The Wiki Loves Women initiative hosted the SheSaid drive for the 3rd consecutive year. The 3rd edition resulted in +4158 articles created or imported and +1918 articles improved in 11 languages.

The WLW launched it Inspiring Open podcast which resulted in, after 4 phases, 16 final guests featured + podcasts created and released every 2 weeks across 2022. The odcast is available for subscribers or to listen across 16 channels (including Wikimedia’s project space, Meta) and growing.

The ISA Tell Use Anout Her : Women in Architecture - March

The theme for the Wiki Loves Women's March drive this year was Women on the Frontline Climate aimed at adding relevant Wiki-data linked information to the images depicting women activists in climate. The campaign saw 2076 images being described by 28, who posted 43,835 descriptions.

The WLW Focus Group - January - December

The Focus Group members had 12 monthly thematic working sessions, bi-monthly office hours on Thursdays, and have hosted about 8 informal office hours.

What was planned early 2021[edit]

For 2021 we had a project plan jam-packed with exciting new elements that build on Wiki Loves Women’s success so far. You can read the full strategy behind our gender-equity engagements over 2021 here.
We decided to focus on the following:
  • Coached training of communities
  • Train-the-trainer MOOC: a skills transfer programme to sustainably build a gender-equity programme with in the Wikimedia communities
  • #InspiringWomen podcasts: interviewing and celebrating local notable women and WM organisers.
  • Monthly online focus group meetings. These are designed to be an informal discussion space that promotes knowledge transfer, two-way engagement and will be fully participatory.
  • The topics of each discussion to be decided by the small group, prior to the meeting, but could range from gender-equity in the open movement, to leadership skills, partnership development, etc.
Disclaimer:
Wiki Loves Women’s MOOC and Coaching courses are aimed at providing training towards access for women and gender-sensitised men. The main goal of the project is skills transfer and also to raise awareness of and action to counter the lack of representation of women generally, and more specifically on online platforms such as Wikipedia.
There are many important and contentious issues within the Gender space, however this programme is not aimed at unpacking those. Rather it is aimed at transferring vital skills towards women and men – digital, technical, researching, writing and leadership – that allow them to access information in order to make up their own minds within their cultural specificity. May/June 2021[edit]

The Focus Group Members initiative kickstarted in May 2021. Wiki Loves Women Focus Coaching programme is a practical, action-oriented, mentored online training programme that provides skills and knowledge transfer that is specifically designed to support community leaders as they create gender-equity programmes and drives within the Wikimedia and Open movements. The Focus Coaching programme will provide ideas, guidance, skills transfer and mentorship as each Focus Group Member plans a gender-equity programme within their community, and gathers the resources and skills to implement this programme.

2. WikiGap and Wikimedia Foundation Nigeria Inc's International Women's Day Conference

IWD Conference by the Wikimedia Foundations Nigeria Inc in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden. Held on Monday, 8th of March, Wiki In Africa's Isla Haddow-Flood presented Mind the Gender Gap on Wikipedia about the impact of the Gender-Gap across the Wikimedia movement and what the movement is doing about it.
A Wiki Loves Women prize has been offered to winners of the writing drive being held across Nigeria.

WLW Activities in 2020[edit]

SheSaid : October-December 2020[edit]

The Wiki Loves Women initiative was celebrating women leaders throughout late 2020 with the SheSaid drive. The drive was aimed at improving the visibility of women in improving Wikiquote entries related to them.
Launched at the CC Summit 2020 on the 20th October 2020, the #SheSaid campaign had been an amazing success! Across 7 languages, it has resulted in 867 new or improved articles (the majority new). Italian Wikiquote was the clear language winner (at 405 articles) with Ukraine (187 articles) and French (106) coming not so close behind. This is an amazing result - thank you for getting women’s voices heard. The final results can be seen here.
Although we have released the results as they were on the 5th January. The Wiki Loves Women team have decided to keep this as an ongoing campaign.

