Please answer to the multiple pings on Commons, it's extremely unfriendly to just drop off such a post and survey and don't bother to answer questions about it. Grüße vom Sänger ♫(Reden) Hold the election 16:34, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IP editing research on jawiki[edit]

Hi.

  1. I found you left the message to request to answer googleform on ja:Wikipedia:井戸端. But it is the place to discuss, not for notification. I moved your message to suited page ja:Wikipedia:お知らせ (cf. Distribution list/Global message delivery). Please modify your list to post notifications for the future.
  2. How long does the googleform continue? Making limit to answer clear is efficient to get good answers.

@aokomoriuta, thank you for clarifying this--I apologize for posting this notification in the incorrect place. I'll do my best to follow your advice for using ja:Wikipedia:お知らせ (cf. Distribution list/Global message delivery) in the future. Thank you.

Regarding question #2, this survey will be open for 2 weeks. I'll make a change to the original announcement to reflect this. Thanks for bringing this up.

And for #3, thank you for taking the initiative with Sitenotice! I admit I should have thought of that and made an announcement there, as well. Please let me know if I can provide any more information, and thank you again for your valuable support! --MRaish (WMF) (talk) 15:03, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@aokomoriuta, thank you for your help with the site notice! I notice that we have a large number of responses already—more Japanese editors have expressed interest in this study than we can possibly interview, unfortunately. I would be happy to remove the site notice at this point (my 2 week estimate was much too high). I will be happy to post this statement at the location you linked above, although I am unfortunately limited to English. What do you think?

We can remove the sitenotice whenever you want because the googleform is yours and we just volunteer to respond. I want to make your request clear: "You're enough and the googleform is closing, so you hope to remove the sitenotice before closing", right? I can translate your message by pointing to this talk page. I will remove the sitenotice as soon as possible after I confirmed your response. I also can help you if you have something other than the sitenotice.
BTW, I have a question about this. Can you tell us how the result of the googleform and the interview will be used? We, Japanese Wikipedia community members, are also interested in the reasons why there are many IP edits and the result must help us to improve our site. For example, do you plan to (or are you able to) publish the statistical result? If you have such a plan, I want to tell other members with thanks to responces. --aokomoriuta (talk) 15:49, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @青子守歌 for your quick responses. First, yes, out of respect for the Japanese community, I think we should remove the site notice. I will be closing the Google Form today because we have already received so many responses from editors. As I am writing this, the survey has collected 746 responses! Thank you again for your unexpected and valuable help with this.
Second, in response to how the results will be used and published, I am happy to give you a summary. This research is currently being undertaken in Arabic, Spanish, Bengali, and Japanese Wikipedias (Arabic and Spanish data collection is finished, Bengali and Japanese are still underway). The sponsoring team (the Growth team) is interested in finding out (a) what are the main populations of IP editors in the Wikipedias they work with, and why are there differences between Wikipedias, and (b) which populations might be encouraged to edit while logged in, and which populations might instead be better accommodated as logged-out editors? The answers to these questions appear to be different in each Wikipedia.
We are writing a separate report for each language that is based on survey responses and anonymous interviews with community members. The Japanese report will be published once it's completed and the sponsoring team has had a change to digest it and request changes, which may take up to two months. The survey results will mainly be reported as percentages and distributions, such as showing what proportion of responding editors believe that their IP addresses should be private. At this point, I don't plan to do much statistical analysis since the numbers of respondents in the four study languages are quite different, but in the case of Japanese it will now (thanks to your help!) be possible to make a statistical comparison of the responses from patrollers vs. editors to the survey questions, for example. 1. I removed the sitenotice and posted your message (summarized/translated one) on the notice board ja:Wikipedia:お知らせ#日本語版ウィキペディアにおける匿名編集について詳しくお聞かせ下さい. Thank you for your quick reply.
  2. I'm looking forward to the report. I'm also happy if we (you, the Growth team, I, and jawiki community) could collaborate to study the result and help some improvements.
Please feel free to contact me for the next request or anything when it's needed. aokomoriuta (talk) 17:09, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@青子守歌 Thank you! I welcome your offer for collaboration, and I'm looking forward to being able to share the results with the jawiki community. I understand that several teams at the Foundation are interested in working more with the Japanese Wikipedia community, so I expect that there may be more outreach in the coming months, as well. But I will definitely try to coordinate more effectively with the jawiki community when engaging in outreach like this in the future. Thank you! Translated version?[edit]

Hi, @MRaish (WMF): Thank you for sharing the report documents on WMF IP editors research report! I'm reading and investigating the reports to share them with all jawiki community members.

Do you have any plan (or can we request you or WMF) to make the (professionally) translated version of the reports? Especially, it should be very helpful if many people can read File:IP Editors report (Japanese).pdf in Japanese. Do you (or the authors) have the Japanese version? The authors seem native Japanese speakers. @YShibata (WMF): might know about professional translators on WMF.

In case of if you and WMF can't prepare the translated versions, I'm happy if you post the on-wiki and translatable version (i.e. wikitext format in the meta with the translate extension), at least.--aokomoriuta (talk) 00:37, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @MRaish (WMF), I'm grateful for your effort in this research. It would be great if you let it in our mother tongue. As Maryana said during the APP calls, the budget for translation would be (has been) increased. MSG team has just made a contract with Gengo for this type of case. As you know, some teams had contracted with Transperfect. MSG team sent Gengo a glossary of the Wikis-specific terms. YShibata (WMF) (talk) 04:25, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@青子守歌 and @YShibata (WMF), thank you for suggesting this, and apologies for the oversight of only posting an English version. I will get to work on securing a Japanese translation ASAP, and I'll follow up here with one when it's ready. I hope to have a version uploaded to Commons and sharable here by early next week. Thanks to both for your suggestions! MRaish (WMF) (talk) 14:30, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @MRaish (WMF), you're kindly letting the Japanese language users share the accumulated knowledge. YShibata (WMF) (talk) 07:43, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@YShibata (WMF) @青子守歌 I've uploaded the Japanese translation to Commons, which should be viewable here. The translation was prepared by Gengo (as noted by @YShibata (WMF) above). I'm unfortunately not in a position to verify the quality of this translation, although any feedback in that regard would be appreciated. Again, my thanks to both of you and the jawiki community for your ongoing collaboration! MRaish (WMF) (talk) 19:46, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MRaish (WMF): Thank you! I read the translated "IP Editors report (Japanese).pdf" and I think its quality is enough to understand in Japanese. I'm sharing it for jawiki community! How about File:IP editors synthesis deck (ar es ja bn).pdf? It also should help us as same as "IP Editors report". aokomoriuta (talk) 03:14, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@青子守歌 I apologize for taking so long to respond to you. Translating the slide deck of the 4-language summary is an excellent idea. I'll order a translation and provide a link here when the translation is ready. Thanks again, and please accept my apologies for the delayed response. Thank you! MRaish (WMF) (talk) 15:30, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @青子守歌, with apologies for the delay, I'm happy to share the translated version of the slide deck, which can be found here. As before, I'm not able to review the quality of this translation. I hope it is intelligible and up to the Japanese community's standards. Thank you! MRaish (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for sharing! I can read it and understand by Japanese. The translation is not so bad and wrong from the original version. I will share it to jawiki community. aokomoriuta (talk) 10:35, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How kind of you @MRaish (WMF)! On the 8th, last Sunday, at Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network, an agenda was about IP blocking and Open Proxies discussion. I shared your report with WMF participants. Some of them would contact you. Thank you! And @青子守歌, participants from many areas wanted the background on my comment on it, but I couldn't tell enough. I hoped you were there. YShibata (WMF) (talk) 07:58, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@YShibata (WMF)Thanks for sharing! Let me know if there's anything I can help with or support I can provide. MRaish (WMF) (talk) 15:31, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
