curl error lines repeated below in smaller type. I assume this is a bug. --Darkwind (talk) 06:41, 20 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not on English Wikipedia

I want to upload a photo from the US Federal Government, in PNG format, using Commonist. I am trying to use this tool to find categories. Here is the jpg version on my talk page:
