2024 Staff & Leaders Retreat

WUGN staff and leaders retreat is a retreat to mark the beginning of a new fiscal year and provides the staff and leaders the opportunity to align goals, brainstorm new initiatives, and foster teamwork.

  • There was also a brief deliberation on the design of the award plaque for the WUGN distinguished contributors awards, where a consensus was reached on a design that’s more peculiar to WUGN.

Session 1: Social Media Report (10:16 AM - 10:52 AM)[edit]

  • Adenike Bakare, WUGN’s social media manager, presented the social media report, covering:
  1. Executive summary which stated that the WUGN social media strategy aims to promote Wikimedia projects, increase community engagement, and develop our advocacy initiatives.
  2. Social media marketing objectives, which are disseminating free knowledge to Nigerians and beyond, interactive community engagement, and strategic digital penetration for engagement in our Wikimedia campaigns.
  3. Overall social media analysis. She stated that for the 23/24 fiscal year, we had a total of 6,863 followers, 34,503 reach, 123,190 impressions, and a 25.5% engagement rate.
  4. Facebook analytics. She stated that over 300 posts were published on Facebook, and she recorded a 73.9% increase in followers.
  5. Instagram analytics. She stated that there was a 42.2% increase in followers.
  6. Twitter analytics. She stated that there was a 16.8% increase in followers, 16.8% increase in impressions, and that over 400 posts were published.
  7. Report conclusion: She stated that by prioritising these metrics, we can better understand the effectiveness of our promotional efforts for our various campaigns and initiative advocacies to drive meaningful growth for Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, which will translate into growth for the Wikimedia Foundation.

    Suggestion 1: Getting the leaders of our communities to start engaging our content (Mr. Adetola)
    Suggestion 2: Communities should tag us to their social media posts (Mr. Olusola)
  3. Suggestion: We should get the statistics from the previous year to effectively measure our growth. (Barakat)
  4. Question 3: How can we improve our social media presence?
    Suggestion: Do an analysis report with 2 or 3 social media handles of other vibrant affiliates in Africa by comparing what they do to what we do so as to help improve our presence. (Mr. Olusola)

    Answer: My Beautiful Africa (Adenike)
  6. Suggestion: We should engage content creators for My Beautiful Africa. (Adenike)
    Suggestion: Adenike should get volunteers to work with. (Mr. Olusola)
  7. Suggestion: We should consider sharing our contents with the leader’s group to encourage them to engage with them and share them with their communities for more engagement. (Mr. Medi)
    Suggestion: Share links to the content, not the content itself. (Mr. Ayokanmi)
    Suggestion: Contents should be shared with the management team, the whole Wiki Nigeria team, and the community leaders group. (Mr. Ayokanmi)


  • Task: Adenike to check the social media accounts of communities to know who doesn't have a social media page and share with the leaders tomorrow. (Mr. Ayokanmi)

Session 2: Grants Report (11:19 AM - 12:58 PM)[edit]

  • Ashioma Medi, WUGN’s grant officer, presented the grant report for the 23/24 fiscal year, covering:
  1. Facts and figures: he stated that 22.4 million NGN was paid out, 49 grants awarded to our networks & fan clubs; 65 awarded to individuals, 114 grants awarded from 257 applications (44% approval), 22.81% of grants awarded for awareness creation projects, 4279 uploads on Wikimedia Commons, 4279 items created on Wikidata, 163 new editors introduced to Wikimedia projects, and 33.33% of grants awarded to women
  2. Grant-making process
  3. Distribution by states: A total of two hundred and fifty seven (257) proposals were submitted for funding from the community. These projects cut across thirty four (34) states (including the FCT) and all six (6) geo-political zones in Nigeria. The proposals were from both individuals and networks /fan clubs. There were no applications from Cross River, Kebbi, and Taraba states, and only 27 states were accepted for funding.
  4. Distribution by geopolitical zone: 21.1% of funded projects went to the south west, 13.2% to the north central, 7.9% to the south south, 16.7% to the north east, 17.5% to the south east, and 23.7% to the north west.
  5. Gender distribution: 66.7% of the funded projects went to males and 33.3% went to females, based on the quality of the proposals submitted.
  6. Event class: 26 awareness projects were funded, 21 campaigns, 24 capacity building / edit-a-thons, 9 content gap/advocacy, 12 contests, 9 content gap, 11 meet-ups, and 2 translation projects.
  7. Wikimedia projects in focus: 1 funded project for Bole Wikipedia, 42 for English Wikipedia, 3 for Fulfulde Wikipedia, 27 for Hausa Wikipedia, 9 for Igbo Wikipedia, 0 for Yoruba Wikipedia, 29 for Wikimedia Commons, 2 for Wikibooks, 19 for Wikidata, 1 for English Wikiqoute, 2 for Igbo Wikiqoute, 1 for Hausa Wikitionary, and 1 for Wikivoyage.
  8. Financial analysis: In the fiscal year 2023/24, a total of 22,453,850 NGN was allocated for both microgrants and campaign events, marking a significant increase from the 7,084,150 NGN disbursed in the previous fiscal year of 2022/23. Of this total, individual projects received funding amounting to 12,026,500 NGN. Additionally, 14 networks and fan clubs collectively shared 10,427,350 NGN for their respective projects. Within the allocated funds, 15,787,200 NGN was designated for microgrant initiatives, while 6,666,650 NGN was disbursed specifically for campaign activities.
  9. Future projections: The Women's Unity Growth Network (WUGN) is expanding its reach to more states across Nigeria. Currently, WUGN operates in 11 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), through its networks and fan clubs. Each of these hubs requires a minimum of 1 million naira annually to function effectively, although presently, they operate with an average of 868,945.83 NGN. Out of the 14 registered hubs in Nigeria, 12 were active during the past year, collectively spending over 10 million Nigerian naira on 49 projects. For the upcoming fiscal year, WUGN aims to establish a presence in 15 states across the country. This expansion will necessitate increased funding for the year.

  4. Moving forward, a specific disbursement date will be set, and individuals must respond to comments and provide necessary details by that date to receive the disbursement. It was agreed upon during deliberations to establish a timeline for this process.


  • Conclusion:
  1. Payment will be processed between the 6th and 7th of each month.
  2. Individuals who fail to submit their details by the 5th of the month will forfeit the grant.

Session 3: Learning and Evaluation Report 23/24 fiscal year (2:12 PM - 2:57 PM)[edit]

  • Aborishade Adetola, the L&E officer, led a discussion on:
  1. Geographical distribution
  2. Team Performance
  3. Survey and Response rate

  2. Poor feedback from Kaduna grantees (individual evaluation and survey)
  3. Endangered languages in Taraba (Nigeria Indigenous Language Symposium and impact)

  1. For this new fiscal year, what are the plans put in place to ensure that L&E can effectively learn and evaluate the overall performance?

  • Suggestions
  1. Ayokanmi suggests including recommendations in surveys to help make them more effective.
  2. Medi suggests mentioning the names of the languages going extinct so the program team can work on them.
  3. Medi suggests knowing the needs of WUGN in terms of outcomes from projects. He also suggests that WUGN write to every team at the beginning of every fiscal year to inform them of what is expected of them.

Session 4: Plans for the Future (3:31 PM - 4:00 PM)[edit]
