Book Uploader Bot - Arra aeternae salutis[edit]

I recently saw that you were trying to upload this book from Google Books to Internet Archive. For some reason, it failed. You can see the status here. I've reuploaded the book and it got uploaded successfully. You can check the uploaded book here.

Please let me know if you need any help. Thanks for using the BUB2 tool. Wassan.anmol (talk) 06:57, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

THANK YOU!!!! I was very frustrated that it did not work and could not figure out if I had done anything wrong. I hope to use this book on Latin Wikisource. It appears to be in the "emptyfiles" collection at IA (as was the first attempted upload, which was deleted). Can you fix that so that it is not auto-deleted at IA?
I am grateful that you have created this tool to assist with getting books uploaded. I had some trouble finding it, since it does not have its own heading on the page that lists the upload tools and how to use them (such as the IA uploader). But I finally found it on a more careful reading of the page. Thank you again. Laura1822 (talk) 18:31, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you liked the tool. Internet Archive is not letting me remove the emptyfiles collection, so I've requested IA team via email to remove it. I'm not sure why it didn't work for the first time. Maybe you could help me with the exact steps that you followed so that I can reproduce this issue and deploy a fix for the same. And thank you for the feedback on the documentation. I will definitely create this for future users. Wassan.anmol (talk) 22:37, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Update: "emptyfiles" collection has been removed from the item. Wassan.anmol (talk) 23:33, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking care of the "emptyfiles" collection. Also I noticed that the author is missing at IA. Is that something you can fix yourself easily?
I do not remember what I did when I tried to upload the "Arra" book. However, I just tried uploading another one, and I think the problem may be something to do with the catchpa. I do not see a URL with the form "https://books.googleusercontent.com/books/content?req=xxx" on the catchpa page, or anywhere else. When I enter the catchpa, it downloads to my computer. I have no idea what URL I entered in that box on BUB for the previous attempt. Perhaps I substituted the GB ID for xxx? I really don't remember. Just now when I pasted the URL for the catchpa page, BUB said it was an invalid URL.
Aha! I looked in my browser's "Downloads" and copied the "Download Address" for the file. It was:
I had to remove the URL (from this talk page) because Meta gives me this message (even after I entered a catchpa): "This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Antivandalism (local)"
I see that this is the "https://books.googleusercontent.com/books/content?req=xxx" form, but it is very long, not xxx. I tried copying just the part of the URL that was xxx here, and got the same "Antivandalism" message. If you need to see the long URL (which Meta won't let me post here), I'll have to try something else (adding spaces?) -- sorry, very annoying.
I pasted that into the box in BUB and got the "Voila! You will be mailed with the details soon!" message (which I did get before, with the "Arra" book).
When I look at the BUB queue, it appears to have worked this time; however, when I look at it on IA (using the link) there is metadata but no book in the viewer, like before; but there is a message: "this item is currently being modified/updated by the task: book_op" -- I don't remember that before. Also, there is a downloadable PDF which was not available before (with the first book). And again there is no author. (I wonder if that might be because IA does not like parentheses in the name, as it is on GB? Just a guess.)
Now IA says "this item is currently being modified/updated by the task: derive" so perhaps there is a valid process this time? I will look later.
UPDATE: bookviewer on IA is now working, and there are additional files for downloading options.
So it seems to have been successful this time, so I do not know what I did before that didn't work.
Also, I have not received any email. What email address does BUB use?
I would like to see better instructions within BUB for where to find the "https://books.googleusercontent.com/books/content?req=xxx" URL.
I hope this detail is useful to you. Laura1822 (talk) 14:14, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. However, I checked the logs but it shows no error so could be a random error. There have been certain new developments including the author metadata missing. If the book has the author in metadata in Google Books, it will be uploaded to the Internet Archive automatically. You may choose to re-upload the same book to add the author to the Internet Archive. Google Books shows a captcha (sometimes) while trying to access the direct PDF link which is shown in the popup in BUB2 when you press "Submit" and to get the actual PDF link, you need to enter the captcha. Google does it to prevent access to web bots. Yes, the URL is going to be long, so that's correct. Wassan.anmol (talk) 19:03, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Once an item is uploaded to IA, it runs tasks in the background and mainly book_op and derive tasks are concerned with generating proper preview. These tasks usually takes hours (sometimes days) to get completed. Once they are completed, you can then use it in the IAUpload tool to send it to Commons. Speaking of E-mail, right now the email functionality is disabled and we are actually working on bringing it back soon (check this phab ticket). Hope this clarifies your doubts. We will definitely work on improving the documentation for better usability. Wassan.anmol (talk) 19:03, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to not reply earlier. Your updates look good on IA. The best I can remember about the error of the original upload that did not work (looking at the BUB queue page) was something like "contents not allowed." Very puzzling to me. However, it was probably because I entered the wrong URL.
I am glad to know that I finally figured out how to do the upload correctly to find that long URL. I did guess that the IA tasks were working properly, but since I had never done it before, and I was trying to explain to you exactly the steps I took and the messages I got, I told you all about it. For your reference, for developing the documentation, I am a fairly sophisticated computer/web/GB/IA/WS/WP/WC/etc. user, but these were tasks I had never before attempted, and I am not a programmer. I understand such things in a very general way, but the details and routines change too rapidly for me to keep up. So while this might be "easy" to someone who frequently uploads books, or who writes scripts, it was not obvious to me what was supposed to happen.
Thank you again for creating the tool and I hope to be able to use it more in the future. Laura1822 (talk) 19:43, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely, the tool should be able to help non-programmers to add texts to IA and we're committed to provide the best experience for the user. With better documentation + UI tweaks, I hope to create a better experience for the users. :) Wassan.anmol (talk) 18:56, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