WikiGap Nigeria Online Challenge in May 2020[edit]

In May 2020, the Wiki Loves Women team supported the WikiGap Nigeria Online Challenge spearheaded by Wikimedia Nigeria UserGroup.
This was a Nigeria public writing competition to create and improve articles that will strengthen Wikipedia coverage of Nigerian women. The Challenge was organized as part of the global WikiGap campaign by Wikimedia Nigeria in collaboration with African Women in the Media ( AWIM) and the Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria, Wiki Loves Women from Wik in Africa, and Women in Red. It was a build-up to the WikiGap event held in Lagos and Abuja to celebrate International Women's Day which produced 17 Wikipedia biographies on Nigerian women. Due to the prevailing global pandemic and lockdown in Nigeria, it was organized with a 3hr online training via Webinar on Wikipedia for interested Nigerians to be followed by a two-week online contest.
The WLW team acted as advisors, presented during the training webinar and participated to the gifts to the winners of the challenge.

Celebrating Women's Month : the TellUsAboutHer in March 2020[edit]

The Wiki Loves Women initiative is celebrating Africa’s women leaders throughout March 2020 with the Tell Us About Her drive on the ISA tool. The drive was aimed at improving the visibility of political leaders and activists across Africa on Wikimedia projects. If you do not know it yet, the ISA tool is a fun and mobile friendly tool that helps you to add better descriptions onto the photographs uploaded to Wikimedia Commons within selected categories, so that they are more useful on Wikipedia and Wikidata. Information added to the image description is structured data (depicts or captions). Categories I chose for this campaign are related to politicians, activists and in particular feminists from Africa.

Global online activities[edit]

  • Women Occupation Drive was a Wiki Loves Women drive on Wikipedia on WikiData in support of Months of African Cinema (from WikiProject AfroCine). The aim of the Occupations Drive was to help improve the occupation labels in WikiData with non gender-biased description and description in more languages. Pages were established for 12 Africa-based languages. It took place in 2018.

  • Women in Sport was a Wiki Loves Women drive on Wikipedia to improve the coverage of Africa's sportswomen on Wikimedia projects that took place throughout June 2019. it run across several language Wikipedias (English, French and Swahili), WikiData and Wikimedia Commons. Through the drive people were encouraged to update all the information available on WikiData on Africa’s Sportswomen. Participants were encouraged to upload images, translate existing articles, add WikiData items or create new articles on their favourite female sportswomen. The existing list of sports women that are covered on Wikimedia projects was listed (by country) displaying a variety of information in order to show what was missing.

2016-2017[edit]

From January 2016-April 2017, the Wiki Loves Women conducted a proof of concept project in four countries (Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria) in Africa, with accompanying interventions online, under the support of the Goethe-Institut.

The information below provides brief details on the results of the project.

Project Goals[edit]

  1. Increased content by providing significant increase in the role women played and are playing in the political, social and cultural sectors in Africa by increasing the number of articles on Wikipedia;
  2. Focused participation: through the concentration on a) Women and b) Providing verified information and aggregating African content onto the world’s largest encyclopedia;
  3. Cross continental and regional skills transfer, collaboration and networking
  4. Increased visibility and understanding of the Wikimedia projects: through the project activations, events and work with the partners will have significantly raised the level of interest in, and usage of, the Wikimedia projects in the focus countries;
  5. Provided training, support and encouragement that has built the volunteer base of contributing to Wikimedia and other open movement projects; and
  6. Strengthened Wikipedia as a source of information and access point for Africa-related content.

This is done by:

  1. Skills transfer and collaboration: the project will benefit by drawing on the resources and experience of members of Wikimedia Deutschland to assist with the initial training, mentoring and mid-action workshops;
  2. Focusing on information literacy through skills transfer to activated Wikipedia editors as defined by the American Library Association http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/informationliteracycompetency);
  3. Collaborative work with a broad array of institutional content partners (archives, museums, libraries, NGOs) as well as with communities and individuals;
  4. Encouraging sustainable donation by implementing a long-term strategy for information, data and media from focus-related suitable organisations (content partners);
  5. Profiling Goethe Institut libraries as being proactive in digital information literacy, and as providing meeting places for Wikipedia groups;
  6. Community development and encouraging active and sustained participation: providing support and activities to activate, galvanise, and increase the editors within the focus countries by involving content partners, network partners and working with existing editor groups; and
  7. Facilitating the process: Training, supporting and mentoring between six to twelve skilled Wikipedians in Residence (a minimum of one for each country) as facilitators to achieve the above goals.

Goal of the project: Encouraging the contribution of quality information on African women to be published on, and made widely available via, Wikipedia

How it is done: Gender inequality is rife across Africa. The Wiki Loves Women project focuses on bridging two significant gaps on Wikimedia projects – women and Africa – both in terms of content about these subjects and in terms of participation by people from these groups. In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, the project works to encourage the contribution of existing information from Civil Society Organisations and Gender-equality groups to Wikipedia. The donated content will specifically focus on women’s contribution to the political, economic, scientific, cultural and heritage landscape, as well as the current socio-political status of women, in each country. In addition, the project will encourage the activation and support of new and existing editors (both female and gender-sensitised male Wikipedians) in the focus countries.

Tangible impacts on the Volunteer groups[edit]

In Cameroon:

  • Women are currently the most committed to the Wikimedia project and the edit-a-thons
  • The creation and launch of the User Group: Wikimedians of Cameroon User Group
  • Partnership with Cameroon photographers

In Cote d'Ivoire: Thanks to the project, several women from our user group renewed their involvement in the movement so that we finally decided to create a dedicated women's group that will continue to work on the Wiki Loves Women project but under a new name: Wikimousso. Mousso means woman in a local Ivorian language. We already have a workshop planned in next August on "How to contribute on Wikidata".

In Ghana: WLW created the platform that has enabled us train more female editors in Ghana than any single project. Again through Wiki Loves Women we have been able to train and mentor some female project leads who have help us execute some projects successfully and an example is Wiki Indaba. Finally WLW has help us secure a lot of partnerships than any other project or intervention.

In Nigeria: We are currently working on SHE CAN WITH ICT, a project funded by WMF. The project was secured as result of our involvement in Wiki Loves Women.   We were able to secure Two Media partnership due to our involvement in Wiki Loves Women: 

  • The first is partnership with the online Blackface Radio station,
  • The second is a new partnership with free-to-air (terrestial) radio station, called WFM 91.7

On-wiki events organised during the WLW project[edit]

The proof of concept phase for Wiki Loves Women was not just confined geographically to the four countries. There were three on-Wiki drives that involved Wikipedians around the world in the project and getting more articles onto Wikipedias of all different languages.

Wiki Loves Women Launch Writing Contest[edit]

As a launching event and to celebrate the 15 years of Wikipedia, a writing contest was organised starting 15th of January 2016, to end 30th of January. The goal was to write biographies about notable African women.

  • 15 Anglophone teams (27 participants)
  • 18 Francophone teams (24 participants)
  • And 1 team (4 participants) from Armenian (completely unexpected ... but so very welcome!)

The Africa Destubathon[edit]

The idea behind the destubathon is fairly simple: blast away as many of our 37,000 + Africa stubs as possible! Though the Destubathon was primarily intended as a general stub elimination contest to cover all topics (related to Africa), this was run in a way to complement Wiki Loves Women project. The destubathon happened between October 15 till November 28, 2016.

There was a section of the African Destubathon that was focused entirely on articles relating to women. The results of this section included:

The #16WikiWomen Translate Drive[edit]

The drive was for 16 days to make available biographies on 16 notable African women, in at least 16 languages. The articles to be translated were the biographies of African women with the extra drive to translate each article into at least 16 languages.

Results

  • 116 articles were created based on translation from the English version. Out of these, 64 were a near equivalent of the master article in terms of quality.
  • 39 previously existing article versions were improved.
  • The overall number of languages involved were 44.
  • 54 people reported participating.
